Most of my fights are soundless, everything else is fine, and sometimes i get a grunt or two from my dwarf before the fight is done.
Any ideas how i can rectify this.

You could go into the Audio panel in 'options' and check that the combat sound sliders are set high enough....

Also check (Audio Menu in Options) the capture/playback device. Make sure the sounds are being sent to the right output device.
