Hey Soverntear,

the maces (as a hiting weapon) losses value as you level up,
the math wocks against the maces but not so with the wand.
Some players will still have maces at higher levels but more for the stats and not the damage.
eg
Mace: Hand of Eternity

your level 10? you have a mace now? try going out side and fighting a level 8 or 9 mob like this...
Inner Fire
Renew
mace, mace, mace
Renew as needed
mace, mace, mace
and so on...

note how much damage you are doing with each hit.
at level 10 you can kill mobs with out useing any spells on them,
slow? yes. possible? yes.
you can try doing this once more when you get up to level 40 or so,
when I trying it now I get 1 damage per hit. This is becouse of the mob's armor, try fighting a turtle in melee and then try fighting a spellcaster, you can see the difference.

The reason priests prefer hiting with wands over mace is becouse the wand will bypass the mob's armor, just like a spell.
Try fighting a turtle with a mace then part way through the fight switch to wand.

Actually, part of the reason for your low dagger damage is that your skill probably isn't up enough (mob level divided by 5 is what you need to get max damage, or something like that).

Melee weapons trade damage for better stats - hence why NO caster one-hand has damage above about 41dps. Meanwhile, wands hit 120 or 150dps at level 70. Even at your level, wands to more damage than maces, and do them at range.

Wands are also very useful once you get to endgame (or even on lower instances). If you find yourself with too much threat compared to your tank, or with downtime as a healer, you can almost always wand to help by adding in a bit of extra damage while you wait for the tank to get more aggro, for someone to need healing, for you to regen mana, and so on. You can pretty much never do this with a melee weapon, as it puts you at far too much risk for being hit by the mob.

Also keep in mind once you get shadow weaving it will boost the damage of a shadow wand. Coupled with Wand Specialization in the Dis. tree you can get some real nice damage from wands. I remember in my high 60s my wand was hitting for 400 non crit.

Beyond the fact that in a group you are going to want to stay ranged, as a priest your melee weapon is for stats. If you can get decent stats by combining a mace and off hand item, then go for it. Just don't expect to be whacking mobs with it as your main weapon. Right now I also use [wowitem=31304]a mace[/wowitem] and [wowitem=25097]offhand item[/wowitem]. But I have better dps on [wowitem=27885]my wand[/wowitem].

Wands are great since you can use them at any distance, they never run out of ammo, use no mana, and do decent damage.
