I wouldn't count on playing past the regenerated Borg scout ship mission in beta. The next mission is on the planet Vega, and there are so many people there you will probably be kicked off the server immediately.

Edit: Learned something, press M to open the map, then select "Change Instance" to move to a less crowded zone.

Unless I read it wrong, it can be used for Open Beta.

Last night I made it thru the Borg and completed the Orian Pirate mission.

I may of had a nerdgasam last night. Even tho its very early in beta and there are bugs to be worked out, I haven't had this much fun since the early days of EQ.

I'm not sure I'm going to need to change my underwear as often as you, but this sounds promising.

How is the gameplay itself? Also, what's the interaction like with other players?

For me it was 10 minutes of "When do we get lightsabers?" and "We get lightsabers in here!?!", followed by "Who took all the goddamn phaser rifles!?!". Then another half hour of finding lag free instances to finish the quests without getting kicked off the server.

I haven't grouped up as of yet. I logged off after a couple of hours and several bugs that kept me locked in 1 system for a wile.

Interactions so far seem typical of any MMO. I only noticed them in the tutorial when you have to take out a Borg cube. There were a lot of small groups then.

I havent seen a Plat spammer yet but some clown was spamming hit internet radio site a lot.

Game play is pretty good. Away missions are FPSish, but, at this point anyway, its more of a click on your target then click the type of shot you use. AI wasen't ipressive, but its still early beta.

Ship combat took me a little bit to catch on to....its slow but you have to work at it...keeping you full sheilds to the enemy and trying to wear their sheilds down was a lot of fun.

DESUFleet is up and running. Look for Shaowstrike@Shaowstrike online for an invite. Also Iamadam@Iamadam can invite you as well, if he has figured out how to do it yet.

I don't have a key, but epic. Anyone from this site + guilds together usually = good times.

I was very impressed in the difference in between the last 2 nights. Server stability was much improved and a lot of the little bugs I was seeing were gone.

I had the time to run 2 missions last night. The first one I joined my first group to patrol the Vulcan sector. It was made up of several different missions in different systems and there was a good variety in them from ground to space. The battles with my group of 5 and the the waves of bad guys was a blast. You really had to keep thinking as wile you were working on 1 ship 2-6 other were targeting you.

The second mission was escorting a Vulcan Ambassador to his destination and the entire run of space combat and the running fight on the planed was a blast. I really had the feel of being in a episode on TV.

I like the space battles, I just can't figure out how to handle the ground battles. Is there a concept of a tank? If so, how do I make sure that he goes in first?

FYI, just me asking this tells me that it's too much effort for me to learn. Since it's Star Trek I'll give it a chance but may end up quitting unless they can fix this mechanic.

Get a Tactical NPC with the Draw Fire ability, that's your tank.

My WoW account time is due to expire on the 24th. By birthday is the 20th. I can either ask for game time for STO or WoW...

This decision is TOO HARD TO MAKE.

Good rule of thumb, never play an MMO when its released.

So, I beamed down to Vega(?) and my away team was supposed to have me and my first in command, but it was just me. Everyone around me was paired up, but my guy wasn't with me Smiley: frown

I couldn't find any way to get him down there with me either.

Log out/in or change instances and your AWAY team should appear.

If you want into the DESUFleet guild post your character and login name like so: character@login. I'll look for you when I'm online and send you an invite.

Played through the intro mission for an hour, then I realized the game wasn't for me and quit. I hope my friend enjoys the beta account.

I want to clarify I don't believe STO is necessarily a bad game, but it definitely wasn't wha tI was expecting and definitely what I wanted. Whether that is because the concept was executed poorly or because I wasn't the demographic the game was built for, I don't know.

1. Aesthetics. Admittedly there isn't much that could be done here, because at least half the game takes place in space. Space is bland. You can dress up a little with some asteroids, a space station, and maybe even some nebula gas, but really it's just a bunch of nothing and makes for a very uninteresting environment. I've also not been very big on realistic (or even somewhat realistic) scifi settings. Also the art in Star Trek was never very good, what made the scenery good was the drama. A borg cube exploding looked good in Voyager because it was a very dramatic moment. That drama is removed when I go out to farm borg cubes.

2. Sluggishness. Another problem somewhat tied to space and also the desire to make turning radius a functional inmportant part of the game (which makes sense). I can see my targets long before I get to them, since there aren't many obstacles, and reaching them tends to simply be a matter of time. I remember playing through the intro and going after a borg probe that was 20 km away, I waited maybe 3 minutes to catch up to it. I thought to myself that line from the Simpson when Bart and Homer drive away in a parade float, skinner "They're very slowly getting away!"

3. Combat. While a style where movement and position are very important is a more novel approach, it doesn't seem to play out well. The most effective strategy so far has always been to circle the enemy so I can fire both fore and aft phasers, then when their shields are down turning in for photons. This gets tiring to repeat in every single fight, and there not really anything more effective to do.

1) Have to agree on that, but you have to remember that they aren't the true Borg. Something happened to them that killed their hive mind and co-ordination, which makes them a hell of a lot easier to kill.

2) That was your own fault, sort of. If you click at the top of the speed bar while not in combat it pushes you to "Full Impulse", which will get you to you target within a few seconds.

3)You've only did 1 on 1 or 2 on 1 fights. Very early in the game you will be fighting 5-7 on 1 fights and you learn very quickly to rotate your ship to present fresh shields, or forming a fleet of 5-6 nearby players on the fly to take on an enemy fleet of 20 ships.

Got my Beta key last night, set my computer to download while I was at work today from the Zam site, got home today and it failed at some stage, by looking at my usage meter it must of got pretty close to finished when it failed. Second try, download from Star Trek site using a Aus Gamer Server, think they are Australian so decided to use them, at about 70% download, same problem, do I try again or give up, looking at where downloads are saved I have 2 different part files, one from this morning 4.5 gig and the other 5 gig.

Use the bittorrent file if you are having connection issues. You can easily resume, etc.
