Chrono Trigger DS, the failure.Follow

I have only two complaints. They renamed Crono to Chrono, which isn't THAT bad.

BUT FROG GOT RENAMED TO GREN! EWWWW EWWWW EWWWW

You can get all characters renamed near the end of the first game. The NPC is a blue goobbue looking monster in the burned remains of the prehistoric village after Lavos lands in 65 Million BC.

Ummm... in my DS game, Crono is still named Crono, by default, and I can't even type in Chrono because it still has the 5 character limit. What are you smoking?

And Frog is not called Gren in it...

What are you talking about?

Edit:
I checked the script again for the DS game (Fiendlord and all). His name is Glenn in the DS version. I don't know what version you are playing.

Considering he said Gren and not Glen I think it's a JP Rom with an engrish patch.

P.S. - Glen is Frog's real name if you never played before.

The JP version of Chrono Trigger DS doesn't need an English patch, it comes with English and Japanese offically. I have the JP version in my DS right now.

Edit:
How ever this ends, it will be Ikkian that has failed.

I'm playing a real DS version on my DS. Maybe it's the French translation though. And yes, Crono is named Chrono and Frog is named Gren.

I call shenanigans, I tried just now to name my character Chrono and it wouldn't go past Chron. If I typed 'O' at the end it would just change the 'N' to an 'O' and make it Chroo.

How did you take those pictures? Or did you just happen to find appropriate ones on the interwebs?

It should be Crono. I thought he's called Crono without the h because the game only limits character names to five letters, but that doesn't seem to be the case. In my SNES Chrono Trigger manual as well as on the box, it says Crono. Chrono Trigger as titled is named after an item that is in the game. Why would the creator of that item named it after someone he haven't met if his name is Chrono?

Anyway, I don't see what was wrong with the Frog name. His real name is revealed later in the game anyway and it gives players some curiosity about the character until then.

Ah, I thought it might be an emulator... but was confused when you said "In my DS game..." in your first post... now I realize that didn't mean an actual DS Smiley: tongue.

Oh, I do have the DS game. Just because I use an emulator doesn't mean I don't own actual games :)

I just opened it up on the emulator so I could Screenshot it. I originally tried it on my DS, found out it wouldn't let me go over 5 characters in the name, so I wanted a screenshot.

I've actually run into stuff like this before; such as Digimon World DS games. The digimon have full names when they are NPCs and random battle mobs but when you try to rename one you created you get screwed over on the letter allotment. What sucks even more is that you can't keep the default name, the game forces you to rename it to a bastardized version, like the Chrono to Crono problem.

It's not the problem. Crono has been the real name since SNES :)

Of course it's rumored that it was Crono in SNES just because the 5 character limit... but that's the original name and it's been that since the start.

Everyone who "swears" they had their character named in 6 letters please show some courtesy to at least check again. TirithRR is right, and he done his homework. Get yours done.

I can say 100% positve you can name them 6 letters in the DS version, as im looking at it right now.

id take a picture but all i have is a camera phone and it doesn't seem to want to take anything but a blurry pic of the screen.

the Snes version was limited to 5, but my copy of the DS version sure isnt.

I'm using the Japanese release of the game (cartridge in the DS).

Ok, just down went and purchased the North American release from Wal-Mart.

Screenshot

Seems one of the only differences between the Japanese and North American release is the Japanese kept the old 5 character limit, while the North American increased it to 6.

The name still defaults to Crono in both releases though.

Smiley: motz

Edit:
In all my screenshots I purposefully timed it to show the underlining cursor. When there is an extra space the cursor is in the blank space, not under the letter. The Japanese screenshots are real and show a 5 character limit.
