Impressions so far....Follow

I only have a level 13 Templar, however I am interested in people's thoughts about this game. I come from a FFXI and WoW MMORPG background. So far I have to say that AION is a mix of the two, bringing most of the positives and little of the negatives with it.

The UI is very well thought out, and the find function makes questing super easy, that being the route you wish to take. Many posts on the AION forums say that grinding mobs is faster than questing, which I tend to believe, but I like that fact that they put the option to quest rather than grind in the game. FFXI was a grindfest in which you had to be part of a group to make any progress. I have soloed to this point, a la WoW via questing and am really enjoying the game. I hope that I can continue to solo till 25 and then see what the game holds...

There are some group only quests coming up at 18 or so, if your asmodian you probably have seen people asking for them. The quest line is the Black Claws or BC for short. The area these quests are in have elite mobs mixed with some normal mobs, and it is to my knowledge not solo'able. Beyond that though I can't say anything about the quests and solo'ing them. Bludwyng is a bit higher level than myself and he probably could elaborate more.

Aion seems to favor solo and group. From my past experience and seeing how me and the OP share a ffxi background but u do have WOW on me. Be prepared to be ridaculed tanking till you get to 25. I have heard alot of templers as myself struggling pre-25 to hold hate on multiple mobs.

My first impressions. in no particular order starting with dislikes.

Its a new game so expect some or many frustrations at first. I know i have a few.

#1 I was terribly disappointed to discover how very limited flight is in this game. I played WOW for years and love soaring high above the world for unlimited time and break-neck speeds.

Have you ever played Perfect world? the free to play game.. well flight in Aion is much like that. at lvl 10 you get wings and can fly for about 30 seconds and you can only fly in limited areas and not very high at all, and the speed is faster then that in perfect world but still slow.

#2 Don't jump in the water,, you cant swim in Aion, mind you most water isn't deep enough to swim in anyhow.

#3 As to my knowledge there are no mounts in Aion to ride where you cant fly , which is most places.

#4 Lack of starting areas, You get 1 that its for all classes. so rollin an alt can be tedious. also only 2 playable races and you can only choose one per server. I'm sure at some point in the future they may add more, but why make a new game that's behind in the mmo evolution, more on this later.

#5 User interface.. it is ok however when playing my spirit master my pets "taunt" has about a 4in x 4in tool tip box that pops right in the center of my screen and no way to turn it off. The hotbars are not movable at all, what you got is all you get. up to 4 bars i believe.

#6 Lag, lag and more lag. My fps will read 50-60 but in a city its awefull. Remember Vanguard citys, well Aion is just like that, a major slide show.

#7 Broker... its limited, very, you have basic search function but if typing by name its case sensitive and a pain. Don't count on clicking an item in your inventory and getting it in the search box to do a price check. Also you cant buy quantity. the amount listed for sale be it 1 or 1000 that's what you have to buy the whole stack, not just the 5 you need for your quest or item your trying to make.

GOLD SPAMMERS are relentless, plan not to see much chat as they chain spam in every channel and whispers all day and night.

I could list more but ill list some things i like.

Tradeskills,
This I love. No complex unnecessary actions needed here. You go to your trade skill station, have the required items to make your item or do your work order, click create and set back and watch. Awesome,.

Graphics are great, it looks good and i can play on max settings and still play at 35-50 fps.

Character customization is almost limitless, Ive seen some very funny looking avatars, 10 ft tall and thin as a rail with a large oversize head supporting an enormous Afro.

Over all my suggestions for anyone thinking about moving over to Aion, Dont expect the smooth finished playability of current games like WOW or EQ2. Playing Aion will be like the first week of those games. Its very basic.

I just look forward to a day when a new game comes out of the gate with all that the most popular MMO's have plus more.
Make popular mmo's the baseline to create a new game. Give us somthing we have not seen before and think outside the box.

After playing eq2 and wow i feel ive traded in my Humvee for a Chrysler K car.

i forget which but if you Shift or Alt Click on an item, it puts the name of the item exactly as is in the Search Box.

Price Checking is only hard when you have something like Armor Flux, because it will still show you all the Lesser, Minor and Greater Armor Flux items. also if you type G A F, it will show you all items that contains words that start with all those 3 letters.

the other part that sucks is if you try to look for crafting formulas, there doesn't seem to be anyway to sort them by Craft Level.

Flight time was limited because people would just fly over mobs killing everything out of harm’s way; the only way they could do it fairly was to limit Flight.

