SWG 14-day trial -- Downloading the gameFollow

#1 Dec 18 2008 at 10:51 AM Rating: Decent
Recently got minimal (256kbps) broadband and decided that I'd take a look at SWG.

So I download the 2.2 MB 14-day trial package Monday evening, set up a Station account, and start downloading the SWG 14-day trial. Estimated download time is 7 hours or thereabouts. For obscure logistical reasons, I can't leave the computer on and download overnight, and I do have to share the line with other people. Fortunately, Station can handle interrupted downlads; I figure I can finish this Tuesday evening or so.

Then the estimated download time jumps to 20+ hours. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?

It's now Thursday morning and I'm still downloading. Looking at the install directory, I've pulled down about 1.6 GB. Station says I've got another 14 or so hours left.

Just how large a download should I expect? Lucasarts store says The Complete Online Adventure digital download is 4.5 GB (plus 2.7 GB for the extras). Is this more or less what I should expect do have to pull down for the trial version?

(At this rate I'm tempted to just pick up physical copies of either the Starter Kit or COA; digital download being something less than ideal under the present circumstances.)

Pick up one of the Lucas Arts Combo packs(Multi-game packs) They all come with the free trial and you get some cool games.

Best I can tell you is that my Star Wars Galaxies folder is 5.6GB in size (Patches included) and I imagine you will need to download all of it.

Not so good a deal when you already have all the other games in the collection. :-/

e.g. "Best of PC" collection.

EaW: Got when it came out.
KotOR: Got within months of coming out; Still have on HD to play every now and then. (Yes, I'm intrigued by SW:TOR.)
Battlefront: Still on HD; parts of it I like better than BF2.
Republic Commando: Got it cheap this spring.

If it's a Lucasarts single-player PC SW game, I've probably owned it, and there's a good chance I still have the discs.

The Cammando disk should have the free trial on it. The have been including the trial on every LA game for awhile, and I also have them and have duplicated games to get others.

Not with the SW:RC jewel-box DVD-ROM.

Besides, if the download is a multi-gigabyte deal, there's no way the files could be tacked onto a one-or-two CD game. (Or even 4 or 5 discs like SW:EaW.)

Anyway, just had the second timer reset to 23 hours+. I guess the countdown timer can't handle values larger than a day. (2.9 GB d/l so far...)

(I hope it'll be done by Christmas...)

that does sound like a really minimal, minimal broadband.. i think the last time i had to install it took 4 hours to download and install, even if only have 256k should it take so long? it sounds like you might have a problem there :(

Running the numbers...

I'm maxing out at around 28 Kilobytes a second throughput (which is about right for 256 kilobit connection).

Assuming MontyB's 5.6 Gigiabyte figure is correct, that comes out to 200,000 seconds. That's a bit over 3,333 minutes, or around 55.5 hours.

Oddly enough, the initial 7 hours plus two 24-hour overflows works out to a 55-hour download.

In retrospect, I shoulda splurged for the 1.5 Mbit connection. Of course, by the time any request for a speed increase can be processed, I'll probably have finished the download. Barring technical/social difficulties, and if the 5.6 GB figure is a safe upper limit, the download should be done Sunday afternoon, so I can start poking around after dinner...

i dont know how it works exactly.. but when downloading it usually says between 600 and 700 kps or whatever it is.. im guessing your not in the UK, as broadband is only available in 2mb versions or higher.. as far as i know?
daytime download speeds are terrible here, as BT cuts our bandwidth down from 8mb to 1 or 2mb, but from midnight till about lunchtime or so, we get the full 8mb.. its probably too late now to affect your downloading of swg, but in the future im sure there will be other things you will want to download, if you can afford it i would opt for the higher rated broadband service... of course, these days affording something isnt as easy as it used to be :(

Well, that's over...

For the morbidly curious/terminally bored, the grand total download comes out to:

5.12 GB (5,509,017,736 bytes) (No adjustment for file compression during d/l.)

Includes hotfixes up to 44 and patches up to 43.

And it even runs. (At least as far as selecting a server.)

So in a few hours -- I do have a vague semblance of a life and have a few things to do out here in the Big Room -- I'll see if all the stuff I've been reading on the various websites and boards over the past week makes any sense. ;-)

Thanks for all your responses and insights.
