Boycotting Prot BuildFollow

Something interesting has happened in my guild. All of us lvl 70 warriors have refused to go Prot build. It wasn't really a planned group decision, as much as just the expression of ideas growing into a mindset for all of us.

We're currently running Kara and all the heroics we're keyed for. And we're doing it as fury and arms warriors.

Speccing prot makes the game harder and more boring for a warrior. Speccing arms/fury makes the instances harder for the party, but makes overall game play more enjoyable for the warrior.

At some point when I'm done with all my rep grinds, mat farming, etc., I'll probably go to Prot. But in the meantime, I'm not sacrificing my overall game enjoyment.

I like walking. I like walking a lot. The other day I decided to wake up at 2 AM and walk 24 miles to work and back because its a lot harder, but I sure do enjoy walking. I even convinced a bunch of other people to walk with me, just so I didn't have to feel alone doing it, and felt I had a purpose. Yeap.

I actually enjoy protect alot more too. It's not at all bad in pvp or BG, you have more survivability and weapons to use versus spellcasting classes...while still having some damage output (learn how to use switch stances well and you'll do fine). Plus, I don't enjoy being a second rate DD...which warrior atleast around my levels (50) is far from the being the best dd. Why pretend like it is.

I started out with prot/arms build, just taking talents that looked cool. I guess a lot of folks on my server go arms or fury (PvP server)because I got gasps of awe from other warriors fighting nearby when they saw how many mobs I could tank and stay alive. I maxed out shield spec, got the best shield I could get, and spammed shield block whenever it was off of cooldown. On the downside it took me a while to chop through mobs but the time saved in staying alive and not needing corpse runs more than made up for it.

And of course all your healers need to be fully healspecced to even stand a chance of keeping you alive.

Prot really isn't all that bad. I spec'd prot a few weeks ago (I had been Arms since I made my warrior but I had a few points in prot so I was no stranger to tanking), because my guild needed more tanks. I will admit, at first I didn't like it too much, but as I learned how to utilize all the tools I had avalable I started to really enjoy it.

Also the only thing I really hate as a prot warrior is PvP. Maybe I still need some practice but the only thing I can reliably beat is a rogue now, and thats only because they can barely touch me in full tank gear.

I thought farming would be horrible as Prot too, but its really not that bad. In fact, I kill things almost as fast as I did when I was arms. All I had to do was get some decent one handers to utilize Devastate and I was good to go.

That is your choice, since it is your char. It doesn't matter at all when you're solo.

When you're in a group, though, particularly in a guild group, you should be concerned with everyone's enjoyment of the game, not just your own. When you refuse to spec Prot, you make your healers work harder, as well as alienating your damage-dealers and likely forcing them to hold back.

You pay for the game, and you should play it how you want. But once your play choices become a liability to the people you group with, don't be surprised when you find yourself running solo a lot more often.

My warrior is level 68 at this time. I put 11 pts into fury to pick up Piercing Howl, an ability I have found very handy, the rest into protection.

I find tanking to be fun and rewarding. You have to keep track of a lot of activity, from holding agro to keeping the healers up. I don't need to be at the top of the damage charts to feel I've done my job. I've seen DPS types fall during a fight, and the boss still goes down. Almost never is that the case when the tank falls. All eyes are on the tank!!

Farming and soloing became easier than it used to be with 1H Weapon Spec. and Shield Slam is a 20 rage talent, 17 with Focused Rage. Vitality can add a bit of Attack Power.

Battle Grounds aren't all that bad for me. Concussion Blow is the single best PVP abilty in that tree. Also, AV BG needs a tank to bring down the general. I'm not a talented PVPer, so supporting and disruption roles are my best chance to help the team. I just have to look for those opportunities.

As my gear improves, I will respec. It will be to pull the 5 pts out of Anicipation when +Def is high enough, but I will remain protection by and large. That's my comfort zone.

By the way, I'm leveling an Arms warrior to satisfy the DPS urges. Gotta admit, it's fun taking down 3 mobs at a time with Sweeping strikes and Cleaves after Battle Shouting and debuffing them. :-)

I used to have that attitude. I just wanted to PvP when I hit lvl 70 and I was for the first week I hit it, but soon after I was getting asked to tank instances and I knew that my guild didn't really want a warrior in a 5 man that wasn't specced prot, or hybrid tank. Also, I knew that I could get more pug runs and essentially guild runs as a tank. So after some thinking I dumped some points into protection, got kicked from my guild for "wasting" my guild leader's time, joined a guild with my rl friends from work and now we have certain instances on farm status. BM is one of them. 3 BM's in less than 2hrs is pretty nice. Great rep!

Needless to say, I was one of those warriors who hated to tank, now I enjoy it more than I did. I found a way to have fun and be an asset to the rest of my friends and/or pugs that I group with. Most groups won't take me on a run unless I have some points into protection and so on. Now every time that I'm on, I get asked to tank, and I usually go if I'm not questing.

I guess its your ultimate decision on your spec, and if you're guild is ok with that, great. But you would be doing your guild a favor by speccing to be a tank. At least your healers would like it. I found out, by checking out warriors on my server, that there aren't too many tanks (that I could see) Since most of these instances drop tank and PvP Gear, I thought why not do my part until we all get geared, then I'll just go back to my PvP build and roll house. Not that I don't anymore, its just a little closer than I would like it to be, against other warriors at least.

Have fun with your build, but keep your fellow Alliance/Horde/Guild mates in mind too! Kara might be doable with out a tank, but it would go a lot smoother with one!!

Grollog, why don't you like playing protection? Personally I have fun tanking Kara and about anything else.

Hope all of your priests decided to spec shadow, all of your paladins ret, all of your druids feral, and your shamans enhancing in response. You do what you have tado to raid effectively, if this means taking an extra 10 seconds to kill a mob to farm pots, then so be it. What about all of those holy priests, resto druids, resto shamans and to a lesser extent holy paladins that have to farm pots as well?

They shouldn't have to sacrifice enjoying thier game too.
