If you're one of those people who really prefer your games not be locked at 30fps, there's now a Steam curator group that you can follow for information on whether a game is locked or not. It has already been called a hate group by some people for providing objective information on whether a game is FPS locked or not.

Interesting. I've never really noticed most framelocks though. As long as the game plays smooth. I think sometimes big changes in framerate are more perceptible than a steady reasonable one. It may be part of being old though and gaming since way before everything had to be "60 frames or it's unplayable!"

I'm one of those people who very rarely notices differences in frame rates unless we're in the super-slow category or wild swings. But I can't tell 30fps from 60fps. I've looked at videos and gifs supposedly showing it and... nope. Sometimes if I'm staring hard enough and looking for it, I'll see a difference in a debris cloud or something but I don't play my games by staring intently at how the dust spreads in a debris cloud. I also can't see Magic Eye pictures and 3D effects in movies almost never work for me. I might just be blind and "see" using echolocation and I just don't know it.

But if someone else wants to make a list of games, more power to 'em.

The best way to check is if the game allows you to change the FoV along with the FPS. Set the FoV to 60 and alternate between 30 and 60 FPS, 60 FPS will have smoother mouse look and should lessen the nausea you would normally feel at that FoV. At least for me it does.

In higher motion games it's very noticeable, although only sometimes to the point of being detrimental. Overall though, it's simply a matter of preference in most games. I never used to be able to see it, but after building my new system and being able to constantly run games at a steady 60+, it's annoying when some games drop back to 30.

Seems like trying to force myself to notice the difference misses the point. But now that you mention it, I don't think I've ever consciously noticed FoV before either and that's another thing some people go irate over. Never gotten nauseous or a headache from a video game no matter what the FoV was set at. Most reaction I've ever felt was annoyance over things like excessive screen bob (like unmodded Stalker: SoC).

In short, Joph needs to upgrade his rig.

FPS is mildly noticeable to me, but as long as it's 30 or higher it's not enough for me to truly notice effect on gameplay. Much lower than 30, though and I start to get really annoyed. I like games that run 60 because if they dip a bit, they still tend to stay above 30.

FoV, on the other hand, is why I can't play a number of otherwise enjoyable games. Borderlands, for instance.

i7-860 @ 3.6GHz, 12GB memory, 7950 3GB video. Still runs new stuff at High with a decent framerate. Witcher 3 runs at 50-60fps for example. I've been playing Sniper Elite 3 and that runs at 90+ fps. I don't notice framerate so much but I keep the display up as a general indicator of how well my system is handling the game.

I'll happily admit that it may just be a physiological thing with me, my eyes and how I perceive things though. Enough people rant about it that I assume they ARE noticing it. I'm okay with not noticing it since that means I have one less thing to be disappointed with when I get a new game.

That's about like me. As long as it's over 30, I don't notice the difference. Obviously if it was 15fps, I'd pick up on the slide show happening on my screen. And, yeah, I like seeing that the game is running 60+ just because I figure it won't choke up to slide show levels during a big action sequence or a bunch of NPCs running onto the screen.

I had to Google "FoV"

I don't notice frame rate changes either unless it dips below 30. But that's probably an old people thing.

Maybe. Very few framerate debates back in the day regarding Colecovision versus Intellivision.

That's because if you ran Pitfall! side by side it was objectively clear which console ran it better.

Bad FoV can definitely be annoying to me. Borderlands did not bother me but I could not play Amalur The Reckoning without hacking it. Especially if you have a 3rd person character who takes up an immense amount of screen space.

Intellivision had those TSR exclusives though.
