A few questionFollow

I find myself in a position that at least a few others are in or have been in judging by the forums, that is looking for a new game. Im more then tired of WOW at the moment but have been with it for serveral years, and about 5 years of EQ before that. In most of that time I was raiding hardcore but I find I dont really want that anymore and Im not a big pvp fan. That leaves me thinking on the good points I have heard about this game.

Now that that is said I have been looking over classes while I download the trial and Im wondering what the real differences are in the caster classes of the game. I have tanked and healed in the past but I do miss being a caster as those 5 years in EQ were spent as a necro, as was part of my wow time a spent as a warlock. Also I wonder if when I get ingame I could ask some question from time to time of those of you in the fellowship I have seen talked about.

Thanks

First of all, I think I can speak for all of us when I say your questions are welcome anytime...

second, just a tip on jargon;
Quote:
...those of you in the fellowship I have seen talked about.

fellowship = group
kinship (or kin) = guild

third, in an effort to stay true to the writings of Tolkien (who had no magic users other than a very few wizards in LOTR) the game is a little short on true player caster classes.

Your choices include "rune keeper" a cloth armor class who do not use weapons and instead practice control of the elements through the use of rune stones

and "lore keeper" a cloth armor pet class who do some casting and use their pets to tank.

Best of luck and enjoy the world...

Thanks for the info and jargon corrections, always a key to getting along in a new game. Seems I will just have to try out both classes and others really to get a feel for everything.

Classes in LOTRO tend to be multi-taskers:)

The Runekeeper is designed to have 2 roles. 1) "Glass cannon" nuker. Think wizard from EQ. 2)Main healer in a fellowship. While not quite as effective as a minstrel in a group, RKs make excellent healers, as long as the person behind the keyboard knows what he/she is doing.

What's that you say? DPS and healing together would make the class uber and there would be no need for any other classes? Well sure, if the RK could use both its most powerful nukes and heals at the same time. They can't. Using lower level heals opens up higher level heals, casting a damage spell reduces the power of the heals available to you. Its a neat dynamic, and from what I can tell works pretty well.

The Loremaster has different pets, some heals, some minor nukes, and great crowd control abilities. They are highly sought after in fellowships going into big fights for another ability they have, the transfer of power to other fellowship members.

Try both classes and see what you think. Most classes really start to come into their own around level 20 or so, which doesn't take too long to get to. Good hunting!
