shockadin at 40Follow

I've read that shockadins have the most controllable burst damage for PvP purposes, and of my guild's paladins (we're all in the high 30's to low 40's, about 6 or so of us) we have 3 ret, 2 prot, and 1 holy-healing specced paladins...but no holy-damage specs! I was gonna change from prot to holy-damage, b/c while 1 prot paladin is great, 2 is a hindrance, so I need some advice...

First off, is a shockadin better with a 2-hander or with a sword/shield?
Second, considering I won't have much + spell damage, what would be a good substitute for the primary stat? Int? Or simply gear up like a warrior?
Third, should I tell people in pugs that I'm ret simply so they dont think I'm a healer?
Fourth, a rate-my-build (don't normally do this but since here's the post anyway I will), it's sort of a progression, where I'll be at every 10 levels starting from 40, rather than simply what I plan to do (since I could go in many different directions at 40 with the same build plan for 70):
Level 40
Level 50
Level 60
Level 70

I don't really think that shockadin is a viable levelling build. It certainly works for pvp, but it takes some talents to get there. It really looks to me like you're leveling as a holy paladin and then taking some ret at the end for kicks. If you insist on levelling into shockadin (rather than respeccing later), you might want to just get the retribution parts that will help you level and add to your shockadin goodness later on. You could try something like this at 40.

Why I wanted a shockadin is in the post already, I'm not gonna bother typing again what I said.

To me Holy Damage and Holy Healing are pretty much the same. Variance comes in speccing Ret or Prot with the extra stat points, but the Healing tree should generally look similar for most Holy Paladins.

I think nimrokon's point was that you basically have a Healing build at 40, not a 'Holy DPS' build. If you wanted Holy dps, it would help to have +spell damage, as well as +int, mana and spellcrit, which you won't find much of round that level, at least in Plate. Its not really till the Outlands that Plate has those kind of bonuses. If you want DPS, it is probably better to go full Ret with Spiritual Focus until much later (ie. post 60).

Yeah I changed my mind, my plan now is to go shockadin at 58 (my 60 build minus the cooldown talent on ret) because I realized all the gear I'm getting right now is better for prot.

But let's focus less on the build, what I want to know is which would serve the greater purpose for a shockadin - shield or 2-hander?

Thanks for saying what I was trying to say better Raverbasher. (At least I tried.)

As to 2-hander or sword and board. I think you're probably better off with a 2-hander. The purpose of shockadin is burst damage, and the 2-h sword will certainly do more damage, and do it in bigger chunks at a time. Also, the slower weapon speeds will let you toss out more spells between swings.

Of course, if you're having trouble dying before you can unload your full holy damage, the sword and board might give you some more staying power (my mitigation goes up about 15% using the sword and shield over a 2-hander).
