A few questions about classesFollow

#1 Feb 17 2009 at 10:15 AM Rating: Decent
So I finally decided to quit WoW after being fed up with the ridiculously immature player base and job like raiding system, and I've tried to 10 day free trial and am thoroughly enjoying it. However I'm having a bit of a hard time trying to figure out which class I want to stick with. In WoW I was pretty much the MT pally tank for our guild, and I love to tank. However, I also love the class lore of a paladin, the defender of the weak and protector of light. Plus it's awesome to be able to heal yourself. In Lotro however I find myself torn between a guardian (my desire to tank) and a Captain (the sheer fun of buffing, healing and dpsing all at the same time as well as the lore). So I understand that both these classes are desired endgame, however judging what from I've told you guys, what class to you think would right for being my first main character? Thanks again, I know they're like a million of these posts a day.

First of all, welcome to the land of the grownups! May your stay in Middle Earth bring you much joy and relaxation.

Now to your question;

Guardians are the ultimate tank in the game however, captains can tank quite well in most group situations and in most instances. However, the end game raids (and we only have a few) will still require a "specialist" (read Guardian)

You might also consider trying out a warden - this is a new class introduced with the Moria expansion and they are already proving to be very able and adaptable tanks.

Ultimately, no one can tell you which class you will enjoy playing the most but the good news is that your account will allow you to roll up 7 characters each on as many servers as you'd like, so there is no reason you can't try out all three of the classes mentioned above and decide for yourself which you prefer.

One word of advice - play each toon you roll till at least lvl 20 since the game really begins to develop there and a class that seems weak early on can end up being a lot more fun in later levels.

Thanks a lot for your input it was very helpful. I guess I'll just try them all out and maybe level them simultaneously. Thanks again, you obviously know your stuff!

Ahhh, shucks! /blush

I was a (closed) beta tester, I am a founder and a lifetime subscriber but none of that really proves anything! Hopefully you'll still think I "know my stuff" a year from now when you have one or more level capped characters! :)

In any case, thanks for the compliment...

The lore behind the Warden class is pretty neat and it may interest you. Protector of the outpost of Middle Earth, wearing medium armor so it can travel fast, ect. Playing a medium armor tank is different, but alot of fun, and the warden can survive pretty well. Its a great solo class for certain, and plays well with others:) No class can out-tank the Guardian, but the Warden can take hits(ok, dodge and block the hits, but you get my point) and does a solid job snatching agro off the squishy hunters and minstrels. My poor hunter has been relegated to a little crafting since Moria launched, and the champion I spent 2 months leveling waiting for Moria to launch is absolutely reeking of mothballs right now. And I loved the little dorf.

Having said all that, the Captain is probably the LOTRO class closest to the stereotype RPG Paladin.

I've been impressed with how well a good Captain can tank. Captains are also really nice to group with because of the buffs they can give their groups. I'd say if you're really intrigued by paladins, level a captain to at least 20. I believe (somebody correct me if I'm wrong) that captains can also do some healing and rezzing at higher levels. Always welcome additions to a group, but think of those more as a bonus rather than core contributions.

Keep in mind that it's not difficult to level a character in this game so don't be shy about trying out the different classes.

By the way, I'm in a kinship with both of those other yahoos who responded to you and they've given you solid advice.

You are correct Yan, captains currently make pretty good healers actually, and they do have a rez. For some reason I thought captains were limited to 2 handed weapons, but was recently corrected by Kit and Dot that they can "sword & board" also, which probably makes tanking quite a bit more effective.

And I do not consider myself a "yahoo", thank you very much. I'm more of a vegabond.

Vegabond? Bonded to vegetables?

From my experience, Captains can tank but I would use a rule of thumb to tank things/instances two levels (or more) lower than what a guardian can do*. (I would say even warden too.)

You can one hand it with a shield, but you can only wield a light shield. You might be better off with an aggro producing halberd. If you have a decent icpr one-hander, that might work with a shield.

My style is more geared to support with my Captain though and that is plenty fun in itself.

* e.g. I had no trouble tanking with a level 54 in the 3-man stuff in Eregion, but had oodles of trouble in the 6-man Treasury.

This is slightly off-topic, but why are we given 7 character slots when there are 9 classes? I'm a completionist, dammit, I want all of them. Smiley: mad

It's simple economics... nine does not go into seven which pressures you into a 2nd account... just do the math :)

Or just start them on another server...

Then I'd have to make 7 characters there, and I still wouldn't be able to have a full set. Smiley: frown

I agree with the advice about starting a few characters and taking them to 20. However, give your preference for tanking and self-healing, I think a Guardian would be more up your alley. A Captain does a bit of everything - heals, has a pet, buffs, debfuffs, tanks, and a bit of dps. Based on the make-up of a group, they could go from being a secondary healer to dps to tank. Very often in battles they won't be focusing on damaging the enemy (more focused on healing and providing the right support). The only self-heals they have are from a summoned "pet" (their hearld) and from a defeat-response skill (once they defeat an enemy they can get some health regen).

The guardian is much more adept at tanking, and also has more self-heals. I do play a captain, and never played a Guardian (as tanking doesn't interest me), but based on what you described for your prefered role, I'd say Guardian is what you'd likely like.
