I've seen people running around town with a NPC following them around, called Ally of so-and-so. How do you go about getting one of those?
I think you're talking about a Captain's pet, the herald. They resemble npcs. You can also get your own "pet soldier" by participating in the skirmish system, but the only downside is that you can only use it in a skirmish.
