You can recharge an item even if it's not empty- to recharge, you need to select the item then the gem, not the gem then the item. This is opposite of Oblivion and confused me at first.

nope, i didn't get that one either. i'm really **** about peeking in every corner before moving to the next room. i think there was one room or hallway i missed, but at the time i didn't feel like going halfway back through to find it. there might have been a lock you didn't pick or something?
I've been all over that fracking dungeon. Even found this hidden room that required the swift shout to reach for jumping gaps... but still haven't cleared it! One of the Skyrim wikis mentions a strange mask, so maybe I need to find that too? Smiley: mad

my speech skill is at 56, 1h is at 30, and that's about it yet ha ha ha. i have to hit at least two towns now to empty my bags, i'm cleaning out these vendors (though i don't pick up anything under 8g/lb unless i'm headed straight to a vendor.) the 'sell anything to anybody' perk is pretty nice.

If you want to do it quick, exit the shop, use "T" to wait for 24 hours, then another 24, and step back in. 2 days is pretty much enough to refill any shop's gold supply.

I can... it seems like you might waste charging power if you have too much filled? The smallest level of soul gem refills exactly half the charges on my Axe of Cold. The next level up completely fills it.

I have no idea but doubtful. You really don't need it anyway.

It would be like using a fireball to squish one regular skeeter. :D

Keep in mind that you can get a perk to triple that damage under Sneak.

I'm starting to wonder how viable a melee stealth character would be, though. Seems to me like most enemies are grouped and tend to really hang out far from the shadows.

From my experience with Sneak, As long as you can avoid LOS and go down the backstab side, it SHOULD work very well if you can kill them in one or two swings. Even in a well lit place, they have to be staring at you for a second in order for "DETECTED" to go off most of the time, and they won't do that immediately if you get out of the way of the source of the disturbance (i.e. where you killed the thing). You're still in serious trouble if the eye is open all the way however, because that usually means they're looking/moving right at you or in the right direction. You can move pretty fast in Sneak though.

You WILL want to make an awesome dagger, BTW.

Yeah, I told the girl, thinking that there'd be an option to just have her stay clear of both, but no such luck.

Mmm, me too. I still can't get closer than about 10' away from them before they notice me, even if their backs are turned. At what point is it possible to stealth your way right up to an NPC's back unnoticed? I want to do the whole "slit the throat" thing like in the trailers, but no such luck yet.

What gear are you wearing? Boots, armor, and movement speed make a big difference in detection unless you have the appropriate perks.

I think it was around 50 Sneak that I started noticing this from when I'm mowing down Draugr. They would start charging my position but "DETECTED" wouldn't go off immediately anymore. It may have been my perk helping too...

Oops, never took that into account...

Robes of xxxxxxx/Archmage Robes, Circlets, and Light armor types (Elven, Glass) here.

I forget which one, but either the Thieves Guild or Dark Brotherhood will give you default gear that can help as well.

Yeah I'm wearing Elven boots and gauntlets + leather body armor and an imperial helmet, IIRC. Imma have to track down this thieves guild, methinks. Plus, what I'm wearing doesn't look particularly cool or assassin-y. Looks more like an MMORPG starter set as far as I'm concerned.

But my sneak is probably just around 35-ish right now, so maybe I've still got a bit to go. I really should make a more concentrated effort in that area, considering how much I like using it.

I've heard that there are a couple tricks to powerlevel sneak quickly. One is in the tutorial zone, where you can sneak attack your companion; the other is in the Dragonreach dungeons, where after 10PM you can sneak around the guards. I think either way takes maybe an hour or so to max it.

I literally ran around with Sneak for the first 15 hours of the game. It really doesn't drop your speed much, and is only a problem when you're trying to keep up with a runner. Running allies I had to unsneak...running enemies just get charbroiled to a crisp, since you can cast spells on the run. You get detected very quickly if you do, but if they're running it really doesn't matter. =X

Thieves Guild starter -- go to the SE town. (Riften I think.)
Assassin's Guild (Dark Brotherhood) starter -- Not sure how I got it, but got a marker for a house in Windhelm(?) (The rebel town!). Break into the house and accept an assassination quest from the NPC inside. You have to go to Riften to accomplish your request so two birds, one stone. After you complete the quest, you MUST rest to trigger a...meeting. You may have to wait for news about your quest to circulate around first though.

I can pull effects of both sets (you get 4 items for each Guild) for you when I get home if no one else has beforehand. Oh, and you CAN improve the Thieves Guild armor at least.

I seriously need to turn auto-save back on. My memory for saving is just atrocious without save points. I've lost way too much play time...

I still can't decide which direction I want to take my character, though. He's a nord, so I'm thinking a focus on melee. I just don't know how much I'd like to dabble in stealth and magic. Will probably be joining the companions though I don't think I want to become a werewolf.

I figure I'll leave the college and the thieves' guild for another play-through.

So that means Heavy Armor, One-Handed and a Shield, I suppose.

I want my Orc to be generally heavy armor and sword & board, but I find myself sneaking everywhere and arrowing everything I can, so I'll probably put points into Heavy Armor and Bow and then focus on One Hand and Block after the fact. I'm only level three (for the fourth time ...), so I figure I've got some time to really think about it. I figure I can use the Orc's racial to compensate on bosses for the time being.

My biggest issue is that Assassins Creed and UMvC3 has a midnight release tonight, and I can guarantee I'll play those a lot the next few days and then slide back into Skyrim.

Are you worried about leveling too quickly from having extra points accumulating so fast, or just for RP purposes?

I'd say I do melee stealth kills about 15% of the time. I have done the slit-the-throat thing several times, though I don't know when it triggers vs just killing the person. At this point in stealth (level 50-60) as long as someone isn't looking directly at me within 5-10 feet I'm ok. I haven't tried it in dungeons as much, but in camps and in a couple homes I've managed to pick off just about everyone one by one, even in melee. Still not sure if I do it enough to warrant the 15x dagger backstab talent though, even wearing the DB gloves that double backstab damage.

Thanks all for the info.

I'm loathe to power or grind levels, so I'll just be raising sneak more-or-less the old fashioned way. I'll head over to Riften tonight and see about the thieves guild.

This reminds me:

The best way to make things easier in the long run is to hike to each of the main cities and visit locations along the way. The sooner you do this, the better.

Save every 5 minutes. :D

If you can't deal with something along the way, dodge it or reload and avoid that area. If you see a location pop up on your compass while traveling and you haven't been there before (i.e. it is just an outline and not filled in), go to it if it is in approximately the same direction.

Doing this saved me a HUGE amount of play time getting to a location. Of course, in-game time is a completely different story. Smiley: lol

Simple question.

Once you deplete an enchanted item, you can continue to use it w/o the enchant correct?

Yup. Just every time you swing it you'll get a message saying that it's depleted.

I think that warning message also tells you how to refill as well. I remember getting told how to with a quest item, The Staff of Magnus.

Yeah I only refill my main sword for tough spots or bosses. Damn thing goes through juice so fast otherwise.
