Misleading title.

Here I was thinking that a hostile takeover has taken place and the offices of Blizzard and Vivendi have been invaded by rabid Runescape wombats Smiley: disappointed

It wouldn't take much to own WoW actually. That doesn't say a whole lot for Runescape.

I was going to say, basically any bozo with a box of rocks and half a brain could make a game better than WoW.

QFT. WoW gets the people because it sucks that hard. It's like the sun, people get too close and they just can't get away.

FFXI players crack me up. They've perfected denial to an artform of anti-logic. Because barely anyone plays FFXI, it must be a better game. Because FFXI is frustrating and time consuming, it must be a more rewarding experience. Because it has unbeatable content in the game, it must be well tuned. Because it has an odd control system (which adds no control, so it's pretty much a waste of time) it's more complex.

Face it, FFXI is a game designed soleley so that unskilled hacks can rise to the top if only they waste enough time bashing their chubby little heads against a brick wall. It's a relic from an age gone by, and for good reason.

There's plenty of criticism that can be applied to WoW, but it's nowhere close to being as bad as FFXI. Very few things are.

Or they could just think, you know, that it's a fun game to play.

For ***** sake, why can't people just realize that games are better to others for different reasons without pissing all over them for it (this goes for both FFXI fans and WoW fans). Smiley: rolleyes

1. That's a complete non sequitur. You could have said "It's hip to be a Square-Enix," and made more sense following my quote.

2. It's a terrible, terrible argument.

Because we still have Madden 20XX coming out every year. Because new MMORPGs are released every year that still have the same problems others have learned to correct.

Game designers are still designing terrible games. Because many designers don't bother to think about what makes a good game and yet go about creating anyway. Lately the game industry has gone down the crapper. There is very little worth buying. If people stop pretending like terrible game ideas are good ideas then pull demand will force designers into creating better games.

People need to stop buying the crappy games then.

I can see the merit in both FFXI and WoW. I fluctuate between the two, I like them both equally. Am I such a rarity?

People are still convincing themselves that those qualities which make a game terrible make it good.

There is merit in FFXI, but what it has done right is separate from what it has done wrong. WoW has made vast improvement on the flaws of FFXI while making limited trade offs for that gain. Pure grinding on the same mobs--though occasionally recolored--with the same abilities for days on end shouldn't be touted as content. It's filler, sawdust. Quest based grinding was a huge step forward for MMOs, it offered a far more novel experience. But even then quest based grinds are still largely grinds. People need to understand that this change was a step forward so that game design may continue to progress. IF people pretend that that particular aspect of FFXI is better than how it is executed in WoW then developers become confused about what players want, and the problem continues.

I want to prevent situations such as Smash Bros. Brawl. Melee had flaws, but it there were a lot of great accidental features that vastly improved the game. With Brawl, the design team sough to impose their vision of what the franchise should be over the desires of the consumer base. In the end we got a good, but largely forgettable game. Overall a step backwards from melee.

Actually it was a comment based on "Oh, look at the XXX million subscribers this game has, it must be super great, and NO ONE has made a better game!".

Your comment taken as it was, merely stated that WoW was the best game ever, and no one had created a better game.

Would you say that American Idol is better than any Anime you have watched, because it has more viewers? I doubt it.

Except no one said that. So you were responding to a comment no one had made, thus non sequitur. Get it yet?
TirithRR wrote:

My comment was a satirical poke at your downplaying WoW because of a fanboi feud you imagine between the games. Did you think I was making a serious comment about a game I had left and since played three other MMORPGs?
TirithRR wrote:

I'm going to be rude to you, but honestly you are begging for it. Please don't be this dumb. No one else here made any comments about the quality of the game based on subscription numbers. YOU brought it up. No one else did. You chose to imagine someone making that argument here for god only knows what reason. It's also one of the core stereotypical fanboi lines and reeks of cliche.

I don't see how anyone could say that, and not be "quantity" based. Because that did say "No one has created a better game that WoW".

Please tell me TirithRR where there is any, any reference at all, to subscription base. Please tell me how I explicitly or even implicitly said that WoW is a better game than FFXI because it has more subscribers.

It's also entirely frustrating that you are choosing to argue over this rather than any of the infinitely more important ideas here.

Where'd FFXI come into play?

You made a statement, that would only be factually true if it was quantity based. So I assumed you were not lying, and treated it as such.

What else is there to argue about? Runescape? That's not fun... that's so 1995.

Tirth, stating an opinion without specifically saying it is an opinion is not lying. Codyy's statement is a lie if you take this to be true (and it isn't) and so is yours, because neither are factual yet you did not state they were opinions. You're being absurd.

FFXI > WoW

I'll take "timesinks" over "Kill 20 X, get 10 Y, and talk to Z."*14235849034 anyday.

Let the nonsensical arguments begin!

FFXI is better than WoW if you like ffxi, and wow is better than ffxi if you like wow. They're two different types of games for two different types of people.
