So I waited until 5am this morning to download CC and play it all day! So here comes the anticipated review, the first from the forums. I'm reformating my reviews to get right into the deep stuff, thanks be to the feedback!
So here's the rundown.
Gameplay - As soon as I started the combat I immediatly fell in love with it. The simple combo system is actually really complex. Any atack can be linked with another which is sweet! There are 20 characters in the game 16 of which are unlocked. You start off with the four knights. Green a knight which has a poison effect on his spells. Ice, a knight that spells do decent damage but also freeze. Red, a knight with lighting attacks with decent damage and stun. And Orange, a knight with fire attacks with a damage over time effect like the Green Knight's. You will come to enjoy the Mario World esque level selection. But you will pulled even further into the game by the level system. Level up and boost your characters level and stats! the campaign is a good 5-6 hours if you dig into everything. But the fun gets even better with online co-op. But you can also take your characters into online player vs player games. There is a game I enjoyed that involves gathering more treasure than the other players. But I will never stop playing this game for the Arena. A deathmatch style battle royale between 2-4 players. May the best knight win. I would have to say the only thing holding the gameplay back is the difficulty. Sometimes you get the feeling this won't happen without other people playing with you.
Graphics - Handrawn beauty by Mr. Paladin. This game is just as much of a work of art, if only slightly less than Braid. You get the feeling you really are playing in a demented story book. I really love this art style. I loved it from the moment I played Alien Hominid. There will be those people who will say this is ripped off from "so and so" of course. But this style is Mr. Paladins specialty. The characters look very nice and the Knights look bad ***.
Sound - Excellent soundtrack created by Newgrounds users. The opening song has been stuck in my head all day long. Very well done. I think this is one of the best soundtracks of any game.
Replayability - More than any other game on XBLA in my opinion. you'll be playing Arena for months to come.
Final Word - Great game. But not without a few flaws. Very difficult at times and will turn many players away. The online play is very screwy right now but it should be fixed soon so I didn't base the rating on that unintended flaw. Also, a few more gameplay modes would have been awesome.
9.2/10
