Even without allowing gambits to do everything fro you the combat is overly simple. Buff up before, attack monster, heal as needed, repeat. Offensive magic is useless outside of when the game forces you to fight a monster that can only be harmed magically. Debuffs of any sort are useless. Skills are useless.
The first time I played through I thought the same thing, but if you do it right it makes a world of difference. Applying weakness gambits and using the right staffs and armor/accessories and magic and skills become very useful.
The second time I played through I more or less manaburned the whole game.
