Do I need a subscription to post in the official SWG forums?

Yes, unless your on a trial then you might be able to post in tech an new player forum.

The forums seem locked to trial players. That, imo, is beyond stupid. I guess SOE don't want to help people until they decide to pony up for a month at least. I don't understand that; as a prospective player i've got nowhere to officially ask help. Poor thinking. It's not as if the game tutorials and explanations are always particularly clear either.

its to stop people spamming the forums with hate mail etc, bit of a holdover from the nge roll out... won't go into detail that would take far too long.. but.. its like that for a good reason anyway.

why would anyone, 7 years on, sign up for a free trial for a game that changed years ago, just to send hate mail? That's a bit paranoid, even for the interweb!

It happened, and the jackasses ruined it for all trial players, originally trial accounts werent limited at all, then they were limited to the 2 i mentioned, now i guess they dont get anything.

Is there anywhere I can go to ask questions and actually get answers, because so far I'm getting nowhere - including here. SOE really don't seem to want people playing the game it feels like.

How does the players of the game ruining the forums for trial accounts mean they dont want you playing? blame all the butthurt old players.

It means they don't want to facilitate new players and potential new players and give them a place to ask questions. I blame SOE for that since it's their decision in how they react to other people and their actions. A blanket ban on all new accounts is a huge and clumsy overreaction.

I agree, I have been impressed with SWGs in game support but I find their new player management poorly thought out and badly implemented.

I can not see why they can't allow trial accounts access to the new player forums and just moderate the forum more heavily than other forums to prevent "old issues" flooding the place.

As far as the manual for the game goes I have seen it available somewhere online but I can't remember where, it may have been on Steam.

EDIT: I have just logged into Steam and gone to the "Massively Multiplayer" section, selected Star Wars Galaxies and the manual is there to be downloaded in pdf form.
