I'm getting ready to ding 40 and will be looking at getting armor upgrades.

Any specific mail pieces I should look for (the "... of the <animal>) in choosing pieces?

Scorpid mail is what you are looking for. If you take your time, you should be able to swap out your leather for mail without losing agility. Be picky.

dont go lusty for new armor right away or your going to end up looking like a pally taking his dog for a walk XD it takes a lil' time to get upgraded peices, your nice agi leather might hold you over for awhile.

Until you get some nice "of the Monkey" pieces or mail with loads of Agi, stick with leather.

Armor does nothing for you if you're stacking the wrong stats.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I did get a little crazy shopping ahead. But since I haven't equipped anything, hopefully I can turn it around on the AH and make a little profit since I enchanted some of it.

So lesson is:
"... of the Monkey" = good
and Agility is your friend

of the Falcon is even better in my opinion, but those are very rare.
basically i stick to:
Of the falcon (+agi, int)
of the bandit (outlands, +agi, sta and AP)
of the monkey (+agi, sta)
of agility (+agi)
of power (+AP)

of the elder (outlands, +int, sta and mp5)
of the eagle (+int, sta)
of intellect
of stamina

last 4 only if you are really lacking hp/mana (oom halfway through the fight, getting killed before your able to get out of range)

edit: i zucks in tyypings.

While there shouldn’t be a big hurry to squeeze into some jingle jangle armor, one point should be kept in mind. Since the changes that came with Outland, I think they came a bit before the expansion but why be technical, our pets share a percentage of a few of our stats. And while I’m a bit fuzzy on what is and is not shared, I believe that armor is one of them. So while we do not need a lot of armor, as we rarely get hit, the more armor we have the more armor our pets have.

And I believe stamina is another stat our pets get a percentage of. I always preferred to mix in a lot of falcon gear on my hunters because, since they rarely got hit, they didn’t really need the extra hit points from stamina. But now the more hit points we have the more hit points our pets have.

While I really love this change, as it allows our pets to scale with us, it does tend to complicate what kind of gear to wear. On the bright side, it really doesn’t mater. If you equip a hunter in a full set of cloth armor of the owl he and his pet are still going to kick butt. *grins*

pets get a percentage of all our stats, at least the ones that matter.
armor i do not know, but i'll check that soon...
i'll post when i know more.

and since Falcon gear is so rare =( you'll have a good amount of Monkey stuff anyway.

pets get armour boost from hunters armour also do sm armoury and sm cath runs if u want mail items the helm of the end boss in amrouy has agi and increase crit rate by 14 and gloves of last bosses in cath have agi and increase attack power by i think around 28 both are mail items, helm drops oftern but the gloves i havent seen drop in 20 cath runs but other wise us quest items or wait till 48-50 and do mara as u get good mail drops there

If I were to do it all over again, I'd look for these pieces:
Of The Falcon (Agi + Int)
Of Power (AP)
Of the Monkey (Agi + Stam)
Of Agility (twice as much Agi as mixed stat gear)
Of The Wolf (Agi + Spirit)

In that order. But like Cal said, it's really complicated, because you DO have to think about your attack power and DPS, but you also have to think about how everything will effect your pet, as well. Of course, of the Falcon will affect your DPS a litle bit, and contribute to your Mana, while still giving your pet a nice boost in armor. Of Power will do a lot for your DPS, but next to nothing for your pet. Monkey will affect your DPS the same amount as Falcon, except without the mana boost, but it will REALLY benefit your pet. Agility will give you extra crit and dodge while giving you a small boost in AP, but that armor that you get from it, goes straight to Fluffy.

I say get a nice mix, and stay away from str.. Until you're level 60+, it doesn't matter very much, since you're going to swap out gear every few levels... Unless you're like me, and stayed with level 40 gear up until about 53, because I *couldn't* find anything better. I swear that there was a level gap in green gear.

Also, be careful with the Tough Scorpid gear. By the time my old Hunter hit 40, I had mostly gear that gave me Agi/Stam (like the Dark Leather stuff you can craft with Leatherworking). It ended up becoming I would gain 1-2 agi per piece of armor, but lose 4-8 stam per piece, which really isn't worth it. Spirit is nice for grinding, but having an extra 3-400 hp can be even nicer, especialy if your going Beast Master.
