Wow. Maybe I'm biased, being a hardcore WoW player, but this post seems backwards on a SWG forum. heh. I'll admit right-out, I'm brand-spanking-new to Galaxies. I was watching Episodes 2 and 3 on Spike TV the other day and got to thinking 'y'know, I never did try that Star Wars game' so I got on, downloaded the free trial, and gave it a whirl. I thought it was a blast. I leveled to 10, did all the quests, made myself a cool 100k creds and then figured the game was fun enough to warrant a purchase.
Now I kinda feel betrayed, and wish I hadn't been so hasty. Maybe I should've actually left the newbie zone before buying, but I didn't expect the actual game itself, with all the meat'n'potatos of the Star Wars lore to feed on, would be so bland and, well, directionless. In wow, you know where you're going. One zone prepares you for the next and moves you always-forward, branching you off into new zones, new kinds of quests, and keeping you well-geared. Again, I'm probably biased, but that's what I think of when I picture Warcraft.
Galaxies, on the other hand, seems to have dumped me in the middle of a desert with a few generic 'Go suck up to Jabba' quests that got old pretty quick, going back and forth in my speeder with such horrible and misplaced lag that I have to press forward in bursts so I don't overshoot or stop moving in the middle of a Jawa gathering and die. The quests themselves wouldn't be so bad, even the terminal 'dailies', if they weren't so blasted one-sided. x_x Where the hell is all the new gear? I'm still wearing generic newbie-zone drops, and can't use the weapon I just got off a lvl 10 quest til lvl 14. Am I able to craft my own weapons and armor? Who knows...game doesn't mention it. And auto-attacking? God, I'm glad I read this thread! I had no idea pressing 'Y' would auto-attack. Factions? Well I joined the Empire...don't know what that does, or what perks / drawbacks it has, but we'll find out.
Basically, what I'm getting at is that this game doesn't really teach you anything about itself. It just assumes you know, drops you in the thick of it then dusts it's hands of you entirely. It seems more attuned to a beta than something I have ( and did ) pay for, but I get that it's had it's problems for awhile now. Anywho, the way I see it, I'm down 20 bucks and have a month to find a way to enjoy this game. I'm gonna read the hell out of every guide I can find, try to figure out how to craft gear and whatnot. I went Jedi out of the box, hey who wouldn't?, but I'm thinking down the line of switching to a smuggler. Might provide a bit more entertainment.
