Experienced WoW player looking for advice.Follow

#1 Mar 17 2009 at 5:08 PM Rating: Decent
Hello, all. I've been playing WoW for a while now. I currently have a level 80 Prot Paladin and am currently getting a little burnt out after getting pretty much every best in slot item for my class. I have a couple of questions.

1.) Are there any sites that I could be pointed to that compare LotRO to WoW or that can translate certain LotRO elements into WoW terminology (LotRO equivalents to talents, the different equipment color rankings in LotRO, etc.) ?

2.) I am thinking of trying out a Guardian, for obvious reasons, and was wondering if there were any guides as to min/maxing the class such as race and any other variables?

3.) Is there any one server with the "best" player base that is currently farming end game content?

Well, this is all I could think of at the moment. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Grats but my recommendation is, if you intend to try this game, don't make the same mistakes here that you made in WoW. (I have the best of everything and now I'm bored)

This game is not about "farming end game content" so if that is your game plan, it may be best to just walk away now. In point of fact, we really have no end game content to speak of. I believe there are currently a total of 2 or 3... oh, wait... maybe it's 4 end game raids and the gear derived from them is not all that much better than what you can craft, buy or get from drops off of mobs elsewhere. Again... LOTRO is not about high level raiding..

min/max-ers are scorned and in many cases shunned like child molesters so I'd walk away from that strategy as well.

LOTRO is also not about PvP so if you're hoping to work on the size of your E-peen, once again... save yourself a few months of disappointment and just walk away now.

What LOTRO IS about is the journey... (not the destination). It's about following in the footsteps of "The Nine" and experiencing the world of Middle Earth as envisioned and created by JRR Tolkien. It is not a requirement that you have read the trilogy but it helps! Having seen the movies makes no difference and in fact could be viewed as a liability.

Best of luck in whatever game you end up with but based on your original post, it sounds to me like WoW is the right place for you.

I know the game is not about end game content. I am interested in getting into a game where I am not going out and killing 10 wolves for some stupid *** reason. I love Middle Earth and know more about it than Azeroth.

The min/maxing question was just my way of asking "which race has the best 'racials' for the guardian class?" If this is frowned upon and you should just play whatever race you want then that answers my question.

Also, instead of asking about a server with a good player base, end game raiding, blah blah, I was just looking for a good server or place to set up shop where maybe some former WoW players have taken refuge.

Oh...and I don't PvP at all. I play a Prot Paladin...I like tanking bosses and doing PvE. So I am not into the whole epeen ****. I get my jollies off of finding skilled players who know what they are doing and work well together to work through content, be it quests or stories or whatever...

Important gamer fundamental #1: play the way you like. If you like min/maxing, there is certainly room to do that in LOTRO. I wouldn't go so far as to call it "frowned upon," I tend to think that people just don't care about it that much yet. Mostly because there isn't much of an endgame (yet), and generally speaking even a decently equipped character will succeed.

Also, min/maxing is a bit more difficult in LOTRO, because (a) the players don't do much of it, so it's hard to find the best stuff at any given level on the AH, or even information on where to find the best stuff, and (b) the world drop equipment is apparently pretty random. You can't, for example, go and hunt a typical named Elite and know he has a X% chance of dropping Awesome Sword +1.

Don't let the stodgy Tolkein fanatics (of which I am one) dictate your style of play. The setting and player base is much more laid-back than WoW, for sure, and a lot of things are different, but that doesn't mean there's no room for your particular style of play.

For crafting do you HAVE to pick a vocation? What if I want to be a weaponsmith, armorsmith and whichever gathering professions that would complement the two? I read the vocation page and there doesn't seem to be that combination but is it possible to do it or must u pick a certain vocation?

For races, which one has the best defense racials or do they all compliment each class their own way? To me, it seems like Elf hunters would be the best option lore wise...but do the racials beg to differ?

You have to pick a vocation. They don't want one character to be completely self-sufficient, so they spread the supplier crafts and the consumer crafts over the various vocations.

Nothing that says you can't have all the crafts covered on your various mule characters though.

As for racial stuff, I am not really super familiar with it yet. I've been playing the game off and on since it went live, but VERY off and on. I know Hobbits have some defensive traits (hobbit toughness? something like that.) And I'd assume dwarves do too, but I'm not sure. You can go to lotro.com and look up some basic info there.

This game can make it tough for min/max builds. For example, Dwarves seem perfect for guardians and champions, but there is a racial trait only available to Men that gives an ~3000 morale in-combat heal, so many people feel Men make the best choice for any class available to them. Personally I've tried to pick different races for each class I was going to play, just to keep things interesting.

I have a lot of hobbits just because I can.

There's one major drawback. In tight quarters your view of the world becomes human and elf butts.

Not really such a bad thing if they happen to be girl humans and girl elfs...

Well I just downloaded the 10 day free trial...

I tried to launch the game in directX 10 mode, or whatever, and it didn't seem to load up each time I tried. Is there something I need to do to fix that? I would love to play with the graphics pimped out seeing as my computer can most likely handle it (2gigs, 640gig hard drive, core 2 duo 2.4ghz processor, nvidia 8600, vista 32bit).

