Don't know if this is a good place for this, but I decided to give SWG a try and downloaded the trial. However, I'll be playing and only about 5-10 minutes into playing my game will just freeze up. I'll ctrl+alt+del and my task manager will say the game isn't responding and I'll end task.

Anyone know why it's doing this? It is not my PC, because I can play any other MMO flawlessly. City of Heroes, WoW, Warhammer, no problem, and SWG doesn't seem to require any higher performance than those games. So what's the deal?

Have you tried playing with some of the settings?

I know it sounds weird but it wouldn't be the first time ive seen a a game be fussy with a setting that your comp should be able to handle.
#3 May 18 2009 at 11:23 AM Rating: Decent
Actually the game gets MORE fussy when I go into the settings. I did fiddle around but I didn't really see anything familiar that might help improve performance, though I attribute that to me being unfamiliar with SWG's options.

Well I think it's just the game itself is buggy as all hell. I turned down everything to the bar minimum and unchecked every box I could under graphics and it still freezes. The voices are buggy as well, skipping and stuttering all the time...

Hmm, doesnt sound like anything ive heard of before, have you tried browsing the Support Forums?
#6 May 18 2009 at 5:00 PM Rating: Decent
Yeah I looked through there a little bit, but I don't think I can post on those forums on a trial account which is why I came here.

I just figured someone might have had the same issue.
#8 May 18 2009 at 8:55 PM Rating: Decent
Eh, there was a couple threads on the game freezing but I think there issue was a crappy pc. I'm not running anything special but I figure if I can run WoW, CoH, Warhammer and Everquest 2 on default settings I shouldn't have a problem with SWG should I?

The only thing that makes sense to me would be if something went wrong with the game installation. I guess I'll try reinstalling...

Have you done a file scan?

I would do a full scan and if that doesnt work go into the game files and run the file TREFix.exe and see if that helps.

Ya, EQ2 is definetly mo9re demanding than SWG, in some respects anyway, I think SWG might be more ram dependent than graphics card dependent, try what MontyB suggested.

out of curiosity, do you see any items as suqare black blocks with question marks in them?

I had that happen last time I played the trial, I think the trial might be buggier than the game for some reason, so its hard to tell whether this issue is with teh game or with the trial.
#11 May 19 2009 at 10:30 AM Rating: Decent
Don't really know how to do a file scan but I ran the TREFix.exe and it didn't find anything to repair. I played the game again and it ran a lot better for a while but about an hour or so into it it froze up again.

I don't see any black boxes or anything like that. The game looks fine it's just a bit choppy sometimes and like I said freezes up.

Perhaps it is just the trial, which is quite lame actually since a buggy game isn't a good first impression to give potential new players.

on the launcher, where you would normally hit play, there should be a file/full scan button.

I agree 100%, can't really prove the trial is buggier than the game though, but that was my experience after playing the full game and trial several seperate times.

Yeah, it says Scanning and then Launch Game (the scanning part only takes like a second), but I don't see any full scan button.

After you have entered your login and password there is a button at the bottom right of the screen called "full scan".

The other option is to go into the game options window and set everything to the bare minimum and see if the problem remains, then start bringing it up bit at a time to isolate the problem.

Well, I went into preferences and deleted the scan cache or whatever and I guess that forced a full scan. Still can't see any full scan button though, unless you're talking about after the game actually launches and not the station launcher.

I wonder if it could be an issue with the whole router port forwarding thing? I guess it wouldn't hurt to try that but I'd like a little confirmation that that could be an issue before I go tinkering lol.

Nope. I have XP.

I just reinstalled the game and it's still choppy when I start it up. The starting logos fade in and out in "spurts", and when I spin my character around it's very choppy as well. I really don't know what the deal is. It doesn't seem like a router/firewall issue would cause choppiness, but at the same time I don't see how it can be a problem with my PC when I can run more demanding games just fine.

If it's just an issue with the trial client (assuming the trial and actual game clients are different), then that's just bullcrap.

P.S. I still can't for the life of me find the file scan option on the station launcher. The closest I could find was deleting the scan cache or whatever it is.

Don't know what to say, but ya if the intro screens are lagging it doesn't seem likely its a firewall/internet problem.

Hey Azzahn,

Sorry to hear about your issues using the SWG trial via Station Launcher.

The trial client is the same as the full client, but your account will have a few restrictions, so there likely isnt an issue there.

I would advise using that "Delete Scan Cache" button that you found as this is effectively the Station Launcher "Full Scan":

Delete Scan Cache: Whenever you play a game, Station Launcher scans your game files to determine if they need to be updated. The first time Station Launcher does this, it must do a full scan, which can take a while. However, the scan is cached so a full scan is not required every time. Clicking "Delete Scan Cache" will force Station Launcher to do a full scan again. Generally, you'd only do this to help solve problems you may have with the game.

If this does not help, please let me know.

I would also disable all memory resident apps..I.E. Anti-Virus(doesn't play nice with SWG), Anti-Spyware, backup programs(Norton Ghost), Chat Engines, and so on, this should also include e-mail apps.

I did the delete scan cache thing a couple days ago and it didn't seem to help.

Edit: Just tried it again and the game is still choppy on the load up and the character select screen.

Could you please tell me which Graphics Card and Driver version are you running on that PC?

Which version of DirectX do you have installed?

Is it just the music that is choppy or the responsiveness of the client in general?
#25 May 22 2009 at 9:13 AM Rating: Decent
My graphics card is a GeForce 8600 GT driver version is 182.08, and I have Directx 9.0c.

The music is fine, even when the game freezes the sound is still going and I can still move the mouse cursor around. The graphics are what's choppy.

I have had this happened only when my Anti-Virus was running. That may not be your issue.....but you should check that....disable your anti-virus for giggles.
