Problem solved, then. I apologize for doubting the other side.

Seems one of the only differences between the Japanese and North American release is the Japanese kept the old 5 character limit, while the North American increased it to 6.

The name still defaults to Crono in both releases though.

Smiley: motz

What a weird thing to change, i figured the US release would just be the japanese release switched over to the English it has.

We've gone through the JP and NA release. And the EU Release apparently isn't until Feb. 6, 2009 so it's not even available yet.

Once my DS is recharged, I'll attempt a picture to prove it, you'll see. It defaults it to Chrono. Like I also said, if you had read, perhaps it's the French translation that does it.

Hmmm.

The JP version will let me Select JP or ENG.
The NA version doesn't have an option to let me select the Language. (I cannot find anything on google about it having more than just English, either).

I can't test it myself.

I couldn't select the language either. However, when I configured my DS, I put it in French, so games automatically start in French now even though I'd like English better.

have you tried going into your ds settings and changing it to english? or do you just not know how?

from the screen with the pictochat option after it give you the health warning, go down the the bottom symbol that looks like a ds, then the wrench, then the globe, if you didnt know.

if that didnt work then its kinda messed that you cant change the default language after you first set it up.

Oh, I AM French, so I set my DS to French by habit. However, I wish I could also choose the game language myself.

Seems to be a common thing with NA released DS Games. They remove the language option from the in game settings and just go by firmware settings instead.

Kind of stupid, since the JP and EU releases usually keep the option in the game settings.

I hate how they assume Americans are too dumb to want other languages so they go out of the way to remove the option from the game menu, when it already existed in the original.

Maybe it's the French translation though.

That makes sense, since "frog" en français is "grenouille". But you knew that. ^.^

So they named him Gren as a shorthand word for Frog, and not a bastardize Japanese translation from Glenn?

Now I'm confused.

Is that a failure or no?

I dunno.

It'd be odd if it's true. Cause later in the game he'll say "My name is not Gren, it's Glenn!"

I will always call Atma Weapon Atma Weapon... never Ultima Weapon.

Square likes to fix things to be the way they wished they could have had them originally once they have the means to do so. (Look at any of the newer remakes of the SNES FF games.) Letter limitations for character and items names in SNES games caused a lot of things to look other than how they were intended, so they are just fixing them. In the end, it's a matter of preference by the end user that determines whether the fixes are accepted, but since you can choose the name for your characters and change it later on if you wish, it really doesn't matter.

Short version:
I'll choose which mistranslations I want to keep and which ones I'll accept being fixed. I like Phoenix Down better than Fenix Down, but I'll be damned if I read "Son of a Submariner" as "Son of a Sandworm" without being annoyed.