With the 10 day free trial...is it like the WoW free trial? Do you have to start up your characters from scratch or will I just have to activate my account with CD keys and be able to continue from where I left off?

I noticed "the undying" title and that you obtain it by not dying from level 1 to 20. Are there any other achievements or anything like that early on? I am just concerned with leveling up and missing something and having to "re-roll" in order to get it. I know its not a big deal but I like to accomplish everything that I can and not really miss out on anything.

Your trial characters can be carried forward if you'd like. You can upgrade from the trial.

Based on your listed computer stats,
Quote:
2gigs
640gig hard drive
core 2 duo 2.4ghz processor
nvidia 8600
vista 32bit

I don't think you'll be anywhere near the top end in performance. 2GB is below recommended for vista (you should have 3 or 4GB). The 8600, while ample for WoW is a little bit weak for this game (an 8800 is considered the default minimum card here). Your CPU will do fine and the hard disc stat is not relevant.

This is not to say you can't play with your rig... only that you won't run smoothly at higher display levels. If you set up in high or extreme you'll likely see low FPS with lots of hitching and plenty of lag! (so I'd say hold off on DX10 till you have more computer to push it with)

There is however an auto function built into the options panel so you can have the server examine your system and give you an optimum setting to run in. you might try that and see where it takes you...

Yeah, I noticed the suggested video preference button just now.

Is the collector's edition worth it? I saw one at Bestbuy still on the shelves and was thinking of picking it up. Are the extra items helpful?

Most people on here are on Melendor, correct?

Yeah, we're on Meneldor. Kinship is named There is No Fifth Star. And I'm probably the resident min/max endgame raider of the group at the moment. We don't really do many raids as a kinship right now, although I think we're about to start. Everyone is pretty helpful.

You should come play with us because we have pie. Lots of pie.

Oh, and I only have one special item, the radiance pipe, it is marginally useful. I never tried the others.

I came to Lotro from Wow, finally quitting the raiding guild i was in for something a little more 'fun' which should be the whole point of the time we spend away from work. Spending ages farming for gold to be able to afford to buy the pots required for end game raids, looking back it seemed a little crazy. No, from my small amount of experience with lotro, I must say that in general, superfast levelling and gear snobbery in the end game seems to be absent, which for me is a good thing (i feel i can speak from experience on the wow side, I was in a good raiding guild, we were the fourth guild to complete all the wotlk content on my server), I fully intend to enjoy this game though all its levels at a pace that suits me and with other players that also suit me. So far in Lotro I have not seen "ROFLMAO you are such a NUBCAKE OMFG OMFG " at all.And that has to be a good thing.

Are the special items only good for one character? Are the items bound to that character or can u transfer them to all of your characters?

Any word on any special achievements that are level specific? Anything I should watch for a list someone can point me to so I don't miss something along the way and have to reroll my character? Again, sorry for being a little **** retentive but I like to try to do everything with my characters that they can possibly do.

I got one token for a special item for each character.

As far as special achievements...don't die for the first 20 levels.
We can explain everything else in-game.

See you on Meneldor, There is No Fifth Star!

I am currently level 8 and I am loving it. I love the combat system, a lot! My Guardian is named Toddrick if anyone could message him or just let me know who to message to maybe snag an invite if I could.

Don't worry about leveling past achievements. You can go back and complete low level deeds to your heart's content. The only exceptions are the titles you get for not dying through your first 20 levels. Every area has specific deeds (kill X amount of wolves in the Shire, complete X amount of quests in the Misty Mountains). The first phase of completing the deed generally gets you a title, completing the advanced portion of the deed usually rewards you with a virtue (justice, discipline, etc.). Virtues help to strengthen and customize your character. If you're really interested in min/maxing you're going to probably focus on virtues quite a bit.

There are also achievements that don't open up for us until we reach a certain level. These are usually our race enmity deeds. Every race has a couple mob types they're particularly hostile toward. For hobbits, for example it's wolves and spiders, for humans it's wights and wargs. Every race has one stat that's pretty weak when we begin. These racial enmity deed completions generally reward you with a trait that brings that weak racial stat into balance.

The color ranking on gear will be easy for you to figure out. Grey = very common. Yellow = might be worth using, purple = check it out before you vendor it, teal = yay!

Some items are bind on acquire, many are bind on equip. This helps quite a bit to keep crafting gear a viable way to spend time. There is no single crafting vocation that makes heavy armour and weapons, sorry. Supply the components and you shouldn't have much trouble finding a kinsmate to craft nice goodies for you.

Can you change your virtues later on down the road? Kind of like a respec in WoW terms?

Yes, you can change your virtues by visiting a bard. Cost a little coin, but you can change up depending on what the situation is going to call for.

It's been so long since I played WoW I don't remember the details of respeccing but there are no restrictions on redoing your virtues, other than your bank balance (and it's not all that expensive). Experiment with 5 different arrangements in one day to see which you like best if you want to.

Is there a way to look to see a kinship's online members if u aren't in the kinship? I tried to do a /who tisnfs but that didn't work. I feel bad cause I was getting sick of the whole tank and spank with the guardian (cause I raid with my prot paladin still) so I decided to try out the hunter and I am liking it. Toddarcus is his name, if anyone could send me a message to invite me. I did a /who on all those officers names but I can't find one on. Thanks!
