Free to play?Follow

So Turbine announced the game is going "free to play" in the same model as DDO.

How do you think this affects us all and how specifically do you think it will affect lifetime subscription holders?

We better get craptons of credits for all that premium sh*t. If I wasted $200, I am gonna be pissed.

Eh, who I am I kidding. It was a waste from the start. I played for, like, a month and then went back to WoW.

Did you read the Loyalty Rewards announcement? I believe lifetime/founders will receive 5,000 TP (Turbine Points) at release, and 500 a month as well as have VIP status. (Which grants access to all content and priority login) So...pretty much the only thing changing for lifetime accounts/founders/subscribers is that we get 500 points to spend a month on fluff in the store.

I have two problems:

1. Ruined community
2. No content for 8+ months. WTF.

As far as it ruining the community, I can see your point but;
A) the community is already pretty diluted and whiney! It isn't the same community as it was in closed beta or even in the first year or two of the live game.
B) the children who decend upon us in hopes of a BIG free experience are likely to drift away when they discover that the game is far more complex then whatever browser game they were playing for free before they jumped in. Whether or not there is a monthly subscription fee, the game requires commitment and kids who can't commit financially probably don't wanna commit emotionally either!

As far as no content for 8 months... I feel your pain!

I'm keeping my powder dry on this one. Could go either way, and I wouldn't like to call it just yet.

Community: The most vocal ones are crying about new content and have been since Mirkwood was released. Now that they have to wait until Fall for anything new, they cry even louder and longer. I do not think this represents most of the players, and quite frankly I am fed up with these individuals. You know they will be crying again 3 weeks after F2P launches about lack of new content.

Rewards: Loyalty rewards kick in only IF you log into your character at least once a month, so do not come back in fall expecting lots of Points to spend in the store.

I have not tried DDO so I do not have any data to conclude what I think may happen. From what I read, having a lifetime account will change nothing for me, in fact, I may be able to obtain future expansion packs for FREE ($50 for Moria, $20 for Mirkwood is what I have spent for expansions so far). If that is the case, the only thing that may hamper play is all the newbies, but we had the same thing when the game launched, and when each expansion was released so I do not see hardship looming.

My attitude is: Meh, I am already playing with the house's money, no big deal if it crashes and burns. I would like to see it last until Gondor and Mordor (and maybe an epilogue back to the Shire).
