FFXI on PS3? Need help please.Follow

#1 Jan 28 2011 at 11:30 PM Rating: Decent
Hey guys, I've played FFXI for about 7+ years and I stopped playing due to work and moving into a new home. Now that I'm all settled I come to find out blah blah PS2 no longer works for XI because of updates or some crap. Well I want a ps3 anyways but I hear you can't play XI on some ps3 models, different sites and forums say MANY different things. So to all the ps3 users or just knowledgeable people, can I fuggin' play ffxi on the ps3? And what model of the system should I buy? Thanks in advance!

Not sure if they have the game on the PSN store for download. If not the only way you could play it is with a backwards compatible PS3, either a first gen with the hardware emulator, or a second gen with the software one. In either case you would need to also download that PS2 compatibility program from the PSN store.

Hm, so downloading that would allow me to play ps2 games, I actually still have my old ps2 discs, ALL of them lol. But obviously those codes are expired, would I still be able to download playonline to my ps3 with those dics?

Yeah, the codes are for the initial creation of the POL account and registering of the game. If you can remember your POL ID and password you can log straight in after installing and updating the game.

Awesome, thanks so much. Also I found the HDD program from PSN for the ps3, but I couldn't find the one for backwards compatibility, do you remember the name of it?

Is your PS3 backwards compatible to start with? I believe the easiest way to tell is still the number of USB ports. 2 = No PS2 Compatibility. 4 = PS2 Compatibility. And the new Slim Models = No.

Obviously the number of USB ports has nothing to do with actual compatibility, but is just a distinct feature on the PS3s with Hardware/Software PS2 emulation built into them.

iirc it was the 40 and 60 GB PS3 that could read ps2 disk.

I know for sure the 60GB one can as my bro hunted around until he found one.
Mine is the 80GB one and it can not t.t

If you have a decent comp, you could always play in it. You can buy the FFXI DVD for like..cheap..and it comes with all the expansions.

Come on, its a 7 year old game, and it didn't exactly push the computers of that era all that hard to begin with.

True.
I remember when I started FFXI, my '04 Dell computer was just under minimum spec according to the box to play.
That box was full of lies as I played WoW on that same computer up to about 4 months ago when I bought an Asus G73.

I think I went through 6 fat old ps2s to play FFXI. When one would break, I'd go out and buy older/slightly used one for parts just to keep the one that had "latched" to the HDD alive Smiley: glare
