The Justice League rules over Earth in the DC universe. Any thought otherwise gets you a one way trip into a DC re-education camp.

I was just kinda hoping Hal Jordan was too busy being the Gay Rainbow Lantern to ask for ten Rat Tails. Smiley: oyvey

That's not really the case though. You're not doing quest for the hero but with the hero.
More like sgt. X tells you that villain Z and his tugs have taken over a part of the city and that hero Y needs help with this. You go there, beat the tugs, find hero Y and kick villain Z's *** with him.

Not sure if I'm explaining this well but the set-up is a lot better than just Superman asking you the kill 5 boars for no apparent reason. So far I'm really liking the game and I've never been a big comic book fans.

That's pretty much the one thing keeping me away. Just how ingrained are the actual DC Characters in the storylines and quests? I could probably stomach it if I wasn't running into Superman and Wonder Woman every ten minutes.

Of course, if Marvel ever got off their *** and made their own MMO, I'd be all over that. Maybe even Image.

I don't collect comic books anymore (ok for a really long time), but I used to be pretty much exclusively into Marvel. At the time (mid 80s to mid 90s) they were just vastly better in terms of characters, storyline, and general world cohesion. By contrast, DC was a pretty muddled mess.

Of course, every once in awhile one of my family members would get me something comic book related for a birthday or christmas gift. You know, a book with tons of info about super heroes, or designs and artwork, whatever. Every single damn time, it was DC stuff.

So I've got a ton of source stuff about DC heroes, costume design, power descriptions, histories, etc. Still not inspiring me to play though.

While it was highly delusional on my part to even entertain the idea it would be otherwise, I still feel pretty upset over it. In the sense that its a silly reason not to play a game.

Really, I just can't stand Superman or his power set in general.

After you beat certain arcs (Thus far I've beaten Scarecrow, Bane, Joker, Harley Quinn, Teen Titans, Giganta/Wonder Girl, Some Bee Chick, & Dr. Psyco) you're given motion-comic-esque cut scenes with art by Jim Lee &, generally, very good quality voice acting (Most of the people from WB animation who've done Superman/Batman/Joker/Luther et. al are all doing voices in DCU).

Jim Lee's art can make even throw away villians like Dr. Psyco somewhat cool.

I was just kidding, though the premise is still ridiculous (and par for the course) for MMOs. You're still doing menial labor for a ridiculous reason. I mean, why would the police ask you to help Superman fight thugs? Which is what I don't like about the DC Universe itself.

Between Superman and Flash, the world doesn't really need anyone else. Nevermind the fact that Supes' power set is shared by like half a dozen people, and Flash's power set pretty much translates to God Mode, and you're left with very little reason for any other heroes for Earth. Okay, now say you throw in threats from outside the world, and you have teams of Lanterns who's power sets aren't too different from Supes' ... Hell, even the one hero who should be "human" is capable of defeating both Superman and Flash. Batman's only real power is that he's rich beyond belief and he's moderately smart. Oh, and the whole franchise of Batpeople. Its a freakin' army last I checked.

Now, granted I don't follow DC so there might be a more robust Street Level then I'm lead to believe, but when you've got characters who's powers include the ability to be at any crime anywhere in the world before the crime's conclusion ... why bother trying to be a hometown hero? Like I said, I don't follow DC so I'm probably missing something. I'm not saying Marvel is perfect. Between Clone Saga, One More Day, Chaos War, Shadowland, and the 14 Avengers teams I'm ready to quit comic books again, but I still find the occasional enjoyment between "the big stories."

Oh, and Wolverine. I've never been able to stand him. Or his Wolverclones.

Tell me its Mark Hamill and I'll forget my dislike of the DCU. Best Joker Ever.

Superman asks you to do fight the menial thugs, then shows up & helps you take down the boss.

Although, to be fair, the only time Supes has shown up for me was at the end of the tutorial. He's talked to me via the watchtower a couple of times, but I largely ignored him. Batman's my mentor.

I'm sold; Time to do some power set research and see if I can piece together something I'd enjoy. You're welcome to guess who my mentor is going to be. Whatever that means.

Credit where credit is due; DC made some fantastic cartoons, and Hamill was a fantastic Joker.

Edit: So I'm looking at the DCUO Source Build Calculator, and nothing jumps out. I wanted to create a fast, agile fighter type. Honestly, if I ignore most of the actual Power (Fire, Ice, Gadget, etc), and focus more on Iconic Powers, I get close to what I'm looking for, but then I look through the skill trees and it becomes muddled again. Not sure how it works to be certain. Do you have to have a specific weapon type to use the skill tree, or can you mix and match? Like Martial Arts and Brawler, I would think would work simultaneously.

And yes, I'm working on a Spider-Man power set. Deadpool is a little easier.

You could spread your points into different weapon tree but you can only use the skill if you have the weapon type equipped. So you can't use martial arts simultaneously with brawler since they use different weapon and you'll only get access to the combos related to your equipped weapon.

I played in the beta. I liked it ok. I even got used to the UI and weird targeting system. Flying was a blast, acrobatics was fun too. For a while the husband and I thought about buying it. But in the end I'm more of a fantasy gamer and he just decided he wouldn't play it enough to justify buying it. But it's not a bad game. Maybe one day I'll give it another shot.

I'm on Zero Hour server, PvE.

There is a dude who made the hulk on our server, but i think its named Isaac Smash or something. I'm a telepathic dude with pistols who can shazam named MightyMightyBosstone.

You should be Deadpoolish so we can shoot each other.

Yes, he was part of my list of things I don't like about Marvel.

Tempting. Need to figure out how to incorporate a healing factor and psychosis based telepathy immunity, and I could probably swing that.

Whoops. Missed your switch.

I'm waiting for a comics-based MMORPG worked around Archie, myself. Or maybe Richie Rich.

I'd really love to give this game a chance, but I'm wary to fork out $50 without trying it first.
So, if anyone has a spare key, I will retribute, somehow, in the future.
You can PM me or email me at littleko(at)live(dot)com
Thanks in advance!

Beta is over. The game is out now. Maybe in a few months they'll offer a trial, but I think the only way you could play now is to actually buy it.

The more I am looking at this game, the more I realize why they "originaly" announced it as a f2p game(for those of you who didnt know this, it was supposed to be a f2p game originaly)

kinda sucks they changed it, i woulda given it a try if they left it as f2p, and im the type who does dump money into those type of games

Played City of Heroes and Champions Online - both fun but didn't hold my interest for long (even though I do have the lifetime thing for CO). While currently getting my fantasy fix with LOTRO (again lifetime thing), I picked up DCUO for the pc. While the UI isn't perfect, I've been having a blast playing both heroes and villains. I enjoyed Marvel more than DC as a kid, but DC comics have become more interesting to me. It helps to be a fan of the various animated series, too.

Graphically, DCUO is beautiful and the art style quite immersive, like WoW's. The gameplay is just great fun. I've made 2 heroes and a villain so far (all below level 10). Sure, some things are done better in CoH and CO. Still, I dig the DC material so it's all good so far.

I don't know how long I'll stick with it but I do know it's fun enough that i lose track of time on work nights - good for enjoying the game, bad for not getting enough sleep. Like any decent MMO, there will be fixes for the worst problems at some point.
