Does anyone know if Sony has any plans on bringing back the PS2 compatibility for the PS3? Just curious...

No idea. I thought the new ones supposed some PS1/PS2 games? In any case prob your best bet is to buy a 60 gig off e-bay. I used to have one and Ps1/PS2 games looked great on my HD tv.

Probably not, though its possible in the future they might have some kind of BC patch for it.

as it stands now you could probably get a ps2 and the lower tier ps3 for the same price as the bigger one.

I sold my PS2 to get a PS3 with no emulator. Now I want to play Persona 4, and it makes me sad.

The current gen PS3's can't play anything but PS3 games. I don't think they're bringing it back, unless it's software emulation only.

It's pretty stupid of them, but I suppose that subject's been done to death.

Been meaning to ask if anyone know for sure if FFVIII is playable on PS3? It won't work on mine, my apologies for hijacking this thread in this fashion, but with this thread on, it might be best to just add this question.

First time I tried playing older PS games, I had more luck with my PS1 games than PS2 games, even those I just bought. It's really not done well.

Is yours one of the ones that can't play PS2? Ok so maybe they can play PS1 or PS3, just not PS2. Not sure, I got a 60gb before they sold out so I get all 3.

How does everyone fail so hard at doing research?

google ps3 > ps3 > backwards compatibility on the ps3.

All playstation 3s can play ps3 games, all can play most ps1 games, only versions with 4 usb slots can play most ps2 games.

So I took that good advice, finally found a site which tries to list the PS1 and PS2 games that work on the PS3.

Some work perfectly, others seem to get stuck on the FMV's or not work at all. It sort of answers my question too on FF VIII, some versions work, others do not.

Sony site itself wasn't a big help, that's the one I found the last time I searched and it only says which type of PS3 has backward compatibility, not for which games.

I've never had to bother, I have my 60gb PS3, it plays all 3 versions of games just fine. Why would I want to? Smiley: tongue

They really need to make a new open world 4x4 game like 4x4 Evo.

Before I start, let me just say that I don't have a PS3 and I don't have the skills to pull off what I'm about to talk about.

Okay, I was just curious... do the new PS3s have the same motherboard as the old ones, just minus the PS2 Emotion Engine chip? If so, would it be possible for someone to take apart a broken PS2 and move said chip to a newer PS3 and then downgrade the firmware to a version supported by one of the models that came with the Emotion Engine?

sounds insane, and like it might owrk in theory, but i doubt it would work in practice.

plus, if you have an extra ps2 laying around, why bother trying to butcher it into the ps3 unless you really want just a ps3 out.

I like the crazy idea though.

I just thought of it because I remembered how people were taking the CPUs from PSP2000s and putting them in PSP3000s to run custom firmware, but with that, it only worked halfway because the screen wouldn't show anything and they could only see that it worked by connecting the PSP to a TV.

I thought a better way would be an update later on to add software emulation to newer systems.

I always hoped it was removed just because either a.) It was inefficient and caused problems, or b.) PS2 still drew a crowd and money from PS2 sales.

Either of these reasons would be fixed with time, and maybe make them add the software compatibility in an update (Just like the Xbox 360 added Xbox compatibility in an Update).
