Problems With HuntersFollow

Please forgive me if this has been asked before, I'm not a premium member and do not have access to the search functions of the site.

My Warlock is currently level 28, with my talent points having been spent in the affliction tree (viewable at http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/classes/warlock/talents.html?2500220510200000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000
). I've found that I have a good deal of trouble dealing with Hunters, and I suppose actually a bit of difficulty with Shamans and Rogues, as well.

My main concerns with Hunters are that I am limited to only being able to fear one target, not both. If I attempt to attack hunters from range, I'll get arrowed / gunned to death, up close I have the issues of dealing with the close melee combat, which I also have issues with, being a cloth-wearer. I would assume that fearing the pet, and attacking the Hunter would be the most logical course of action, but I don't know what pets I should be using, how I should be preventing getting arrowed to death, what curses I should be using on the Hunter, etc. Most of my gear is the "of the Eagle" line for the +stamina and +int bonuses, I don't have much going in the way of +shadow damage.

Any input would be greatly appreciated, I'm very interested in learning how to play this class to it's fullest.

Hunters and rogues are our great problem, so don't get sad if you can't beat them most of the times.
Against a hunter, that depends what's his spec. Beast Masters are the hardest, since their pet can't be feared, and they hit hard and fast. Others have silence shot, and that's a big problem.
Well, I always ignore the pet and rush towards the hunter. At close range he can't use his bow, and hunters have pathetic melee skills. But he can put a freeze trap, so be careful. Next time, try fearing the pet and DoTing him whlie you go closer. Try stay at close range, so he can't shoot you, but run around him, avoiding the freeze trap.
If you *KNOW* you'll fight a hunter, put Succubus out and seduce him whlie you DoT and kill his pet first.

At your level I would use the succubus. Send her to seduce the hunter from outside bow range, this is the benefit of your pets having skills, it increases the range you can use them greatly.

With the hunter seduced you can easily close the distance to his dead zone (dead zone is the range that he cannot use his bow, but also cannot use his melee weapon learn this range). And once in the dead zone fear the pet.

Then lay out all your DoTs and begin to nuke him, before he gets out of range fear him. This will strip the fear off his pet, but remember that his pet is now a good 30 yards away from you and will take a bit of time to get to you. With the hunter feared just lay into him with all your damage, healthstone if you need to due to the pet and of course I say this as it works perfect, but there will be times where you also take a lot of dmg from the hunter too. From here you should have the upper hand and can win this fight.

Get more hit points. Get more stamina gear.

At his lvl (28) he doesn't yet have to worry about BM hunters.

Your main problem is that you don't have Deathcoil or instand HoT yet.

Get your insta-cast dots on the hunter ASAP. Put your siphon on the pet, too. Move while you are casting the insta-cast dots (coa, imp cor, siphon) to his dead zone. The more he can stand still and autoshoot you, the faster you will die.

Now try to get off a fear. If pet is slowing your casting too much - try searing pain (fast casting) - try wanding if the hunter is hurt (but u need a GOOD wand for your level).

I never liked affliction much for pvp *at your level* (I like it higher up); others love it. For pvp I prefer destruction or Demonology.

W/ destr you get 70% chance not to have your casting time slowed by being hit (casting destr spell?). You have insta-cast DD spell Shadowburn (on a fast enough cooldown to use at beginning and end of a fight, if you can spend the shards). Ruin is awesome when it crits.

Demonology = survivability.

Until you get deathcoil, as others suggested, consider succubus. Mess around w/ her - experiment. She can be hard to use at first.

Mostly I'd level up to the 40s, where you get the tools and talents to deal w/ pvp. You get Curse of Exhaustion (helps tons w/ meleers, not much w/ hunters) and instant Howl of Terror - gets hunter and pet. GL

I'm not sure if I'm lucky but I have found very beatable until they get bm, red hunter very hard to beat. But at your level I beat hunter by use vw shield. Honestly most hunter die quickly with dot and fear on them.

Yeah, most hunters at 28 don't have a ton of hitpoints. One that is "twinked" out w/ 2400 hitpoints or more will be hard to kill. Fortunately, most hunters go for Agi gear and have low hit points.

You counter their agi gear by moving - trying to stay in their dead zone.

Don't play "the Rock of Gibraltar" and stand there casting. Hunter's Autoshoot, stings, multi-shoot, and AC or aimed shot and pet will hurt you badly.

Your power is DoTS. DoTs work on the hunter no matter where you are. His shots can't touch you (except scatter, which u have to watch out for soon) if you are in his dead zone (or melee zone - his melee dps is lower than his shooting dps - so err by getting too close and not too far).

I'd ignore his pet and do all the insta-casts you can on hunter.

For BM hunters, what I used to do, as a Ruin/going for SM lock was to charge the hunter. The only spells I'd cast on pet were siphon to heal me and Curse of Weakness, to lower the pain from the pet. But that was only if pet was on me and I needed to charge hunter to work on him.

Don't waste time on the pet if you can reach hunter. I'd charge him, doing Shadowburn, CoA and imp Cor and siphon. BMs at lower lvls don't get scatter (if ever, I'll need to look this up). So it's easier to stay in their dead zone. Have healthstone ready. Deathcoil the hunter if he clips you to go to range - or is getting the upper hand - or to put him away. Second shadowburn also is good for this. Kill the hunter and the pet goes poof.

Watch for lvl 50+ bm hunters hvaing Beast W/in - they can't be feared when pet can't be feared. You can only win by moving on the hunter and insta-casting and doing whatever burst damage you have (or by running to others on your side, in BG's - let BM/BW time out - then go back and nail the hunter).

If you're Affliction or Destruction, there are talents in either tree that inrease your range to 36 yards. You can do a lot of insta-casts and kiting from outside the hunter's bow range, instead of inside his melee. Safer, imo..

Get your dots on him, then fear him.. Drain Life. Ignore the pet, is what I do.. Drain Life will heal you through a lot of what the pet does. Keep the hunter feared, keep your dots on him. Even if he silences you, your damage is already being done.. just keep out of his bow range as much as possible, or he'll return the favor by kiting you to your doom.

The hunter's bow range is 35 yards and can be increased to 41 with talents. There is no area outside his range but inside yours, whether you are a warlock, mage, druid, or priest. If you can be in range just long enough to cast DoTs and then get and stay away, congratulations, but this would seem difficult.

...ahh. That's what I did then, thanks for the confirmation. Anyway.. yeah. If you keep flitting out around the end of their range, it's hard for them to get those aimed shots off..

Still fugging hate hunters. I noobcoil/chain fear them, so happy that I have it.

Edit: Yeah, it's possible to dance around between their melee range and their bow's range. I never got the hang of it on my rogue, only way I see it happening now is dueling guildies until I get it right : \

I'm under the impression that this "dead zone" is a pretty small area to work with. I see people mentioning Deathcoil, is that a level 30 ability? I should have access to Siphon Life with my next talent point, that ability looks pretty good from what I've read on it. Should I not be casting immolate on hunters? Or is it one of the first things I should cast on them?

Trying to deadzone a hunter as a lock is pointless. You've got no means of holding him at that range. The only way to really beat them is to just be out play them. Hunters present a challenge at low levels, but they don't scale as viciously as casters do (a universal truth for nearly all games, btw).