I've gotten two toons to level 10 and ascension on the Asmo side so far, I plan on doing it on the other on another server as well, just so I can see the differences in the races. I'm pretty happy with it from the bit I've seen. The graphics are definitely cool, I like the cut scenes as well. It is a little choppy on my system, but that may be due to my machine. It's a bit old, and the graphics card is only a GeForce 7600.

The questing is cool, and I like how it takes you through what seems to be the entire n00b area. There does seem to be a lot of wasted space, with some wide open areas for no apparent reason other than to spread things out. It reminds me a bit of EQ in that regard.

I haven't really delved into the community too much thus far. I've run into a few helpful people, but the various chat channels are full of discussion that at times make me want to turn it all off.

I started my first "private store" today to sell off a few green items, and managed to get rid of a few of them. I found that interesting, I imagine the AH will be much more successful in the long run, but haven't played with it yet as I don't have anything of note to sell.

I haven't gotten into tradeskills at all yet. Not sure how to really, I'll have to read up on that. Unfortunately work blocks the gaming sites, so I'd have to spend home time doing that, so I'll likely wait till I break down finally.

Many have made comparisons to FF and WoW, I did play WoW for a while but never FF. Mainly my game was EQ, and I did dabble in LoTR briefly. Aion seems to have more of an EQ feel to it, rather than the other two. WoW and LoTR were both kind of cartoony to me, which made it hard to really get immersed into it. I don't get that with this one, it just feels more intense and "real" for lack of a better word.

Not sure how long it'll keep my interest, but it's pretty cool so far.

Honestly, I quit after a few days. And that was with getting talked into doing pre-selection and headstart for those nifty items and unique title (though, not so unique when there's thousands of other headstart people running around with it).

I found the combat system to be a bit cumbersome. Playing an assassin I found myself very susceptible to death which was very annoying, though I know this is not the case with plate wearing classes.

Also, it was way too linear for my tastes. I had gotten used to WoW's 8 races and very open-ended questing. With Aion it's two races, same exact starting point, same exact quest progression whether you roll 1, 2 or 8 toons. It already felt boring and tedious to me by the time I'd gotten to lv 18.

Flight was advertised as a highly integrated and crucial aspect of gameplay. By lv 18 I found it nearly useless, though I have heard this is quite different in the Abyss. Still, the limitations were annoying and the flight controls were entirely non-intuitive to me.

Even though it was very early into the game's life I encountered small little kinks and glitches that annoyed the everliving **** out of me. Like my mouse icon disappearing if I happened to be holding down the mouse buttons to move while initiating my attack. I would have to click the mouse to make the cursor appear and in so many of the high pressure situations where my squishy assassin was about to die it caused more deaths than I care to remember.

The skillchain system was very cool though. Kudos to them for that, very unique and engaging and a definite plus.

The graphics were OUTSTANDING. Blows WoW and FFXI out of the water, but honestly for me, graphics aren't enough to sell me, I have to have fun while I'm playing it, just just ooohing and aaahing at the sights while I die.

Oh and getting excommunicated by the people I thought were friends and thus kicked out of the legion for telling a guildmate from WoW what server we were on didn't help. Apparently the people I went to Aion with wanted to go in secret and I totally ruined everything for them by telling one single person. Needless to say that sucked what little fun I thought I was having right out of the game. But I'm not bitter, oh no. I would have put up with all the things I found negative if that episode wouldn't have happened.

Given the fact I've only played it for 30 minutes, completed 5 quests, and reached level 3, my opinion is limited, but impressions have been left.

First I'll start off to say the game is brand spanking new, and no MMO has begun and started off working quite well. WoW was horrible, and at times unplayable. It amazes me on the o-boards, seeing people rant and nerdrage over simple issues that will be improved on over time. Just relax people, it'll get better.

Well, so far I am liking it. Was easy to get into, as it plays almost exactly like WoW does, as far as the controls go. Graphics wise, this game makes me glad I upgraded to a high end machine last year, as the scenery is beautiful.

First thing I noticed after character creation, and getting into the game, was the amount of spamming from RMT. Jebus. A few ignores placed, and it got quiet, but every once and a while, a new spammer appeared to receive a new ignore. Even the o-boards are partly plagued. Seems there's next to none moderation happening, in game and out. I am sure they are just a bit busy with their new game, to attend to these simple issues. I am confident it will be corrected, so no biggie. Years of MMO playing has trained me to ignore RMT.

I read about the issues with private stores, and naturally, I haven't been in the game long enough to see this en mass. Saw one set up in the beginning area. I actually kinda like it. I thought it neat to see a toon, sitting, motioning to come check out their wares. Would prefer to have no signage placed over the toon, rather, like FFXI's bazaar system, as others have mention on these boards.
