So I have been die-hard subtlety spec since day 1, my goal to have Shadowstep was finally reached at 50 and I gotta say I loved it. yes "loved" as in past tense. As I continued on to 60 I noticed that I was beginning to take more and more damage during the course of the fight requiring me to eat or bandage fairly often.

During that time I had been reading about several other specs that intrigued me, combat fists and the infamous 30/0/31 build. I ruled out combat fists, due to lack of good fist weapons for now. For 30/0/31 I realized for it to be useful pre-70 I needed to at least be able to get Cold Blood after filling in 31 in sub. So I waited until 61 then respecced. OH EM GEE. Gotta say even lacking it's full potential (5/5 in seal fate + QR) it is quite the power house.

In some test duels with a warrior (lvl 68) If he lets me land the opening hit (CS) I can bring him down to under 30% HP before he can land any significant damage. ... unfortuanately then I have nothing left and he just smacks me a few times, but still the burst damage this build is capable of really did amaze me.

At first when I heard about this build it sounded very much like a 3-minute mage build, relying heavily on CB. But with Prep added in there to reset CB/premed/vanish as needed I have found the utility/survivability to be quite high as well.

I gotta say I am sorry I was less accepting of this build at first. So for now I'll be running this build until I can get my hands on some good fist weapons.

As I see it:

Assassination: Huge opening damage, decent melee but not enough to do well if you don't get opener. Haven't specced pure assas before but I absolutely love their lower tier talents. Ruthlessness and Relentless Strikes proc and work so often its hard to get used to playing a rogue without them.

Combat: (at least for me with maces) not really as much about getting that big crit as getting alot of smaller crits and doing higher damage on every blow.
I'm now DWing Fists of Reckoning (at the level requirement for them of 61. I feel godly and I havent even fully upgraded my gear :p note the crappy thrown I keep for the stat bonus and shuriken look) and I do an average of around 300 white damage and ~400 per SS/single point evis when burning off the reccuring combo point and energy procs from ruthless and relentless.

(Armory profile: http://armory.worldofwarcraft.com/#character-sheet.xml?r=Moonrunner&n=Malcovitch )

Subtlety: Its all about mob management. Imp sap made my subtlety rogue alt's poison quest an absolute BREEZE to do (alliance, not horde. Horde poison quest is even more of a bizitch.) Extra combo points, lovely, but I really don't think I could make a viable build in it without a mainhand dagger. Havent built far enough into it yet (lv 27, 0/2/16) to really say much more.

If you PvP a lot that 30/0/31 build is badass. Pretty much the ultimate.

If you are more concerened with leveling+decent PvP i'd really try mutilate out. >_>

cmon, i know the little tsetsuo inside you wants too!

I tried shadowstep! :\

30/8/13 and 21/8/22 were both great, fun, powerful PvP builds back in the day. As I see it, 30/0/31 should be great for your average world PvP and BGs. It should also grind pretty well at 70 via imp BS + SF. While it might not drop things as fast as other builds, it has some nice tricks built in to it.... and you shouldn't take much damage.

We currently have a rogue in the guild that's playing the 30/0/31 build and loves it for PvP. When we take him to kara he doesn't do remarkable damage, but he still holds his own (despite being relatively crappy gear compared to the rest of the raid). I can see this build being great for everything short of raiding and maybe high end arena (which I'm not that experienced with). It would probably be decent for heroics, as you have imp sap and 2x CDs which come in handy.... and burst damage/stuns on 1 trash mob killing it before it can do anything is never bad.

I'll probably try this out sometime soon just for fun in BGs. I'm gonna wait until I have a whole weekend to play and then respec. If you're looking for additional builds to try with daggers once you hit level 70, 41/20/0 and 30/26/5 are also pretty fun - and both put out great damage in instances while still doing pretty good in PvP.

Edit: Rating you up because you're still wearing the pants from gnomer and using the mason's frat ring... and that made me spit my coffee out... good times and old memories :)

It's basically the Arena build since you have prep up every fight.

i tried mutilate build on my other rogue @53. It was ok, I saw the inherent value in the build but it just wasn't the way i play, I like having survivability (my frost mage was all frost 100% specced into it once I was done raiding, I had 10 in arcane for raiding for clearcasting while raiding.)

Once I hit 70 I will be going for either gladiator or at a minimum GM claws and trying that build out. I'll also pick up 2 strong daggers and try mutilate as well.

Even for PvE i am enjoying this build though, I just go into the fight like I would a PvP fight and it works out ok (so far at least).

Since I'm @ 20g for a respec and trying to save for an epic mount still (250 to go) I don't want to respec again until I hit 70 and have all my options in front of me.

I've actually heard that it's not so great on the high end (IE: 5v5 teams with high ratings) from a few friends that do nothing but PvP and are on said teams. They all seem to play either 41/20/0 or Combat fist/mace/sword (one plays 30/31/0 with fists). Aparently the combat tallents help a lot since the higher end players have a good chunk of HP and res, along with coordinated healers. Again, I can't directly comment on this. My 5 man team is rated like 1300 lol... though I've never even played with them... it's just a bunch of people from out PvP guild who want a few points from week to weak... 10 games a week win or lose... they don't care.
