I personally have mixed feelings about Resident Evil 5. I played through and beat it at least a dozen times both solo and with friends, and while the game is actually pretty good, it just did not feel like it lived up to the Resident Evil name.

Again, this is all my own opinion, but I felt that the game was ridiculously easy. All of the other RE titles that I played (RE1, 2, and 3) actually proved somewhat difficult for me between all the puzzles to be solved, all the keys to be hunted down, and all the zombies to fight back. Resident Evil 5 maybe had one puzzle in the entire game (when you play with the mirrors later in the game that 1-shot you if you cross the beams). The Las Plagas (spelling?) also don't pose much of a threat, since they are easy to take out and dodge their attacks. There also seems to be from what I remember of it an easy-mode method to each boss in the game which makes them easily taken out within a couple minutes (minus a couple bosses).

Also, the partner you get really is nothing but dead weight that holds you down throughout the whole game, but if you played with a friend, I suppose it would make the game even easier. I would go as far to say that having a partner increases the challenge instead of being there to assist you like the game intended. Like mentioned already, she burns through any and all ammo you give her, provided she has the weapon to load it with. I personally gave her the handgun throughout the whole game during my first play through and did great.

Don't get me wrong about RE5 though, it really is an amazing game, I just don't feel that it provided enough challenge like the previous games did. Every time you beat the game, it just becomes even easier, and after beating it multiple times, even the hardest difficulty becomes trivial if you activate the extras (infinite ammo rocket launcher, magnum, shotgun, etc.). I personally activate the infinite ammo when playing solo on the harder mode, because it seems that Sheva can't help but dive bomb into a pack of zombies whenever she gets the chance.

Besides all of that though, the graphics are amazing, the enemy players are interesting (zombies toting rocket launchers? awesome.), the cutscenes were also well done and the replay value of this game is through the roof. This game for me did not get old too quickly, since trying to achieve S ranking in every stage can actually be fun. The stages are short enough (and you can actually stage select in this game) where you actually want to go back and try it again to see if you can do better and not get burnt out.

It has been about a month since I played this game, so if I have any information that is inaccurate, feel free to correct me.

I recently played RE2, so i cant speak right now about RE1/3, but RE2 had very little if any puzzles, unless you count the key hunting as puzzles, well there was one puzzle in the basement, but it so pathetically easy i got it in 1 try without even thinking (I think it was just, up down up down up for the switches), the bosses I can agree with, but IMO there better than the old bosses, which may have been harder, but were really just big basic enemies, where the bosses in the new ones have more of a large scale cinimatic feel to them.

Also, enemies in the old ones were pretty easy too, its just that they dont drop ammo, so you have less which makes them a bit scarier even if they were capable of exactly the same damage/attacks.

While you are right that the enemies in the previous titles were still easy to kill, you have to admit that the Las Plagas in RE5 are far less threatening than any other zombie encountered thus far in the series. In RE5 there are numerous ways to eliminate zombies with ease, such as simply shooting them in the leg, followed by a melee move which leaves them vulnerable to an instant kill with your knife. Sometimes you can even bypass the melee punch/kick due to the zombie falling to the ground within 1-2 bullets to the leg leading to an instant kill right away. That is even if you feel like shooting him in the leg, since you can easily get the same effect from using your knife while Sheva watches your back (if you're lucky). Pack of zombies? No problem! Throw a grenade. There are plenty of them in almost every level.

In my opinion, I'd think that the RE1-3 titles had tougher zombies to take out due to, like you mentioned, no ammo drops, the knife only being useful if the zombie is already damaged laying on the ground, and you couldn't break free from zombie attacks like you can in RE5 (to which you can then counter-attack immediately after being grappled). Sure, Las Plagas can actually run towards you or maybe instead throw things at you from far away, but if you remember, when they run up to you they end up stopping dead in their tracks a couple feet in front of you leaving them open for your first attack.

I am not disagreeing at all that the RE1-3 zombies are any harder (shoot them until they fall, knife them, if they get up then just shoot them till they fall again) than the ones in RE5, it is just that since they are now designed to run and throw, as well as travel in bigger numbers than in previous titles, that they have become more flimsy taking challenge out of the game. It has been a long time since I played the other titles (I played the RE1-3 when they came out for PS2, and than re-bought all of them for GameCube for another play through), but I don't remember the zombies in the earlier titles even having any knock back effect when shooting them. I could be wrong though, I am talking years since the last time I picked up any of the previous titles, so I can only go by memory right now.

Again, yeah in the end it doesn't matter because the real baddies don't show their faces until late in the game, and the initial enemies are nothing more than target dummies to get used to the controls.
