Dingoo aka Pocket Retro EmulatorFollow

I was curious if anyone had this system. I was looking at this for a gift for someone but it seems that that SNES emulation can be spotty. But a lot of the reviews I came across were from summer, when apparently a new Linux based firmware called Dingux came out a few months ago that allowed the use of other emulators. Or anyone have this or a similar system that they like?

For those who have no idea what I am talking about, ThinkGeek has it here :)

But be aware that it can be found cheaper on other sites. I've seen places that have it for about $80 under the Dingoo name

Thanks in advance

I would grab one just to have it before the C&D order and probable lawsuit from Nintendo, Sega, and whoever has the rights to Neo Geo now.

Pretty sure these are created somewhere in China so it might be a little difficult for them to get shutdown. ThinkGeek might get asked to stop distributing them though.

How do you play Sega Genesis games without the 6 buttons...

I'm also curious about the specs, and the emulators it uses to run. Because all these emulators are available to run on the Nintendo DS, but they do have slight issues.

I can't imagine this thing emulating them perfectly.

- CPS1 and CPS2 (CAPCOM, arcade game systems, 1st and 2nd edition)

I can already do all of these on my PSP (not sure on CPS1&2, but probably).
And I know I can run a few of them for sure on my DS.

So I wouldn't buy one of these. But the idea is cool.

Should work out ok.

Still awkward to play like that.

Sega Genesis controllers had 3 button and 6 button variations. The 6 button control configuration would be no different than playing a game on the SNES (Such as Street Fighter), having to use the shoulder buttons for HP and HK.

It also says you are able to switch configurations around.

I play Sega Genesis games on the PC with a PS2-type controller. It's still awkward if you are used to using the original sega controller.

From what I saw you can reconfigure the button commands. But you are right that it probably will not help you if you are used to going to one location for an action and now you need to use an entirely different button.

As far as Genesis games, I think the built in emulator is not so great but the Linux based one is better. Some games seem to glitch on the sound though, which is true for SNES too.

I wasn't sure what the comparison between that and running a homebrew on a PSP was. I own a PSP but I'd rather not break it trying to figure out how to run the things. But if it is tons better, a used PSP isn't that much more expensive.

Pretty much confirmed everything I had thought was true.

You're better off with a PSP, or even a DS with a flashcart.

Yes I saw that Ashens video and thought it it was pretty funny ^^ However, the button thing has been fixed and you want to run the emulators on Dingux, and not the built in ones. They were available at the time he posted this video, I think, so I'm not sure why it isn't showcased. Unless he just wanted to show the device straight out of the box.

How are emulators on a PSP? I saw a few places mention that the Dinux emulators were better because they did not require some filters that the PSP did to run the older systems. I can't seem to find a side by side comparison with the more recent Linux based emulators and a modded PSP.

I think the Ashens video did mention one of the emulators. Near the end it said he found it, but it didn't show all the sprites on the screen.

Emulators on the PSP are not perfect, but some are very close.

I have only used the GBA emulator for the PSP, and it is about 99%. No slowdowns, and the only problem it ran in to was the opening FMV of Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories. But just skip it and everything else in the game works fine.

The other systems, NES, SNES, Sega, etc. I haven't played them so I don't have any first hand experience.

The GBA emulator for PSP is incredibly good. It runs games on my PSP better than it does on my PC (example: no lag at all in battles playing the Mother 3 fan translation, which my PC can't do).

The SNES and Genesis emulators for PSP are pretty good, too. Like bsphil said, the GBA one is at times better than on PC, which always makes me giggle. The NES one works, but I either can't figure it out or it doesn't, but I can never get it to reset without exiting out fully and restarting it, which is kind of annoying.

There is a SCUMMVM player as well, and the only problem I had with it was the mouse speed and accuracy was kind of hit or miss.

Overall, I enjoy the hell out of emulators on PSP. Smiley: grin
