Or, you know, just make a video with boobs.

Followers are more trouble than they're worth, IMO.

Though I hear tell there's a Dogmeat equivalent out there somewhere. I'd be down for that.

Very much disagree. Only time I dislike them is when they block doorways. My dog and companion made a lot of tough battle trivial.

They also made me redo some battles, as I didn't want them to die Smiley: grin

They become less useful as you get stronger, but at low levels they could take on things I could hardly touch (bears, tigers...). Even at high levels I like a companion for carrying my stuff.

I don't often use followers because they steal my kills... I feel like I cannot level up my combat skills or be stealthy when Lydia or someone else goes charging in and murdering everything/setting off every trap/getting herself killed.

I'll admit earlier though she saved my *** quite a few times when I was weak and unskilled from monsters like saber cats and frost trolls. Though these days I could kill frost trolls naked at level 1 simply having learned to dodge their attack pattern. I use them as training partners because of their ability to constantly regenerate health.

Lydia keeps my magic-using *** from getting wtfpwnt so I can't complain there. She just needs to change her attitude.

"Oh, God, now what do you want me to carry...?"
"Ummm... here's the three elven arrows back that you saw fit to launch at a passing mud crab..."

Followers get in the damn way when you're trying to snipe bad guys. And to note, so do the damn horses.

I'd rather greedily hoard all the skill ups for myself, and their shaky-at-best AI and hallway-blocking tendencies are enough for me to not bother. Even at low levels with poor defense, trolls and tigers no longer give me much trouble because of my foolproof "run to nearest rocky outcrop and stand on something they can't reach" technique.

I can see using 'em as pack mules, and I do it from time to time, but I never really find myself in situations where I'm carrying so much good stuff that I have to drop something important.

Despite all that, I'd bring one along if they were good company, but they're just so lifeless. Meh.

I do agree with that. I almost wish they were more like (dare I say it?) the companions in SWTOR. While not amazingly lifelike, they at least have more than three lines, make witty lines during quests, and have some personal quests.

Ideally, they'd have the same kind of interaction that you get from the companions in Dragon Age. God, can you imagine running around Skyrim with Morrigan? Oh man, someone mod her into the game right now!

Really? I'm ALWAYS in that position. Then you have to calculate gold to weight ratios to decide what to drop...

Followers are ESPECIALLY nice when you go dragon hunting. Scales and bones are really heavy, and to spawn dragons you need to run around in the wild. Much easier to just have them hold it all than for you to quick travel back to your house or a merchant and then back.

Melee followers, when you are a melee character, can be really annoying. Primarily because I always end up killing them. But Melee followers are nice if you are ranged. Ranged are nice if you are melee.

Honestly, I have yet to figure out how to use a follower well if I have magic. Too often they get hit and die, or friendly fire kills them. I'm thinking the only good option is a second ranged (mage or archer).

My bag used to always be packed, then a few things happened:

1. Picked up the heavy armor conditioning perk, so all that heavy armor that I wore... no longer weighed anything.
2. I realized that almost anything I craft will net me more gold than some random orc axe of blaze.

Also, I stopped picking up dragon bones because I already have 3000 of each of them.

My issue is that you need two worthless (mostly worthless) perks to get the conditioning perk. Seems a waste.

I've only bothered with Lydia so far (since she was thrust upon me) but I've found sometimes the best answer is to stand behind her and just pour some Healing Hands on the girl. Tank/Cleric is a classic combo for a reason.

But I'm not worried about kill-stealing. I fight enough open battles where I have plenty of room to avoid Firebolt'ing Lydia in the back of the head that I don't begrudge changing tactics for tight locations.

Also, my life is better since I said "***** you" to cooking and stopped picking up every stray potato and cabbage I found stored in a barrel at the bottom of some long abandoned ruin Smiley: rolleyes

Too true, but unfortunately I have such a hard time justifying even using full heavy armor without it. For this very reason, my "thought out" character will probably be using light armor almost exclusively and the difference made up with magic. Plus, with the exception of Ebony Mail, there really are not many unique heavy armor pieces or sets. Since I'm aiming for a build that will allow me to take on any roll (mage, warrior, thief, etc.), I've budgeted enough points to allow for me to pick the perk up again, but those will be the last ones I spend most likely.

I started out that way, but now that I'm aware of how stupidly easy it can be to make gold in the game, I find I can get by carrying less than I used to. My thief has something absurd like 420 carrying capacity, and my mage doesn't have much use for 99% of the things he could loot.

My warrior does have that archer elf from Riverwood tagging along with him for kicks, but I don't really use him as a mule.

But I don't fight many dragons, because I don't use many shouts, and I've yet to get a character to the top levels of smithing. So I'm not really burdened with excess dragon bones/scales. My thief is my highest level character, and I beat the game with him at level 26 or so. So there just hasn't been much that's needed collecting for me.

I had just come off Oblivion where all the fruits & veggies were used in alchemy.

Well, the stew and fondue aren't bad for some magicka/stamina boosting and regen. Plus the ingredients are fairly common and you can make it without any skill in alchemy.

Once you have alchemy (or even a modest player level) you'll have stronger potions, of course.

Edit: There are some mods that make cooking a lot more attractive; I found this one and I'm tempted to use it.

Also, this:

Has anyone invested and used alchemy? That's one of the few skills that I never really cared to touch since potions seem like a hassle, but I'm curious if it offers anything unique outside of boosting enchanting and smithing.

I haven't spent any perks on it or anything but I create some potions when I'm between dungeons/quests. The health/magicka ones are of obvious use and melee-centric ones that I don't need I either sell or pass to Lydia. I haven't kept track of how often she uses them, aside from the tell-tale golden swirls of healing potions. Now that I type it, I need to look into that and see if she uses +Stamina potions and stuff.

Otherwise it's +Enchantment, +Lockpick and the occasional +Destruction.

Speaking of, I like lock picking so much more than in Oblivion. I hated Oblivion's so much I'd just spam Auto to see what was inside and then reload. If it was worth it, I'd keep spamming Auto and reloading until I opened it with just a couple picks. At least that went a lot faster after I made a Fortify Lockpicking +100 spell.

Honestly, I don't quite understand why I should use Heavy Armor in the first place. Using Light Armor will still get me max damage reduction, but it'll increase my stamina regen, takes fewer perks to max out, and actually (technically) gives stronger defenses than heavy armor since I have a chance to just cancel out attacks against me (so 80% damage reduction that both armors can get is supplemented by a 10% chance for 0 damage).

There's the aesthetic factor, of course, but I don't really like the dark look of the high-level heavy armors.

I've gotta say, the whole Steam Workshop mod thing is pretty awesome. It's really nice having my mods auto-update, and install with just a click.

Edit: And I've got the Space Core sitting on a table in my house. ಠ_ಠ
