PSX/PS2 EmulationFollow

#1 Mar 07 2009 at 9:31 PM Rating: Good
I'm going to get straight to the point. I have found a lot of PSX emulators. I have found a lot of ROMs for the games I want. Pretty much, I need to know which ones will work with Final Fantasy 7-12 and Legend of Dragoon. I haven't toyed with anything other than old cartridge console emulators (those are a cinch) and after trying to read up on the newer platform's emulators my head is starting to spin. Let it be known that I own ALL of these games before anyone wastes their time with their internet lawyer impressions.

all the PS1 FF games should work fine with ePSXe. also This

If you want to download the Natural Vision shader i can up it to rapidshare, since the forum its linked on requires registration.

as for FF12, PCSX2 might be able to run it.

Is the Natural Vision shader the one that makes PS1 games have nearly the same quality as PS2 ones? If so can I get that link also?

Yeah, this does seem like the way to go. And my girlfriend told me all about how I needed the ISO files and whatnot. So, pretty much I'm downloading all the files and she'll sort it out for me when I go on leave. Smiley: lol

Any admins reading this, if there's anything in my post that is against the rules, feel free to edit/remove the offending content.

I'm writing this response not only for the OP, but for others who are interested.

From what I've read, Legend of Dragoon is really tricky because of the copy protection Sony put into it. I've read on some forums that people had to use different emulators during different parts of the game because many of them freeze at one point or another. I suggest you read the following post from the pSX Emulator forums: Legend of Dragoon Bug Guide

I'm guessing that you are only interested in emulation on the PC, but just in case, the POPS Compatibility List shows that Legend of Dragoon appears to play through without issue on PSP Custom Firmware version 5.00 M33-4, so I imagine it would work on the most recent M33 version (5.00 M33-6) as well. I'm not sure about other firmware versions like GEN, but it appears it didn't work on older M33 firmwares. Obviously, it won't play at all using Sony's official firmware.

As far as PS1 emulators, it seems that the most popular ones are ePSXe and pSX. I couldn't ever get ePSXe to work properly with my computer. Since a link to ePSXe appears to have already been posted, here's one to pSX: psxemulator.gazaxian.com There's a link to its compatibility list at the bottom of the page.

One thing to keep in mind when comparing emulators is whether they were designed to enhance games' sound and appearance via plugins or they were designed to accurately emulate the original system. ePSXe uses plugins to improve the game, so it'll look and possibly sound much crisper on your computer than on a real PlayStation, but only if your computer can handle it. pSX, on the other hand, focuses on looking and sounding as close to a real PlayStation as possible. The nice thing about this is that it doesn't need much to run, requires almost no configuration setup and it works with a lot of games.

I don't know anything about PS2 emulataion unfortunately, but I believe that there is an emulator out that uses plugins made by the same guy that made most of the plugins for ePSXe.

To get ISOs for games you already have, I recommend using a CD ripping program (I use MagicISO) to rip the game. I'm not sure about ePSXe, but pSX can mount ISO, BIN and IMG format images without the need of programs like DaemonTools, and it is able to open files saved in ePSXe's card format. I found this out because CWCheat on the PSP is the only way I could find to transfer my FFVII game file from my PSP to my computer when the game was freezing during videos, and it saved in the ePSXe format.

If you are looking for ISOs for games you don't own (for shame...) you might want to try NitroRoms or Zophar's Domain (I'm not posting links because I don't know if it would be against the forum rules.) NitroRoms hosts their files on Chinese servers, so if you're worried about accessing Chinese servers, don't go there. Zophar's Domain is a little more difficult to find their PlayStation ISOs, because the list can't be accessed from links on the site itself. I found it by accident doing an internet search. While not related to the topic of this post, I think I should mention that Zophar's Domain also has a lot of music files ripped from games for many consoles.

Have fun.

EPSXE was the one that came highly recommended. Final Fantasy 7 was the first one ready and I couldn't get it to run for the life of me. I tried everything. Finally I downloaded PSX and it ran right off the cue file without a hitch. Smiley: lol That was a wasted 5 hours. Thanks for the LoD link, bud.

I HEART pSX! It may not look pretty, but it gets the job done. (Most of the time... Syphon Filter was a little sketchy.)

BTW, are you going to play using keyboard or control pad? I think they make xBox controllers that work with computers now. I'm using a PS2 controller connected through a an old Radio Shack PSX/USB converter myself.

I'm using the keyboard. I may invest in a gamepad or controller converter if it keeps working this well.

I use ePSXe to run FFIX and it works like a charm. Wasn't even that difficult to set up iirc. Below is the bookmarks folder I have with various information that may or may not be useful (for FFIX, VII, and VIII I think).

Does anyone know of a non-plugin based PS2 emulator?

I'm guessing based on my experience with ePSXe that my computer can't handle a plugin-based emulator, but my PS2's got a real problem and I'm afraid to use it anymore... It makes a grinding noise and it freezes at times, especially when starting battles in RPGs. I'm pretty sure it's a problem with the gear that moves the laser assembly back and forth, but I could be wrong. Anyway, I used to just shake the PS2 from side to side to unfreeze it, but the last time I did it, I think if damaged my Suikoden V disc, because now it won't load the screen where you load your memory card when I turn the game on.

The best one I've been able to find is the PCSX2. They have a pretty big list of what it runs as well.

Thanks. I looked it up, but I might not have time to try it out for a few days. I'll here post again once I know if it works on my computer.

Well, I tried PCSX2 and it looks like my computer can't handle it well enough for me to want to use it. I think my graphics card is okay, but my processor isn't good enough for it to play things at a decent speed. I tried using some of the speedhacks, and they got it running faster (but still laggy) and they made the sound skippy. There was an option to fix this, but it slowed it down some.

At least I tried...

I think eventually I'm just going to need to get my PS2 fixed or buy a new one. It's got a hard drive with all my save files on it, so I don't want one of the new ones though.
