Valkyria Chronicles didn't have a bad idea, but it was executed poorly.

Luckily, Nippon Ichi has a reputation for making pretty good RPGs.

I'm sorry to hear that. I've only played the demo and found it to be tons of fun(waiting on the price to go down to buy it).

What's wrong with the full game, might I ask?

I played the demo too, and all I could think of as I was moving troops around and picking off enemies is "OMG this is boring". Just not for me, I like the graphics and the idea, just was not that entertaining for me.

What was wrong with Valkyria Chronicles? I enjoyed the hell out of it.

Is the actual game a lot like the demo? Because if so, I imagine I'll be enjoying it as well.

I'm enjoying Valkyria Chronicles right now, it's fun and there is a lot of strategy. I'm not too far into it, but it is keeping me interested.

It does have it's flaws. The tactical overhead maps are not nearly detailed enough, I'm continually frustrated by the terrain, thinking I can get from point A to point B when in reality there is a barrier of some kind preventing me. The rock, paper, scissor aspect of troop strengths and weaknesses is overly simple, but leads itself to enough gameplay strategy to make battles fun.

For me it's a little too turn based Smiley: laugh

For the record, I have no doubt it's a fine game, the graphics are great, what little I played visually looked good to me, but the game play just isn't for me. Boring as hell. But if you like it I'm glad, I was a little disappointed in it but I'm sure there are those out there that love the game and more power to them.

I think the fundamental flaw is that the AI was terrible. If your forces were remotely equivalent to the enemy forces you could easily stomp the AI, so to increase the difficulty the AI is given more/better units. This isn't something unique to Valkyria, but the problem is how it works with Valkyria's rule system. There are some missions, such as a specific "defend this base" mission my friend played countless times over, where AI is capable of winning the mission at any time, and it is only if you luck out and it decides not to win that you can actually be victorious. You are supposed to prevent a base from being captured, but nearby in the grass the AI has a scout unit that can take over the base in just two commands. You are not allowed to position your troops in such a way as to prevent this.

There are quite a few mission like that, where the AI can simply win if it chooses to.

The game is also a little shallow on strategy, though there is a certain degree of tactical depth.

Sounds like Radiant Dawn...

fire emblem is normally great because your units are just so much better than the computer, to compensate for the number difference. In radiant dawn, your forces were suddenly equal to the computer, until near the end of the game.

I quit playing when I got to that point. It was crap. Pure and simple.

Remake Final Fantasy Tactics with similar game play to Valkyria Chronicles (I only played the demo as well) and I think you have the game of the year.
