I have solidly been a cat/wolf/boar hunter since I started WoW, cat for pvp wolf for raiding and boar for farming. With the speed I leveled in TBC and the fact I crossed the dark portal with my wolf my boar and broken tooth stayed lv 60.
Initially the boar was released in order to tame a lynx because I loved the skin.
Now I finaly released Broken Tooth even though he has been my longest serving pet.. The normalisation and the fact he doesn't look good at all made me hard to keap him.
Also I was never a fan of any flying or insectoid pet and ravagers (which other hunters find awesome) look like aliens.

I decided to try a wind serpent so I tamed a lv 69 netherstorm blue wind serpent and leveled it to 70 and loyalty 5 yesterday.

The only thing I can say is WOW... I never realised how good they actually were. In fact I respeced out of focused fire in order to get Go for the Thoat to take advantage of the lightning breath being instant and without cooldown.
The pet is amazing for everything.
I haven't tried it in raids yet but I did try it in duels and while farming.
It managed to hold agro with the lv 60 growl just by sheer damage output with GFTT and it is very very annoying in duels to keep damage on the target when I get deadzoned. Plus the breath can and does crit for about 300 without buffs, nothing like the past where it would crit for 500 as other have told me but still awesome. I imagine that in the hands of a beastmaster this pet must be an absolute killer. Only negative thing is that it doesn't learn screech :<
Plus I dont get the problems I got in the past when a mob or player is running to me and the pet can't manage to hit them because the moment it can't growl on a target it fires a breath.
I'm also tempted to try a dragonwahk because of the looks and fire breath but I'm really weary of DoTs messing up my traps.

Now I totally understand a friend of mine who got in the trouble of solo taming a son of hakkar pre-TBC in favor of the very very common LBRS worg, although worgs still are my favorite pets based purelly on looks alone :D

I'm in love, I think I'll lose my cat as well and tame a beloved EPL piggy, will be tough to get it to 70 but I'll give it a go :D

I have to agree with that. If you want to love it even more, take a look at its stats versus a cat's stats. Based off of standards, the Wind serpent has +0% HP, +0% armor, and +7% DPS. Cats have -5% HP, +0% armor, and +10% DPS. The serpent has more health, and just as much armor. Lightning breath more than takes care of that tiny lack of DPS.

I really wish that I could pull my wind serpent out again, but I'm level 63 and he's level 54. It would be a pain and a half to level him back up. I have the rare white Arash-ethis, one of the only two white wind serpents that are not casters (the other one is rare as well. level 40 Hayoc out in the Duskwallow Marsh).

I just got my first wind serpent at level 42 from Feralas with LB 4 Dash 2 and Bite 6 (son of a b*tch to tame).
I love the lil guy, only down side is that he opens with LB which pulls the mob closer due to the range. On the upside though, he gets initial aggro even quicker than my boar with LB.

Interesting. This implies that Bliz fixed something. I remember the old debates over WS, how some hunters loved them while other hunters detested them.

I may have to give a ws another try!

A note to young hunters reading this post: if you try windserp, check Petopia first to make sure the ws you get does not have wimpy caster stats. Some pets have caster stats that carry over when trained, making them low hp and low ac. Any beast w/ a mana bar can have this problem (most seem to). Check petopia at Brashendeavors.net to find a ws that does NOT have this problem. GL!

I remember what you mean, people saying that wind serpents would bug when mobs or players ran away and they would stand there doing nothing. As I never had one before 2 days ago I have no idea.

The really annoyinh problem that hasn't been fixed yet is that pets have a huge problem hiting moving targets as you know, trying to run up to them and when they catch up the mob is a few paces ahead again so out of range for growl or a normal attack, this becomes even more annoying if you are a beastmaster and want to stun someone but the pet can't get a damn hit to land.

The WS though seems to be immune to this problem as the breath has a 20yd range which is more than enough to guarantee a hit. I doubt this would trigger intimidation, if it did it would imbalanced but I have not tried it.

GFTT really shines with the wind serpents as well because every crit I do instantly translates to 150 instant damage from the breath and gets followed by a kill command for another 300-500 dmg, today in WSG it hit a mage for 715 damage (kill command) oO

Can't wait for them to remove global CD off kill command..
Then this pet will be the undoubted king of pet DPS.

