should I play?Follow

#1 Oct 12 2008 at 7:07 PM Rating: Decent
hey guys.
I'm a wow veteran. I just quit and I'm proud to say, after two years, it's over. So I like to play mmo's. I need a new one besides wow. I'm lookin at LOTRO. I just wanted a couple of answers before I spend 50$ to play. Wats it like?I enjoy pve content but also a bit of pvp at times. I just want a game where I can play for like an hour a day and he good at it. Not like wow where u have to spend 5 days ingame just to get pve geared and spend another 5 for pvp. I was a BT MH and SSC MT, so I know the ropes
On pve. But I heard the pve and storyline are prominent in this game and pvp is very pick-up-and-go. But I am still wondering. In endgame pve is the content still there? Can u do a instance run for gear? Are the battle mechanics good? Is the class balance good? I know these are all opinion answers but that's exactly what I'm looking for. Wat is your opinion as a LOTRO veteran and a fellow mmo gamer. And it will be even better if u were a wow vet as well.
Peace

Orlykin, I was in the same situation in regards to WOW. I tried to play AoC but since AoC and WAR have a "founding" basis of PvP they didn't work out for me. a friend reminded me of Lotro a few weeks ago and it have been having a good time since i started. I enjoy the current balance of solo and group (fellowship) questing. Since i believe that the emphasis in Lotro is story aand exploring it lends itself to PvE very well. I havn't tried the PvMP (player vs Monster player) aspect since i am not into that side of gaming. I plan on staying for while since i have already pre-ordered for the expantion. The population is very helpful and not as childish as most other mmorpgs that i have seen. I have only been called a noob once.

PvP gear will take you more than five days, but PvP is definitely not the main focus of the game, more of a side game. The PVE storyline is the main point of the game. It is Lord of the Rings after all. The classes are pretty well balanced for PvE, with each being able to provide something unique to a group, but also able to hold their own for soloing. Currently however, there are not alot of classes and fewer races. There are lots of instances for groups and small raids. Endgame is not huge yet, but the upcoming first expansion should bring more, as well as two new classes. Characters are probably less gear dependent than some other games with more reliance on traits and skill slot choices.

ok, well here is one final question.
I'm pretty confident that i will begin playing it in a day or so, but, I need a few loose ends tied up.
How is the population?
A big appeal for me that makes MMORPG's worth the time is the community, i know from RBEyer that "The population is very helpful and not as childish as most other mmorpgs that i have seen. I have only been called a noob once." And thats good. Coming from WoW low-age age appeal, and on top of that being mostly Alliance, i am sick to death of people with a 70 and they are 4 years old and feel like they own the world. So my question is 'How many people play?'. I've googled it and it doesnt show how many people play. I saw a semi-recent thred that stated that there are 2k people on average on each server. But i want to know from people who have played the game? Is it like WoW where you have to fight for kills to complete quests or is there just enough that you still have a social network and dont fight for kills.
-Is it hard to find instance groups?
Is it like wow where tanks always ***** at you for asking them to tank? Is it impossible to find healers? Are the classes unbalanced? Is it like WotLK where all the classes become one basically, like are the class lines amazingly blurred (i.e. Shammies with polymorph).
-Do each of the classes have a distinct play style?
Do tank classes have no melee damage making them impossible to level? Is the only way to level a healer by casting low-level DoT's and healing yourself through it? Or is it good where each of the classes gets certain abilities that make their playstyle valid and workable. Like can you level with a sword and a shield and still kill a mob in less than 10 minutes but not be like tanks in Warhammer that can take on 10 mobs at once and kill all of them with ease. Is the trait system like the specc system at all?

This might seem long but i just wanna know a little more that you cant find out from a wiki page or forum thread thats a year and a half old :P

and also,
how is endgame? and instances?
I know there are 6-man parties but what are they like? Is there any good loot drops from big baddies? are they purely story related? Just what is the whole experience like?
And raids,
are they bigger parties, or just harder mobs? are they huge raid bosses (balrog, etc.) that drop loot that makes you wanna drool? B/c i heard (from yet another out-of-date post, its all i can find :[, theyre all old!) that endgame isnt up and running yet but will be when MoM comes out. I wanna raid endgane, and that wont be happening if it isnt implemented.
What is endgame like? Is it straight 6-hour instances and/or gold farming so you can gimp out a level 19 toon and rape normal people with lives? or are their things to do. I mean like farm titles or armor or crafting or special in game mounts or any number of things. or do you just start a new toon and play through it again?

Without trying to be a smarty-pants, I would say to chuck $50 at the game, dive in and have a bash..

The game is what you make it. But Turbine have done an amazing job creating an immersive world to have adventures in, and luckily, the community that has populated the world is by far the best I have come across in any game I've ever played.

If you think it sucks, then you have lost $50. Not much in the scale of things really, but I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Good luck Smiley: smile
