Keyboard and mouse setup for new to RoguesFollow

#1 Mar 30 2007 at 10:16 AM Rating: Decent
Hi everyone,

My main is a Protection Pally but figured I'd start an alt to give him some rested xp time, so I choose a NE Rogue, who is currently at level 6. My issue is that with my pally, I setup my buffs, seals etc and go in and melee, occasionally I may alter my seals but most of the time it's just stand there and fight it out with the mobs. With a Rogue it is different, we're more of a hit and move/stealth/attack class and I just wanted to ask some of you experienced players how you play, particularly mouse and KB because I feel like I'm just a little slow at the "button mashing"

First off I'm using all in-game default settings for my mouse (diamond razorback) and KB (standard kb, no programmable keys) as well I use standard layout for my talents and abilities in the action bars at the bottom of the screen. I use a combination of QWE and S for movement along with my mouse to steer/move and attack as well as hit my attacks on the action bar.

With my Rogue I have been trying to get into the hang of stealthing up to a mob, but I find I always have my mouse up in the centre of the screen to select my enemy then I have to move it down to click out of stealth mode, then hit an action from the action bar to attack and it seems so slow. I have also experimented with using my number keys to attack and while it does work fine, I am then stuck to just standing there while I mash the action buttons to hit my target. I'd like to be able to make myself a little more fluent in movement as well as hit my target with my actions because in PVP my opponent isn't going to stand still while I use my mouse to hit whatever attack I choose.

Hopefully I've clearly explained what I am struggling with in terms of movement and action bar clicking and someone can offer me some suggestions. Thanks in advance.

I try to move with the mouse and strafe with A and D. Sometimes i find myself moving with the keys but a good way to teach yourself is to unbind the forward key to force yourself to use the mouse.

Try to use TAB to target. It's fast and efficient. I bound Stealth to my Middle Mouse button and my mount on one of my side buttons. Bind your most used skills to 1-5 because they are close and easy to hit. I try to bind my CDs to the actual keys. Just don't bind vanish to V, lol, I find myself Vanishing when I try to open my bags. I need to fix that. Kick/Gouge is a good one to put on Q or E.

Just mess around with it and find something comfortable yet quick. It takes some time to get used to but with time you will have it all memorized.

Aside from the tab to target advise, I really can't say. I use a laptop with touchpad so I only use the mouse for looting and selecting stuff out of a mob. I rebound my movement keys so that they more closely resemble the arrow keys (w and s for forwards or back, a and d for strafe, while using the l and r arrow keys to pivot.) Once oriented, I move in with w and hit my opener Kidney Shot (9, so its close at hand when I move away from the arrows, plus its where I've memorized it to be :p)

Rogues are a bit too fast-paced to sit back and click, at least for me. Maybe with a mouse its a bit easier but I'm almost pure keyboard now. I still use my touchpad for regular travel, though. I'm alot more accurate hitting a key than clicking a button, so you might not have to but I'd advise memorizing button locations. for me, that means - is stealth, = is sprint, 9 is cheapshot/evasion, 7 is pickpocket/vanish, etc. If you use buttons, you want to pair them up so that if you get that bit of lag before entering combat, your buttons are properly paired. If they catch me trying to loot their pocket, I just hit 7 again and vanish. - will stealth or de-stealth, and I use it on all my nelf alts (shadowmeld, prowl, etc)

I mainly use the W,A,S,D keys for movement together with my mouse. TAB for targeting, space bar for jump, 1 for mount and 4 for stealth. Everything else I click (mainly macros) but unfortunately I'm struggling, loosing time clicking on different macros/abilities. I don't know how I made it to level 70 using this method.

I have been doing a heap of reading up on this subject in other forums and found a piece of hardware one cannot surpass.

Check it out

I've ordered it and can't wait to take my gaming to a new level...

I bought the belkin nostromo keypad for the exact same reason and learned to move with the mouse. I used to use the mouse left handed and actually had to learn to use it with the right. After a couple of days, I couldn't dream of going back.

It has improved my rogue's performance tremendously.

I used to use 5 for stealth however since I hit 40 and obtained 2 rows of action bars (not counting various others for trinket switches) I bound the second bottom row (bottom right row you need to select in interface options advanced to keep open 24/7.) First and last buttons to put my stealth and mount respectively and used 5 for vanish 6 for blinding. The stealth button and mount buttons are bounded to g and h respectively. ie left hand is direction and talents. mouse is for tricky targeting and pressing the buttons that my left hand can't reach easily.

My setup is the numpad for actionbar with:
zero being the primary CP generator, hemo/ss/mutilate/backstab
1-3 the finishers, Evis. Kshot, Rupture/SnD
4-6 the specials, Cold Blood, Distract/Evade, Sprint
7-9 long CD/rarely used skills, Prep, Blind, Shiv/Perception (rarely used finishers go here if I have free space which depends on my spec)

the number keys above the letters, 1 deadly throw, 2 trinket 1, 3 trinket 2, 4 trinket 3, 5 trinket 4

T - Cloak of Shadows
V - Vanish
F - Stealth
Z, X, C - Wildcards, pots, items, w/e the situation calls for.

I stopped using the mouse pretty much at this point.

