what is your "process" for soloing mobs? (lvl 40ish)Follow

#1 Mar 22 2007 at 9:00 PM Rating: Decent
I'm a level 39 Warrior and still pretty new to the game. I made this thread because I've been reading about people who are getting 20,000+ XP/hr solo, and right now I'm lucky to be getting 15,000. I have a mostly 2H arms build, with a smattering of fury and protection. I have good equipment, though probably not the best of the best.

Typically I stay in Battle stance and start out with Charge + Rend. From then on I mostly just build up rage and use Heroic Strike whenever it becomes available, plus Overpower whenever possible. Toward the end of the battle I start mashing Execute. After the fight I immediately switch to my "spirit" gear to facilitate faster HP regeneration (courtesy of ItemRack).

Right now, soloing in Stranglethorn and Badlands, I can only keep a constant chain of battles going if I fight mobs a couple levels below me. It seems like there should be a more, I don't know, "sophisticated" way of getting things done faster. Any help from the experienced solo Warriors out there would be appreciated. Thanks!

EDIT: I just ran across this post which gives lots of good info, but any other advice would be appreciated!

I am also arms, my battle order is

Charge->Rend->Zerker->Pummel if they are a caster->Whirlwind->white wack, dead mob.
Intercept->Pummel if they are a caster->Whirlwind->white wack->white wack another dead mob

Go Back to battle stance and start over

Arms build as well (lev 58)
Do not put point in protection until you have filled out the arms tree and have 5 points in cruelty

Charge
Rend
Thuderclap
Demo
Mortal strike until end
If I have too much rage, I throw some extra thunderclap or sunder armor.

If I fight mobs below my level (in Azeroth) I can keep going a loong time without need for bandage.

Ignore the above post.

3/3 Tactical Mastery will help you immensely in soloing. You will be switching stances a lot.

Battle Stance for Charge, Overpower

Zerker Stance for Beserker Rage, Whirlwind

Having 25 rage instead of 10 rage when you switch stances is invaluable.

For the most part, I'd avoid Rend. While good at lower levels, the higher levels the mobs become the more useless this skill becomes. It just doesn't tick for enough.

The "process" is going to differ greatly based on the mob.

I'd say in general:
Charge
Thunderclap
Zerker Stance
Beserker Rage
Mortal Strike
Whirlwind
Mortal Strike
Hamstring
(If there are any dodges from the mob, do a quick rage dump to get yourself as close to or below the 25 rage mark and then switch to Battle Stance and Overpower)
Mortal Strike
Whirlwind

If at any point during that fight, you get above 50ish rage and you have Mortal Strike and Whirlwind on cooldown, go ahead and use Heroic Strike until you are at about 15-20 Rage after you use Mortal Strike.

Using Heroic Strike on a consistant basis, especially with 2H Arms will nerf your DPS so hard. You don't have an offhand to build rage for you, so when you use Heroic Strike constantly, you won't have white hits generating rage for you. It should realistically be nothing more then a Rage dump for you when you are generating too much to use with MS/WW.

Using a Macro for Overpower so you don't have to take as many manual steps will help you become more efficient with it. Hope this helps and have fun.

this only works if you're fighting yellow or orange mobs, greens die too quickly for it to be effective, but believe it or not: sunder.

don't believe me? download the recap addon, set it to show dps from the last fight only, then go about your business. get a feel for your average dps, and your lucky lucky max dps.

now start each fight by stacking 5 sunders... according to recap, your dps went up, didn't it?

stacking sunders makes the first 20% damage go achingly slow, typically mobs will be going toe to toe with you, while the last 80% will go very quickly.

sunders also can proc overpower, crusader, sword spec, etc.

I too have noticed that a healthy diet of sunders, especially on mobs I know will take a long time will help my damage go up quite a bit. I notice more crits too. Not sure if that's a function of the armor rating being lowered by several hundred on the mob or not, but I've noticed it after I've sundered.

All you arms warriors are most likely going to hate me for this but, IMO, i think DW is slightly better than 2h weapons. True, we will miss out on sweeping strikes and our damage from abilities will be lower, but I think our overall DPS is strictly better than having a 2h weapon and having it miss/dodged/parried every now and then pretty much lowers DPS by a noticeable amount.

Also, I do believe 1h and 2h weapons both generate equal amount of rage per hit, so with duel wield, it would be producing a bit more, right? Or is it based on damage and crits?

