I'm having major issues lately. I can't seem to find an RPG that's fun anymore.

I picked up Fallout 3, and Neverwinter Nights 2 (which, oddly enough, runs very poorly on 64 bit vista with an amazing graphics card and plenty of RAM... I think it may be the dual core thing that screws with it), both of which gave me a little fun, for a little bit of time. LOTRO is pretty boring now. I've been playing Day of Defeat: Source religiously, but I tire of it. I'm bored with Rappelz. EQ Live doesn't even appeal to me anymore.

I've tried just about every free MMO that appealed to me on the Free/Trial MMO list. I've been thinking about trying FFXI again, but I can't bring myself to do it because I've heard it's more like a prison sentence than an actual game (only got to level 6 the first time) and I don't think there's a digital download of a free trial.

At this point, I don't really think I'd care if I had to play a single-player RPG. I just need an RPG. I need suggestions... limited mainly to the PC. Aside from that, all I have is a gamecube =/

NWN2 ran better on my dual core laptop. Odd.

I should really reinstall that and play though it all the way.

I think they might have made it a bit easier, and check fileplanet, they might still have a trial if you wanted to try it.

EDIT: just click Free Trial

Awesome, thanks.

@Nix: I have no idea why it's acting up for me. It's... shaky. If I move when I have a popup message over my head (such as Stealth Mode Activated/Deactivated/etc.) it shows it twice, as though I was shaking a piece of paper or something. Hard to explain, but it's clunky on mine.

Sad to say.. the PC is the last platform to be playing to find either a large or good selection of rpgs.

Cheapest investment to rpg ratio for you would be getting a DS, or emulating older rpgs.

Mother 3 would be a good place to start. Once you get the gba emulator, you could look into riviera also.

So I installed FFXI trial again... etc. etc... got my registration key in my email, and it won't work. Ugh.

Going to try another email account and see if that key works for the trial. If not, I may have to just give up on it.

Why would you go back to something like that Smiley: frown

Really, after playing for 4-5 years and finally quitting, I can say that, if my end was to play rpgs, I would not want to play any mmo out there. If you want rpgs then get a 360 or DS and be happy.

I think I never really gave it a fair shot. The furthest I got was like level 6 on a hume warrior. For some odd reason it greatly appeals to me. We'll see... the trial is updating at the moment. Going to download the windower and give it a try tomorrow, methinks.

As for getting a 360 or DS, I can't afford much of anything at the moment. I'm a poor college kid (lolcollege) who pays for tuition out of pocket. I don't have any extra dough to throw around, even though I recently did on a new computer ($750) and NWN2/Fallout 3 ($80). I ****** up, lulz.

The ultimate RPG system is the PS2. I own at least 20 RPGs on that system alone.

If you're disenfranchised with RPGs, then don't go back to FFXI because it will only hurt.

Honestly the RPG genre seems to have very little to offer now. It simply hasn't matured like many other genres have.

FFXI is more like a drug addiction than a prison sentence. It shares the aspect that it's nearly impossible to break away from and escape and you find yourself hating yourself for being there... but you love almost everything about it while your using your drug..

;-;

If you start ffxi again for any reason, you probably won't get to experience the awesome addicting part until you get situation in a linkshell and get to become friends with the people in it and get to enjoy a lot of the things ffxi offers like nyzul, salvage, einherjar, sky, sea, dynamis, limbus, assault, pokemon, chocobo racing, etc.

Personally.. I'd say go play ff1 through 10, some starocean, etc if you want rpg so bad. Nothing beats going old school. (Air Fortress **** yeah!)

My 360 disagrees

I"m gonna tell you what's going to happen.

You're going to start ffxi, and you're going to love wandering around as a job from ff mythology and killing rabbits, and dying, lots of dying. You might even like the game as a whole; it certainly kept my attention for long enough. The chocobos and cid and monsters and magic and classes and everything, they will make you feel like you're just... it's just something amazing. Once you get to the level cap even, it seems like the content will never run out (and it won't).

But... but well. The job imbalance, the economy, the monster camping, the shot-in-the-dark quest system, waiting in lines like you're at six flags, hnm camping, meriting, lots of stuff, will eventually contribute towards too much work for very little reward. It's a job.

I dunno, you might like it, but I'd download the mother 3 .rar first.

oh yeas, ps2, also a lot of rpgs there, and psx rpgs can be played on that system.

Get that instead of a 360 or DS; they are like 50 dollars.

And there's:
-Final Fantasy
-Star Ocean
-Dark Cloud
-Suikoden
-Xenosaga
-Chrono Cross
-Disgaea (which isn't an RPG, but still awesome)
-Katamari Damacy(same as above)

And probably others I'm not thinking about right now.

just gonna toss this out there since it's relatively unheard of:

Titan Quest.

Essentially Diablo with updated graphics in a mythology setting.

Try the DS, they have a surprisingly large number of good ones. They also tend to have some different styles..roguelikes like izuna the unemplyed ninja and teh mystery dungeon series, wizardry throwbacks like etrian odyssey II, and just offbeat mechanics, like the world ends with you. Not to mention all the Square enix retro remakes and sequels.
