To keep it short...Should I switch from WoW to this? I have heard good things of this game and decided i might try the demo. After realizing my Laptop doesn't have 9 gigs to spare it looks like I will...
A.) Either have to wait 3 weeks till I get my new desktop
B.) Ask the Alla community.

I decided to do a two pronged approach.
Thanks in advance.

There's not much pressure to get to "endgame" content in LOTRO. You can take it nice and slow, relax, and level at your own pace, and nobody will really get on you about it, even in a kinship setting.

The people are, as a rule of thumb, a bit more mature. I'm sure that if you go to the Ettenmoors (PvMP [player versus monster player] zone), chances are you'll start to meet some of the loud, immature people. That, and in the [glff] (global looking for fellowship) channel. Aside from those two areas, it tends to be pretty laid back and relaxed.

People will normally help you with things that aren't 100% common sense or explicitly outlined in the quest log (which most things are). If you need help with a tougher quest, you can normally find help before too terribly long. Usually by someone that also needs the very same quest, but sometimes by those that are just bored, and a higher level, working on slayer deeds in the zone.

The classes are each pretty unique. Each one has its particular playstyle, and they don't feel as though they are copies of one another.

I've never played WOW, but from what I hear:

- Less emphasis in LOTRO vs. WOW on PvP.
- Experience in LOTRO comes about 40-60% from quests, meaning more emphasis is on quests rather than straight grinding.
- Until the end game, the best equipment comes equally from quest rewards and player crafted items. There are still the rare epic item drops, but they are not significanlty better than what is available from the player-community or rewards.
- I hear the community is much more mature than WOW.
- Graphically speaking, LOTRO is much more "realistic" (if you can say that about a fantasy genre game).

Well, in LOTRO the armor doesn't have huge spikey things on the helms & shoulders and most of the armor doesn't make me feel like my character is wearing a big red nose and inflated shoes.

Oh, yeah... and the weapons don't look like a graphic representation of an over sized phallus so yeah... LOTRO is more realistic...

Whenever I see a screen grab of a character from WoW, I always wonder if it just climbed out of a tiny car under a spotlight in the center ring...

okay so some quick questions.
A.) Are there mounts? I like mounts :)
B.) Can you play evil races?
C.) How is the endgame content/server population?
D.) Throw anything else you want in there.

P.S. I was thinking of the Rune-keeper class. Is he fun?

OK, some quick answers,
Quote:
A.) Are there mounts?

Yes, there are rental mounts available at lvl 1 and personal mounts (horses and ponies only) available for purchase at lvl 35.

Quote:
B.) Can you play evil races?

Yes but only in the LOTRO version of PvP. Here it's called PvMP (Player Vs Monster Player) and you can play as a warg, a spider, an orc etc...

In PvE you are only allowed to be one of the Free Peoples and help in the defeat of Sauron and the forces of darkness.

Quote:
C.) How is the endgame content/server population?

Server population tends to be excellent. The game is vibrant and subscriber base is growing all the time. Endgame content may not be what you expect. We have very few endgame raids but there is still plenty to do at level cap.

Turbine tends to release a major free content update every couple months and the first one since the last paid expansion is about to go live. These free updates always include a large new land area to explore and play in, (This one will be the Elven city of Lothlorien and the surrounding area) as well as various changes to game systems and mechanics.

I have an RK that I play as an alt (in his mid 30s now) and I think they are lots of fun. Considered a glass cannon (they are high damage output in cloth armor) the class is designed to function as a hybrid nuker/healer and although they die a lot (well, mine does) can be a blast to play!

As far as subscirber base, LOTRO is a fraction of what WOW is. One chart I saw based on mid-2008 users was WOW around 11 million and LOTRO around 500,000. There are no hard stats on LOTRO subscription numbers since the company is private and the information is not released.

I can say that the population is the lightest in the beginng areas, and the end-game has the most players.

Well when I get my new Comp I am seriously considering switching over. As for the subscriber base of wow that is why I am leaving. To many people at the high lvl. Annoying. And I am looking forward to playing a "glass-cannon" My mains in WoW were a Pally tank and a DK tank. Iv never been "soft". So I am now jazzed about this game. ;)