The only thing that bothered me and I tested it extensivelly in duels with a friend is that the breath does not crit often at all, I think in 2 days I have only seen it crit 2 times, even on a sitting target it won't crit any more often than normaly :(

Edit: taming it was damn hard I played like a noob and forgot that it doesn't need to melee me so it just stayed back and fired at me for 600 damage annoyingly fast, got me to about 2k life before I tamed it >.<
Of course I was too lazy to abort taming and silence it >.>

I'll have to agree... WS's are TEH PWN! XD

My first one was a Deviate Coiler Hatchling named "Mango" (because of it's tropical/cheery colors ^^) from WC. I HAD to have one after I saw a hunter with one in Org. Being an avid lover of all things dragon, it seemed the perfect pet for me (being semi-dragonesque).

I'm currently 60BM spec (focusing on GftT in MM solely for WS's) with two pets - Hayoc ("Shinju" - 'pearl' in Japanese because of how beautifully its color changes in different lighting) and Rak'shiri (still "Cat" :| not happy having abandoned my Ghost Saber ;;). I've never Not had a wind serp by my side. Went from Deviate Coiler Hatchling to Deviate Coiler to Deviate Dreadfang to Washte Pawne to Arikara(<3 puff of smoke) and finally to Hayoc (whom I had to camp for two days GRR). Anyway MOVING ON...

I was grinding almost constantly to keep my two pets up with me pre-60. Now that I've hit 60, the speed of leveling seems to have hit a brick wall, and I can get both pets caught up before I'm even a quarter through level. I sort of dread switching to the cat to grind because, while he's very good at killing Squishy things (namely caster mobs), he's not very good at killing Non-squishy things (everything else lol).

I was grinding Elites from 55 to 58, and I found that my WS could deal with them much faster than my cat. When my WS leveled and I swapped to my cat things got a bit harder. He would lose HP much faster and I would pull more hate trying to kill the things to save him. Stuff I was killing wouldn't die nearly as quick for some reason... I found that I had to seek out the mage-type creatures more often for their squishiness to keep going. My WS could handle both mob types. Both pets have more or less equal NA and GS skill. In all fairness, I did max out some resistances (for the level) on my WS for dealing with them... so my cat had that going against him, too. The resistance was more for the mages (which the cat was able to deal with fine). But it still couldn't handle the warriors. I'm guessing it's because of the -% hp thing that cats get.

When I moved into Outlands, the saber REALLY shined right outside of Thrallmar. We were absolutely Tearing through those orc things (because they were ALL squishy lol). I haven't tried my WS on them yet as I'm usually off fighting bigger nasties/doing quests with her, but I'm sure she'd rip through them just as fast if not faster.

I recently Tanked... not kited... Volchan and Hematos with Shinju. Both Very challenging fights (and very fun :3). She often tanks adds (while beating the snot out of them at the same time) in instances when there's more aggro than usual. I've noticed that both pets seem to perform fairly well in instances, though.

To sum it up, certain pets seem to shine in certain places, but Wind Serpents seem to shine everywhere. ;b

At 70 I plan on having one of these in my third stable slot: link=http://petopia.brashendeavors.net/html/skins/skin windserpentskinoutland.shtml]Red[/link link=http://petopia.brashendeavors.net/html/skins/skin windserpentskinoutland3.shtml]Green[/link link=http://petopia.brashendeavors.net/html/skins/skin windserpentskinoutland4.shtml]Blue[/link. I'm leaning towards the red one because I've seen a lot of the blues and greens around (no reds). After seeing the red ones in Blades Edge I think they're just awesome.

And, (rofl) Why do all the monsters in Outlands seem to be on steroids? XD The Raptors are bigger than friggin' houses. lol Not to mention the Wind Serps... .... and this post. o_o how'd it get so long? roffle

I had Washte Pawne for a while, and I didn't like him in PvE because if you send him to grab aggro, he'd always open with lightning breath and draw the mob to you so you couldn't use ranged attacks. Quite annoying.

Khielraen, I think Hayoc is shining against armoured mobs more because Lightening Breath is avoiding a lot of their armour.

I tamed the rare white windserpent, Arash-ethis, from Feralas once. I wasn’t overly impressed at the time. I think that was shortly after they were given lightning breath. My current hunter is level 51 and he only has his one kitty pet. I could try camping it and taming it again. It would only be two levels below me. I’m just not sure it would be worth the effort. I’ve found I have to like how my pet looks before I can enjoy having it as a pet. And while I don’t dislike windserpents, neither do I find them very appealing. *shrugs*
