Super Mario Kart - The most influential game in history?Follow

Quote:
Tasked with selecting the best console games of all time, contributors of this year's Gamer's Edition reviewed hundreds of releases to compile a list of the top 50 titles ranked on their initial impact and lasting legacy.

Tetris ranks in at number two, according to the list, and the original Grand Theft Auto is in the number three spot. Where does Super Mario Bros. turn up? Way down at number 17, beneath Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

Guinness World Records Editor-in-Chief, Craig Glenday, said of the selection process: "We knew this would be a complex task so we invited a crack team of industry experts to form a judging panel - and the result is a "top 50" list of games ranked both on their importance and on how fun they are to play."

I would love to know who was on their team, because their picks are just friggin insane.

The team said they picked Super Mario Kart for the top spot because it is the best-selling racer on the SNES, the GameCube and the DS. Tetris, a good choice for number two, was selected because it is available on at least 50 different gaming platforms. And Grand Theft Auto holds the record for the most controversial series of games.

Some of the games (the link shows the full top 50) surprise me, either because of their position in the charts, or that they were chosen for the list at all. For instance, they voted FFXII over FFVII

I dont see how sales translates to influence.

The only games Super Mario Kart influenced are later Mario Kart games.

Wow. I honestly think that's worst top 50 list I've ever had the chance to look at. Smiley: disappointed They should get some better pickers, srsly.

Yeah, um, no.

Their judges should have done stuff like "lasting influence on pop culture references" as their biggest determinator of impact. 20 years later and Mike Tyson's Punchout!! is still getting The Online headlines.

Yeah, their method of selecting and positioning games was pretty sketchy.

Out of interest though , if you had to pick the top 3 games that had been most influential in your own life (as opposed to on everyone else) which games would you pick ?

I think sometimes they go with something new. I don't see how people even enjoyed Final Fantasy 12 let alone vote for it over X, VI, or VII.

Far as Mario Kart goes I like the SNES version and I liked the N64 version. Past that it was just the same thing over and over again IMO.

Tetris is far far more popular and played than some silly kart game. It really should be in the number one slot. Actually, now that I've looked at the list, they need to scrap the whole thing and try again with better criteria.

Well, maybe by "influential" they mean "how many other kart racer games there have been as a result."

Lets see here... off the top of my head, and a little google, I can think of:

* Chocobo racing
* Muppet Mania Racing
* Sonic Drift
* Crash Team Racer (Crash Bandicoot)
* Crazy Frog Kart Racer
* Jak X
* (I'm fairly certain there was a Smurfs kart racer)
* Konami Krazy Racers
* Diddy Kong Racing (although slightly related)
* The Flintstones Bedrock Racing
* Banjo Pilot
* Digimon Racing
* Motor Kombat...

I'm fairly certain every franchise has some sort of "Kart Racing" game by now since the release of the first Mario Kart game.

95% of them are terrible games though.

You know what would have been an awesome mash up game? Mario Cart vs Twisted Metal.

I use to play this game. Yes it is the first of its kind so it can be considered as influential.
