Did anyone else think this game failed?

I was going through making backups of all my old PS2 RPGs today. FFX, X-2, XII, Grandia II, and I saw Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter...

I never finished the game. I hated the constant restarted required. I really found it stupid that fully awakening the dragon inside you caused you to lose your humanity and it was game over. The previous games awakening your Dragon Powers was a pivotal plot point!

I'm thinking about firing it up again and seeing if I have any more success this time around. Maybe the first time I played it I was expecting it to be another Breath of Fire game, and it ruined my opinion of the game?

Whilst I know a lot of people tend to really dislike Dragon Quarter, I'd have to say that I actually rather enjoyed it when I played through it. I also don't tend to think of it as a direct installment in the Breath of fire series, having said to people I would like to see a 5th installment as opposed to asking for a 6th.

The big complaint I see with the game is with regards to the dragon counter, it makes it very difficult to gauge how much you can grind on your first play through since you don't know the distance to go. This did make a couple of the fights difficult and could be seen badly. Personally I actually rather liked it, it added an extra bit of tension to the story, would I be able to make it to the end? Would spending that 6% mean I would fall short of the finish post? I genuinely thought it was a good mechanic as opposed to a lot of games where you could just spam the currently most powerful move to obliterate everything in your path, the dragon form was really that powerful but you knew you could only use it as a last resort.

As for the game over aspect, I think it was a fairly natural change of pace. In at least three there was the looming threat of losing control and the loss of humanity, from accessing a certain dragon form early and with regards to a lot of the closing story. Only difference was not letting you avoid that fate and a heavier focus on that outcome.

Some of the fights are a tad vicious though, although it's been a while I'm sure they're all beatable on the first play through though. (yes if you did worry about it you could end up new gaming your story a lot.)

*edit* /sigh I have enough on my plate to work through at the moment... but now I want to replay this as well... my poor free time ; ;

Needing to ask this question at all is an abysmally atrocious gameplay feature. It's like everything that allegory said was bad about mass effect, but I would agree with it this time.

Personally I loved Dragon Quarter. Best of the BoF series IMO. The story and setting was great, the gameplay solid, and the replay value surprisingly high for an RPG. The Dragon Counter was a really interesting feature as well because it gave you an insane cheap out option but made you really scared to use it.

Edit: That was much lulz to read.

Breath of Fire 3 was the best of the series, hands down no question asked or listened to. The Master system was well rounded, the dragon genes was interesting, the story was good, and it had those searoaches. Just figuring out how to make Rei's Weretiger form useful was fun.

Scuttle, scuttle, scuttle, Romeo ...

Rei also made the best sound ever when he attacked. I loved that game, the only problem I had was that I hate (and you're going to hate me for this) Heroic Mimes

I haven't played Dragon Quarter, and now I probably won't.

It's definitely worth a play through. It's VERY different from the other BoF games but it's a great game regardless. Personally I like it more than the other BoF games just because it's so different, and overall a much more interesting game.

Don't play it. BOF I-III were tons better than this. I have tried picking up DQ 3three separate times now and still just CAN'T get into this game.

I actually may play it anyway. I really want to play a console RPG, it's been so long since I've played one, crappy or not, it's just a matter of finding a copy.

There's probably better choices out there depending on what systems you have, but if you really want to play it you never know you could end up loving it.