I'm quite sure that rage is calculated on damage or attack speed or somthing, not by swing.

Weapons with the same DPS regardless of speed will generate the same average amount of rage. This change equated to 1Hs generating a bit more rage while 2Hs noticed a slight drop in it.

DW will generally out damage 2H, if you have the gear for it. The miss rate on DW is much harder to overcome then with 2H, so the statement that DW misses less or that DW misses mean less then 2H misses is erroneous.

dual wielding does not produce significantly more rage until you start stacking upwards of +6-7% hit.

in fact, because 2H weapons are easier to keep current than 1H's, lowbie arms warriors will typically have more rage to work with, especially when considering talents like imp charge and anger management.

from what i understand, and sometimes it aint much, but there are two different approaches, depending on what you're fighting....multiple add mobs or soloing one at a time

for the mobs:

choose either caster or ranged attacker and intercept(charge if no rage), TC, sunder Xalot until stack of 5, bloodrage and overpower or heroic until execute is ready

for solo mobs:

zerker stance, intercept, again SPAM SUNDER until x5, then overpower/heroic until execute is available(if no rage available, charge then switch to zerker)

feel free to mix in hamstring if the mobs run away or if there are other close mobs you don't want to aggro....

would love to hear differing opinions on what approach....almost every warrior in my guild says "spam sunder", and we have like 200 70's.....(DM)

arms specced for now, haven't re-specced yet, but not looking to.....

bezerker stance is your friend......use it....pummel is HUGE against casters....finally! a way to interrupt casters while using my polearm!!

2h pwns DW

period.

end of story.

FOR THE HORDE!

i normally go /lazy mode.

all in battle stance

Charge
Battle Shout
Rend (+damage buff from arms tree)
Mortal Strike
(Overpower if necessary)
Execute

I can normally chain about 4-6 yellow to orange mobs without healing.

As of 40 I have been using a stratergy very simmilar to zeroblade, with simmilar results. It works great for arms 40+

While I'm not one to speed kill I usually use the following routine:

Charge (if this won't leave me open to aggroing too many mobs)
Rend
TC
Sunder several times
If it's a run away mob then I work in a Hamstring, cause I hate chasing things down.
I'll throw in an additional TC or two during the battle.
If I haven't already been buffed by Heroic Shout already I'll throw that on near the beginning of the battle.

Thanks much for all the replies. I've recently been using tactics similar to Zeroblade's and found that it works fairly well, especially when grinding (Mortal Strike is wonderful).

Those of you who suggested using Sunder and Thunder Clap, do you use it on every single mob, even while grinding, or only on "tough" enemies? It seems like you could finish the entire fight in the time it takes to stack up 5 Sunders. I can never quite tell if the benefit from skills like Thunder Clap, Sunder, and Demoralizing Shout outweigh simply doing an all out attack.

Thanks again for the help!

I pretty much go:

Charge
MS/WW
Hamstring if they are a runner mob
Battle shout just before
Execute!

I don't bother with rend since I have about a 25% crit chance I usually get my Deep wounds and +damage going fairly quickly.

I'm also suicidal and regularly throw myself into multiple mobs to get use out of Sweeping strikes and Imp disciplines. That is also the only time I use Demo and TC.

I was out killing a Fury Warrior today while grinding. It was fun XD. I love when both the first hit after charge and MS crit. Oops, there went half your health.

Something else about dual wielding... when i dual wield I try to use a fast weapon in my off hand. I've noticed when I do this that because of the greater number of swings with the fast weapon, the greater the number of opportunities the baddies have to dodge, which means I get to pop overpower all the time and it has a great chance for getting more crits.

I'm a lvl 44 arms warrior.

I almost never switch stances. (Just never had a reason to)

I charge then hit with rend, followed by Demoralizing, followed by thunderclap.
Most of the time I find that I then have enough rage to hit em with Heroic.
At this point I will norm just straight up dps to build rage and will also use bloodrage to help build my rage up as well. Then throw in Heroic strikes, and MC if they are a healer. If the mob is a runner at 30-45% life I will hit it with hamstring. I wil also overpower at every opportunity.

I rinse an repeat and with mobs below to about 2-3 above I find that I can norm go 3-5 mobs before having to eat. i would say my average fight takes about 20-30 seconds.

This seems to also work ok in pvp.

(maybe I'm missing something with not changing stances. Don't know.)
