possible strategy guide threadFollow

#1 Apr 18 2007 at 5:40 AM Rating: Decent
I'm not sure if has been done and I haven't found it, but I'm wondering if there's a way to have a strategy thread started.

As the hunter leader in my guild I'm always looking for new ideas or tips on instances/raids for hunters. When I come to this forum, I think it would be really handy to have a dedicated thread to this end. It would eliminate the pointless searching through posts that don't have any information I need.

Also, I don't feel strategy is discussed that much. We talk about what talent spec is the best for it, but never use those threads to say what unique way that hunter has discovered to use their skills. I'd like to know.

So here's my suggestion:
Could we convince Azuarc this is a good idea, and get a dedicated thread going? One similar to the Az math and every question answered here, only dedicated to fun/unique/reliable ways to make the hunter more useful in an instance/raid situation.

I'd say put your instance/raid/boss at the top of your post, then outline the strategy. If you choose to comment on others, maybe say comment on such and such at the top of your post. This would condense the ideas to one place and make it much simpler to check.

If you think this might be a good idea let's see what we can accomplish.

*note* I didn't mention PvP because that is a whole different discussion and should potentially merit its own thread.

The key to stickydom is to have a worthwhile thread already going.

Can you give some more specific examples to what you mean, Smoothrustic?

Sort of like what he did for the strat on the second boss of heroic Mechanar.

I like the idea, personally. It would encourage more discussion among the Hunters who are in endgame as opposed to us just always answering the low-end Hunter questions.

I may put together a PvP guide to link to in my sig (non-sticky) if anyone is interested.

Sorry if I didn't make it very clear when I posted it.

I'd like to see a series of posts about particular strategies that hunter's have found useful. These can be for whole raids or instances, or just one boss. The thread I started here is sort of what I'd like each individual post to be. If many posts like that were accumulated in one spot, BAM, very helpful guide to someone new to those places.

I definately don't want to try to write this all on my own, as I know I don't have the raid experience. Making something to attach to my signature (if I had one, someone feel free to PM to tell me how) just would not be complete without input from other experienced hunters.

Again, I'm just floating this idea. I will obviously acknowledge a better idea or way to make this guide. Making a sticky seemed like a good choice to me.

New hunters need help, too - judging from many of the questions we get from them.

They need to be assured in the pet dept. that ANY pet will do just fine and that they need to focus more on learning to play hunter rather than finding "the most uberest pet there is so they can pwn pwn PWNZERS" - somehow they come in here w/ the idea that it's the pet they need to fix (and it's their skills/knowledge of how to play that needs work).

They tend to ask "what is the best pet" and "what is the best set of things to teach my best pet" -- and not "I'm a ___ race of __ level with a ___ spec in a pve/pvp server who does __% grinding, __% farming, and __% dueling/BG/pvp. I have been using a ______ pet which I no longer like for ______ reason. Is there a pet that might serve me better, and if so, how do you think I should train it?" We can really help someone asking THAT question. It's almost like we need to work on this format and literally hand it out (as if we could) to new hunters. I'd love for such an "e-form" to be at the top of a "help for new hunters" stickie. Maybe then I'd stop "OINKING" at everyone!

Many mechanicals seem not to be growlable or tauntable - new players need assurances that their pet is working fine. If they have trouble w/ robots, avoid robots.

Many new hunters also seem not to know to wait for growl/taunt to land before laying on the damage, especially when hunting higher lvl (3 lvls +) targets that tend to resist taunt more often. They come here saying their pet is not holding agro and is "broken," and what they really need is to understand game mechanics and how to get around them.

I've noticed many new hunters tend to sic pet and start shooting regardless of what they see in front of them. After siccing pet into a target rich environment, they wonder why they got swarmed w/ adds and died. They don't seem to understand the concept of shooting when one target is away from the others - luring him to safe spot - THEN siccing pet.

Many hunters have no idea what kiting (whether strafing or spin/jump shooting) is.

that (to me) sounds like a good idea, one that can be very helpful.

Bumped for the sake of argument

As well as replying to Iponema:

Yes I totally agree that many many people that look at this page are new hunters. They still need to read through the forum and look for answers. I would just like to see a place for end-game hunters to post tricks of the trade. Any information to make hunters useful in instances and raids, or increase our value and presence even more.

I don't want to leave the new players out, just get the wiser more experienced ones together...

Discussing strategy and stuff is a really good idea.

Sadly I cannot think about many hunter-specific strategies in the instances I've done up to now.

Now and then there are some pulls which are better done by a hunter.
However most of the time hunter's role in instances seems to be placing traps (re)trapping mobs, dealing a ton of damage and a little kiting now and then.

But if you want to invest the time for it, I'd love to contribute.

Just start a new thread, claim a few messages as placeholders so that strategies can be found easily, structure the whole thing a little (perhaps devided into several section for the different types of intances like 5man, 5man-heroic, raid instances).

Simply start the whole thing and we see to where it leads.

Sounds like a plan Mulgrin, I'll see what I can do.

Don't expect anything for a couple days as I'll be racking my brain for what I remember.

There's also that pesky thing called a job I've got to do in the meantime as well...

Add Pet off-tanking to the list, and that just about covers it.

The only remaining things are fairly situational. I'm still looking for more interesting and inventive ways to use Misdirection.
Misdirection to the tank and Multi are good for piles of trash that is targeted for AOE burn-down. (I've heard tales that Misdirection and Volley or Explosive Trap direct all aggro to the tank, but I haven't seen this work in practice.)
Parking your Pet far away and Misdirection to it is decent for a "kite" that leaves the Hunter free to shoot, but at the cost of the Pet since neither the Hunter nor the healers will be in range to cast healing on the Pet. This is good for occupying a 1-3 mobs in a large pull for a while, giving the group some time to burn down a few others without having to take the damage from the "kited" group. A Frost Trap (especially a Talented Frost Trap) can extend the life of the Pet, and your Trap cooldown might be ready again by the time the mobs return.

Currently, yes, Misdirection will redirect trap and volley aggro to the misdirection target. There must still be charges of misdirection left on your misdirect target; these are NOT used up by trap or volley!

For instance, in Shadow Labyrinth for the skeleton groups: Lay an explosive trap between the group and the skeletons. Cast misdirect on the tank and pull the skeletons. You should probably use concussive shot to slow the first one that you pull, because that mob gets to react early. That way the skeletons should hit the trap bunched together.

You should see the trap go off and the skeletons then charge your tank. Once they engage, you can fire a volley for additional AOE damage which won't give you aggro.

I guess, if you have doubts, the best way to test this would be to set up a pull where the trap is between you and the mobs, but your tank is well off to one side. When misdirection is applied, the mobs should stop running towards you and head to the tank instead.
