That argument makes no sense to me. Open betas are incredibly common with MMOs nowadays. Why would FFXIV be any different?

SE has every possible reason to want as many people buying this game as possible. The real money is in subscription fees. The only way to get subscription fees is to sell the game to people in the first place.

FFXIV:ARR has a lot more to prove than most MMOs. Requiring people pay for their first month on top of the purchase price is just absurd.

I think I played FFXI for 4 years before I ever saw a commercial for it.

You know what I was thinking of? Expansions. The WoW Battle Chest does in fact come with 30 days time, but new expansions do not come with a time card. For some reason I was thinking it didn't come with any time at all and was trying to figure out how that works. I agree that a subscription-based MMO should be coming with a month of game time with the initial purchase.

XI had commercials, not many, but they were there. XIV also had commercials, but mostly of cutscene footage. They didn't last long.

It would behoove SE to actually try to advertise in the west. Maybe not in the sense WoW paid celebrities to pretend to play or Rift's "We're not in Azeroth anymore!" campaign, but certainly more than some music and some cutscenes. Not everyone is going to know or care about 1.0. Not everyone trolls gaming sites, knowing what releases when or even how it's been reviewed. The hardcore element of MMOs may hate the casual base, but they're required. And it's hard to argue that the more money SE gets from the game, the more they can do with it. Of course, I'm forever worried about money XIV makes going back into XIV first, as XI suffered because it didn't.

Neat. I'll probably spend an inordinate amount of time in character creation, trying to figure out wtf I want to be.

They will be debuting the Duty Finder system. How that goes determines when the end of the Beta is.

I just watched the video on the beta forums about the Duty Finder, the stupid name aside, it seems like a hell of well thought out way to get parties together. We'll have to see if it works out the way the make it seem though.

Well, they are apparently successfully stress testing the servers with this Duty Finder.

Not but barely an hour into the Beta test, and all world servers are down and the forum servers are clogged up to the point where it takes almost two minutes to load the forum pages.

Just after I posted that, everything came back up.

The Duty finder looks like it was well thought out. Not just four random people, it tries to create a balanced part. One tank, One healer, Two damage dealers. For this phase of the testing they removed the normal NPCs for entering dungeons and are forcing everyone to use the Duty Finder.

Still no Conjurer. I was hoping It'd be in this Phase. Oh well...

Now that I finally know how to play Thaumaturge, it was pretty fun. I enjoyed Conjurer, too. Haven't decided what I'll start as, unfortunately.

I tanked the first instance, Sastasha. Pretty fun. Duty Finder grouped me with a healer and two ranged DPS, so it was fairly easy. Got a new helmet. Only thing I didn't care for is that you have to click the Loot box to see what dropped. It doesn't just automatically pop up with the item and Need/Greed/Pass buttons. Maybe it's a settings option.

Also, what's the shortcut to reply to /tells? Smiley: lol

If I remember correctly, there is also an large icon in the lower right that tells you there is loot that you haven't rolled/passed on yet. Pretty sure you can click that, or press Select/Back (PS3/360) to 'tab' over to it, and get the Need/Greed/Pass icon as well as the coffer.

I'm going to re-run a few of the dungeons to see what the drops are. Only got two useful pieces doing the 3 dungeons the first time.

Know what's fun?

Slipping and splashing coffee onto your laptop screen, so it ends up with an annoying bright patch in the bottom left corner. Smiley: madSmiley: madSmiley: mad

I've had this thing for a year and a half, and it still looks pristine. Well, looked.

Yeah, there is. I just find it annoying to have to either open the chest yourself or click that icon. It should be like in most other modern MMO where when anyone in the party opens the chest, the item pops up on everyone's screens. It just seems unnecessary to have to click the icon in order to see what dropped, though I can see the value of having such an icon in case **** is going down and you close out of a loot box.

We should have a mod insert an I in between the X and V in the title of this thread. Smiley: lol

Speaking of... I kind of hate the XIV logo where the I is super long, like x|v.
