Shadow Priest?Follow

#1 Apr 04 2007 at 5:49 PM Rating: Decent
Hey, i just started a priest with my friend, i already have a melee DPS and a Healer, so i wanted to make a DPS caster, so i took Priest, but now i was wondering if, as a Shadow Priest, i'll get alot of invites for groups? My friend's gonna be a Holy Paladin, so i don't have to heal.. and i think i could off-heal with Vampiric Embrace, What do you guys think?

And.. just wondering, is this a good build? :

Sorry if it's not good, it's my first priest, and my first look at the priest's talent calculator

As a shadow priest you'll get alot of invites for groups, but I doubt they will be because they need more dps. However, if, Like you said you'll be grouping often with your holy-pally friend then you should be ok. And yes, off healing with ve, is effective, hell I've even main healed bosses with it in shadowform.

As for your build:

- shadow weaving is useful if you find yourself grouping with other shadow damage dealers often (warlocks + other shadow priests). I myself almost never grouped with anyone else who did shadow damage so I dropped it.

- shadow power + darkness might cause you trouble with over aggro, especially if you're nuking a mob while you're off healing. You'll either have to really hold back or pray that your tank can hold aggro (in some cases both).

- take one point off your imp. mind blast. 4/5 is 2 seconds, which means a 6 sec cd. that means you can cast two mindflays and follow it up with a mindblast, making that extra point kind of useless (unless of course you spam mindblast, which again leads me to the over aggro point)

- imp. pw:s isn't all that useful, 10% might seem good, but when the damage it takes is pretty low anyway, 10% will buy you about 1 hit more, if that even. Personally I would go with imp. pw: f as it's more of an increase that won't go away in 3 hits.

All my personal opinion of course, hope it was somewhat helpful.

Okay, yeah i agree, i'm gonna have alot of aggro problem, but do you think with

Shadow Affinity (-25% Threat) Silent Resolve (-12% Threat) and Blessing of

Salvation (-30% Threat) it's gonna be okay? That's -57% Threat, That's a lot.

Shadow Priests = A lot of invites, and you can main heal as a shadow priest. At least until end game, then you will more than likely want to be Disc/Holy or Holy/Disc.

So yes, you can DPS good. You may be expected to heal however.

Silent Resolve does not apply to Shadow Damage, unfortunately. That being said, with the pally buff you ought to be ok, though.

Between Shadow Affinity and BoS, you're running 52.5% of your base aggro (multiplicative .7*.75).

Trade Imp Shield of Imp Fort, much more useful. Shield is an "oh ****" button or used before a particularly nasty boss pull, Fort is alway on.
4/5 Imp Mind Blast is the most you need.
Grab 2 or 3 points in Shadow Focus, especially if you'd like to DPS in instances. Mobs your level have 4% resist rate, while orange mobs have 17% or more. That 4-6% helps a lot in those situations.
Shadow Weaving and Misery are both excellent if you intend to DPS in instances, especially near and after 60. Before that, it's not as necessary.

Do not intend to ever heal in shadowform or even heal in +dmg gear (50's and later), except maybe offhealing. VE is good at topping people off, not for actual healing.

This is for instances your level. But assume you are 70 and go help someone in Blood Furnace. I did that with less +healing than i have now +damage. And i'll be higher level. So it's ok to keep damage gear if you are above average level of the instance. That is if you don't have only +shadow, but +damage ;)

Okay, i'm now level 22, but i was just wondering if my technique was good

i use Holy Fire, Shadow Word:Pain, Power Word:Shield, Mind Blast, Mind Flay x2.

When i'll have Vampiric Embrace and Vampiric Touch, i'll use:

Vampiric Touch, Shadow Word:Pain, Vampiric Embrace, Mind Blast, Mind Flay x2.
(While Instancing)

Should i use the same technique while grinding? (Solo) And is that a good technique?

Thanks.

Sounds pretty good, though especially while leveling you may consider wanding down the last 15-25% of the mob's health to save on mana. If the situation warrants (little chance of adds, little chance of being ganked), you might also think about trading Shield for Rank 1 Psychic Scream (HolyFire/VT, then Pain, Flay, Mind Blast, Scream, Flay/Wand at your level). Especially at higher levels, this is MUCH more mana efficient (100 mana for scream versus 600 for shield), and the one hit you take while doing it is certainly worth it.
Also, only use VE (once you have it) if you need the healing.

For instancing, I've found my best rotation to start VE, VT, SWP (allows tank to build aggro with minimum threat yourself). After that, it really depends on the tank, instance, and mob. If the tank has lots of threat, the mob needs to die fast, the mob is going to be loose and poses little threat to me compared to the healer, or the mob doesn't keep to normal aggro patterns and attacks at random, I'll drop Death and Mind Blast followed by Mind Flays and Death/Blast whenever I can afford to based on my threat and mana. On the other hand, if the tank doesn't have much aggro, the mobs can kill me in a few shots, or the mob cannot be taunted, I stick with Mind Flays as much as possible and only start unleashing Blast/Death if the mob needs to die really fast (enraged, cannot be taunted and someone else pulled aggro, and so on). For these reasons, it's really important to me for the tank to have a UI mod called KHL Threat Meter, which I'd recommend looking into as you get higher.
