Hi there, my husband and I recently started playing LOTRO and we are very impressed so far. We are former WoW players and refugees from EQ, so we're familiar with MMO mechanics for the most part, but I'm a little more lost than usual.

One of the big pluses in favor of LOTRO for us was the fact that Alla had a site devoted to it. We've frequented it for many years and I am big on doing research, brushing up on lore and doing my homework. Right now though, I'm having a difficult time finding anything the really explains "stats" and how they work in this game. I like that the spells and stats are pretty unique, but I'm just not sure what I should be focusing on.

We created a bard/warden for duoing, and I'm also soloing a RK. I prefer the caster/healer role, while hubby likes the tank/melee role.

Also, weird thing happens to us on occasion where we are unable to log in. We can get on but when we try to log in a character it just hangs up, and the meter never moves. It has also happened on occasion while zoning. We have very good systems and good video cards, and I've recently updated my drivers (I run on XP) and hubby recently upgrade to Windows 7 from Vista. Does anyone else have this happen and is there any known cause? So far the official boards haven't been overly helpful.

I have to say, though, that this game was very easy to jump into, as opposed to some others we tried that had very clunky UIs and/or combat systems.

Hello and Welcome to Middle Earth!

I think you'll find that pretty much any class can solo well in LOTRO. I'll leave it to others here to recommend specific stats for your characters as I don't play any of those you mentioned as a main. I can tell you that my alt minst seems focused on fate/will and my alt RK seems focused on vit/fate. Although in all fairness, I don;t play either character often or well!

If he enjoys the DPS role, your husband might also enjoy playing either a hunter or a champion. These two classes are both high DPS classes and are both very popular. Hunters lead the field in single target DPS while champs specialize in multi-target DPS. Both are a lot of fun to play! When playing either of these you should focus on agility as a primary stat.

I can't say I've ever heard of the log-in issue you described before. Does this happen on both your machines? Do you share the same internet connection and could it somehow be related to that?

With LOTRO a lot of data is stored server side so it strikes me as possible that the connection may be a bottleneck if/when you are both trying to get on at once. You might try staggering your log ins so that one of you is always in before the other starts to log on.

Since you are fans of Allah, if you are playing on the Meneldor server, you might want to look up TINFS (There Is No Fifth Star). We are the unofficial Allah Kinship and we are located there. We have several couples including the kin leaders and offer a friendly, laid-back atmosphere in which to game with others. You can find us here:

Good luck!

Awesome, thank you!

Yes it happens to both of us. I have a feeling it is our internet connection as well, it's satellite, unfortunately the only thing "high speed" available in our area. It generally happens in the evenings when I assume there's more traffic, but we'll try staggering our log in and see if that works!

There has been an issue with logging in problems recently experienced by some. Not me I'm happy to report, tho' some kinnies (we in Australia/NZ) have mentioned it.

I would reccomend the official forums as a place to research your class and all other info about the game. For 'official forums' they are extremely useful.

I'd be willing to bet that's the problem. Sat internet has to toss huge chunks of data across what is basically a wireless link first between ground and the satellite itself and then again between the sat and ground. This causes a bottleneck in data transmission. Since your uplink is at a much lower rate then your downlink the issue is probably based around calls (data requests) placed by your computers. I'd be interested to know if staggering the log in helps.

Internet can't be fixed, but my DirectX being out of date, so hopefully that resolves it. Official boards were spectacularly unhelpful.
