Just wondering if anybody here owns any of the various Nintendo clones out there? I have the Retro Duo and the music/sound on many games is absolutely terrible. It seems like Konami/Ultra games are the prob the worst. Also A Boy and his Blob is pretty much unplayable the sound is so off in it.

Anyways anybody know if any of the other systems are any better at NES games?

Well Emulators technically are illegal (well downloading the games are). Also you take a chance of getting garbage on your computer with the sites that allow you to download roms.

Biggest reason though is I have over 100 NES games and playing them with a regular controller on a regular TV is more fun.

Fair enough. I personally have never had any issues with malicious software, but I can understand your reasoning. Sorry I can't help you. =(

You can get a real NES on Ebay in good condition for less than $100.

Same. Well except the NES (it was stolen when I was like 5 or 6, and my parents just bought a SNES to replace it).

I'd just get a good emulator, and a TV Output.

Nintendo isn't going to care about you getting their ancient NES games for free. Really they won't.

NES, and the games for the system, (should) have fallen to Public Domain by now (Its been twenty plus years, after all), so it isn't illegal. As far as getting garbage, you're likely to get garbage from just surfing internet sites due to keyloggers hidden in script filled ads, so just downloading roms isn't that dangerous either. No reason for paranoia.

I believe the public domain thing only holds if the company doesn't exist anymore. Nintendo still exists and still owns the games. It even re-releases them as Wii-ware on occasions.

But in all reality, they don't care about NES emulation. They barely do anything about Wii and DS piracy. (Though, they have stepped up on both recently).

I'd rather _not_ spend money on the NES and still enjoy the classics than give a company money for emulating an older system.

Public Domain is only in effect if the owner company fails to renew their copyright/patent for the object/idea. Since Nintendo has failed to do so concerning the NES, people are now free to make as many clone versions of the hardware as they want. Software is a different matter; a lot of the original characters for NES games are still being used by their parent companies, so said companies keep the copyrights for their IPs updated.

And just for the record, there are plenty of safe communities out there to get these Retro systems without fear of viruses or other malware.

You only get to the dangerous side if you use google and search for "FREE ROMS NOW PLZ LOL".

That can't be right, considering the lengths Disney goes to to get public domain laws changed. If their continued existence was enough to keep Mickey in house, they wouldn't spend billions on the endeavor, know what I mean?

Here is the wiki article on Mickey Mouse's legal status. It explains that not only is he copyrighted he is also trademarked, which means that even if Disney lets the copyright expire on him as long as they keep using him as the mascot for the company nobody else can legally use him. Assuming that Disney doesn't ***** with copyright laws again in their favor the earliest he officially becomes public domain is 2023.

Edit: With any luck Disney will go under by then.

In response to the OP, I haven't tried any of those new systems, but I did have an early Yobo system. It seems to have decent compaibility, but my NES library isn't very big and I eventually got a real NES.

You should be able to to find an authentic NES for fairly cheap on eBay. Usually if you buy a used one, the most common thing they might need is a new 72 pin connector, but a lot of sellers seem to replace these before selling as an incentive to buy from them. This should help with the old "game won't load and constantly resets" problem, but I've heard the reason the connectors get loose in the first place is Game Genie use. I'm not sure if that's true or not though.

I hope this post helps you out.

The regular nes systems even when they were new were a pain in the butt. I finally broke down and got a official top loader nes. From what research I did the clone I got now is prob the best one and it is far from perfect.

As I recall, as hard as it was to get the blob to do what you wanted, the game was nigh unplayable to begin with.

There's the NES emulator for the Dreamcast. Loved it.

There are a few. They aren't perfect, but they work well enough. Chankast and NullDC are the best.

Like all higher system emulators, you need the RAM, CPU, and Graphics power to do it.

I actually find it harder to find Dreamcast games that I actually want to play...
