I wouldn't buy an ugly couch or chair, but I could never justify spending as much as the designer chair costs.
I would because things like that bring me a lot of joy. I've been looking for
Martin Visser's BR 02 sofa for a while now but even in dreadful condition they still sell for over $500, recently renovated and they're around $2500 when a new one is between $3-4000. Again a design that's been for sale continuously since the late 50's so it's not like there's very few of them left or anything.
My point being that while they cost a lot, you can always sell them for quite a significant portion of their new value.

Well, you can get a similar Eames chair (non-vintage) for like
$900 here. More than I want to spend on a single chair, because I don't make $100k/year, but not nearly as bad as $4k... or $9k.
It's also got fake leather and the wrong feet and I personally wouldn't want to live with knowing I have an imitation one even if it's significantly cheaper.
Edit edit: Yes I know I'm an elitist **** about this, probably more so than about anything else. I ******* love design
