I"m playing Ninja Giaden and NG2 again for the fun and achievements (respectively). Although NG2 is vastly inferior to it's predecessor, it's still a solid title.

Unfortunately, it's basically the only action game series I've ever played unless you count ARPGs and platformers. What else is out there, and more importantly, what is out there that is also good?

I did play god of war and I didn['t dislike it, but I preferred NG easily.

What about devil may cry? I've never touched one before, or the 3d castlevanias? Or something else that I haven't mentioned.

Devil May Cry series is similar in many aspects, although some may call it inferior to NG in terms of gameplay. I like them all personally, and would recommend them all (maybe not 2 as much, and I haven't played 4) if you haven't played them.

There is also the Onimusha series in which Devil May Cry's combat system was modeled after.

I enjoyed Shinobi for the PS2. The game has a lot of flaws, but it also has many good ideas for gameplay that I rarely see elsewhere.

Onimusha will feel rather sluggish if you're used to NG,
I agree with the Devil may Cry recomendations.
1 and 4 are oddly the better games in the series, with 3 coming close as well.
I'd avoid 2, though I can't actually *remember* why I didn't like it.

I guess I ask because I honestly hated having bought god of war. It wasn't that bad but it was waaaaay to overhyped for what I got. Finished it and traded it back in. I might look into DMC 4 on the xbox, does DMC1 work on the xbox or the 360?

To date, every 3d Castlevania sucks. I keep hoping that will change, but it never seems to.

I don't really have any reccomendations thoug. DMC4 was fun, missed out on 2 and 3 myself. I don't know if this was just a holiday thing, but Gamestop was selling Onimusha and DMC value packs for cheap. Something like 30-40$ for 3-4 games. Nice deal.

I was rather fond of curse of darkness, but honestly it's just a simple action game with a LOT of nostalgia. I never beat it.

I just couldn't get into Devil May Cry. I bought the first three games for next to nothing when a video rental store was going out of business. I played a few hours into the first one and never bothered with them again. It felt too much like a watered down Resident Evil with faster combat.

Beat the first boss, now I"m stick on the rod of trials.
Mentor Mode doesn't **** around. It feels like NG black except with no healing items.

I got DMC4 for 17$ today. It's not bad, might take it back though. The lack of a block button is a huge shock. I'm used to blocking everything and looking for popenings, not shotting stuff til it dies.

I unno I'll see how I like it after the third stage.

Then Onimusha is the series for you.

it takes some getting used to, you just have to learn how to dodge.

The problem with the dodge was that you could only "reverse wind" to the right or left, any other direction with RB would make me jump, which can be a dodge, but, eh

Anyway, I returned it and got infinite undiscovery for the same price. I did like it and could see myself finishing it, but I'm still trying to play eternal sonata, enchanted arms, and last remnant on the 360 alone. Too little time and so much to do you know.

I guess one of the reasons I liked NG so much is because it plays more like an ARPG than a simple action game. It felt like zelda with blood, lots of magic, weapons, projectiles, characters that interacted with you at shops and a lot of exploration. NG Black was actually pretty damn non-linear for an action game.

Im the opposite, i loved DMC, not so much with NG, NG doesn't reward you for doing anything different, i think i made it through at least 75% of the xbox one spamming the same move over and over again(i think its run forward jump attack, where you slash by at there heads), there was the odd enemy that wouldnt work on, but i even cleared most bosses with it.

even the one in the church, that i heard was one of the harder ones.

In DMC, you get rewarded for changing your moves up and getting creative, plus when you buy items (at least in 3) they go up in price, so you cant just have a surplus of healing.

I do agree that NG feels like it has a few more rpg elements than DMC though.

Flying Swallow, and if you try doing that on hard you'll die in about two seconds in NG, and they patched it in NG black. You need to use almost every single move to stay alive on hard and most of them on normal. The only thing that really consistently works is chaining ultimate attacks by using the on landing essence absorb, and you can still die.

Black is really the definitive version. It's better than the bit I played of sigma and much more ballanced than NG

From personal experiance, DMC3 was my favorite, you could do some insane combos, and mastering things like Trickster made boss fights fun.