If you're gonna PvP, steering with the mouse if pretty much a requirement. Especially if you're gonna do some hardcore PvP. Turning with keys is totally inefficient. Like this warrior I fought a while back. He only used his keys to turn so I could just use the Q and E buttons and the right mouse button to strafe him and backstabbed the dude till he died. Funny, but sad.

I also binded my stealth to the ~ button. It's out of the way, and close to my hand. I also find that because I rely on my house for steering, I find it hard to get to the 6, 7, 8, 9, 0, -, = buttons because my mouse hand is tied up with steering, and my left hand is strafing with Q and E and hitting the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 buttons at the same time. So if I need to I can rush over and hit the higher end numbers, but those are just there pretty much. So I have some trouble prioritizing what attacks/skills I should put on the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. But the ones you should definably have close to your keyboard hand should be, Sinister Strike or Hemo, gouge, Eviscerate, and Kidney Shot.

Yeah, but I kept mis-hitting anything past 5, so I opted for my current setup. With macros though, you can simplify the key setup to be more friendly/efficient.

Don't worry about it till you get to 40+.

I have a strange setup on my 5 button mouse:

Middle Mouse: "Hide" Macro, copy-paste:

/cast Stealth
/cast [nostealth] Shadowmeld
/cast [combat] Vanish

This means that I stealth, Shadowmeld if it's on cooldown, and Vanish if in
combat. Nice for allpurpose stuff. It does, however, give you two error
messages, so make sure you have a muting addon... /e shudders.

Left mouse button (mouse 4): Sinister Strike/Ghostly Strike Macro (can't remember off-hand, sorry!), Ambush when stealthed.

Right mouse button (mouse 5): Finisher I use usually, Pickpocket (stealthed)

I move usually using the mouse with left+right arrows strafing, NUMPAD 0 for
jump.

EDIT: come to think of it, my Ghostly Macro "Strike" is on notepad on my desktop. XD

/castsequence [reset:20] Ghostly Strike, Sinister Strike, Sinister Strike,
Sinister Strike, Sinister Strike, Sinister Strike, Sinister Strike, Sinister
Strike, Sinister Strike

The only thing I ever go down to the action bar for is Pick Lock and Sap, as
well as my "RUN!" technique (Evasion and Sprint)

This is quite a simple setup, easy to remember but not too versatile. I was
thinking of binding the rest of the Action Bar to my NUMPAD.

i will talk on an azerty keyboard, but i'll give the "translates" in a qwerty one too. I dont know how does & and 1 are typed on a qwerty kb so i'll say 1 and shift-1

z (w on a qwerty kb): move forward
s : move backward (dont use often, think to bind a trinket or some comsumable stuff)
q (a on a qwerty kb): turn left (strafe left when right mouse button is pressed)
d : turn right (strafe right when right mouse button is pressed)

mouse to turn the camera, one mouse-side button tu turn on/off auto attack, the other one to talk on teamspeak (push to talk mode)

a (q on a qwerty kb): stealth
e : backstab, mutilate of even hemo
f : kick
g : cant remeber atm x) a trinket though...
r : auto-run, thins bind is a pure reflex, i cant change it :/
t : sprint
tab: trinket, most of the time my tidal charm
< : various trinket
w : various trinket
x : targeting next ennemy (or last one... cant remember too ^^)
c : grenade
v : healing potion in pvp, feint in instances

1 : gouge
2 : sinister strike, i plan to change this one, i never use it x)
3 : evisc
4 : kidney shot
5 : rupture

shift-1 : vanish
shift-2 : evasion
shift-3 : cold-blood if i have it, premed in stealth if not CB,
shift-4 : blind
shift-5 : preparation (i have it in near all of my builds)

i forgot to say that i move the camera with the mouse, nearly always with pushing the right button

and "w : various trinket" should be "w (z on qwerty kb): various trinket"

all i said was before BC, so all the new skills and items i will probably use when i'll start serious pvp are not yet binded, i'm to lazy to reconfigure all my bars so i just click on it.... but it will change x)

I find myself setting up in a weird way, because its how i play most games.

I use the arrow keys for the movement, along with a bit of mouse moving here and there, stealth on middle mouse, autorun on outside/mount inside if you have the buttons. For skills, i put SS on numpad1, and my finishing moves on numpad0, jump is numpad4, riposte is pagedown, rupture is delete. In stealth i have garrote on either pagedown or numpad1(depending on build), sap on delete, cheap shot on numpad0. Any skills i dont have bound to keys over on the numpad or del end pagedown, i have gotten very used to their location so i can speedclick them from anywhere on the screen. This build works VERY well for spamming SS, and hitting a close finishing move, instead of having to stretch ur fingers up above your wasd. I tend to use only my index, pinky, and thumb for movement, and my middle and pointer finger for skills, of course pinky for the skills on del end and pagedown. A buddy of mine plays a hunter with the wasd setup, but in his few hours of playing my rogue, he used my setup when he created his own rogue.

My main is a mage and I plan to re-roll a rogue once I resubscribe. Consequently, I am used to merely clicking on the spells in my four rows of spell/ability bars (two on the bottom and two on the left side). Yes I use the mouse for steering but then I also use it to cast, attack, etc. Is it really completely manditory for one to use 1, 2, 3, etc. for the abilities while playing a rogue? Or can I stay with my old technique of steering and casting with my mouse.

I'm tired of worrying about mana with my mage so the rogue is a definent change.
