The materials like Brimstones, are commonly referred to as 'crit mats'. If you have a tier mastered these materials will allow you a better chance to achieve a critical combine on crafted items. You wont be able to use the master tab in the crafting menu until you master the tier. In the master tab there is a checkbox for critical material use and the % increase when using it.
It says EXACTLY what tier and what craft the item is used for in the tooltip when you cursor over it.
Brimstones are used for Metalsmithing (Heavy Armor, Shields, Craft tools). You can find them in Ore nodes if you are a prospector.
For the regular 'mats' you get from Prospecting and Forestry:
Ore nodes: You get chunks of ore that need to be smelted into ingots (prospecting). 2 chunks = 1 Ingot usually. There are other recipes for things like Bronze ingots. You can further refine iron ingots into steel: 1 *-iron Ingot + 1 coal = 1 *-steel ingot.
You will also find gems, dye components, coal and critical materials for Metalsmith, Jewelry and Weaponsmithing in ore nodes. It will list uses in the toopltips.
For Forestry, when you harvest wood nodes you will get peices of *wood. You need to treat the wood (forestry): 2 *wood + wax = finished piece (plank board?) which are used in woodworking recipes. You may also get resins, spider silk, among other things. There should be tooltips explaining which craft uses the items. You will also find crit mats in theses wood nodes for woodworking and tailoring. You cannot harvest wood or treat hides (2 hides = 1 leather) unless you have the Forestry craft. Non-foresters need to buy materials like leather or wood from other players. One thing most people do is have an alt that is an explorer to prospect and harvest wood/treat hides.
