What controls do you use?Follow

#1 Apr 18 2007 at 12:16 PM Rating: Decent
Just wondering what hardware people use for control, spellcasting, shapeshifting etc. Keyboard, mouse, whatever. Especially interested in what you use in pvp.

I've been using a Nostromo Speedpad...sort of a mini keyboard for left hand with programmable keys, a "hat" type of thing, mouse wheel, and a thumb key. It works pretty well, and is definitley faster than clicking buttons on the screen w/ the mouse. But I still lose more pvp encounters than I win. Yeah, I know...maybe I just suck at pvp. Entirely possible.

I'd appreciate any tips or tricks for speeding things up.

I use only the standard UI, with a few things from the Interface menu (spell cast bar is the big one). I use no addons whatsoever, and I have no extra action bars onscreen. How do I get by? Simple. In combat, I use the keyboard exclusively. The only point at which I use the mouse is when I'm looting something or if I need to use an item.

I'm REALLY fast at switching action bars with Shift+#, where # is the number of the action bar I want. I've memorized all my action bars, so I know exactly what to hit when I need it. I only use 4 bars, so I can switch easily with my left thumb and forefinger. I get by fairly well, too; just last night, I destroyed an enemy Druid and took 0 damage. I found it highly amusing.

Edit: Typo, and because I edit every post I make because... I dunno. I guess I just suck.

Well, I am not as good as the previous poster. For Add-Ons, I use Bongos, but you can use FuBar, or Bartender. Bongos is very customizable but does require 20 min or so to figure out how it works with each character you have. Druid is set up differently than a Hunter.Aside the learning curve, Bongos has worked great for me.

I use the mouse to:
-target
-pan camera
-strafe
-click on spells

I use the arrows to move.

I really suck at PvP too.

When Rogues and stuff jump around me, and I have to pan the camera around... there goes clicking on any spell/ability. Then jumping I press the "0" button.

I WISH there was better controls available. I have a controler from FFXI (btw was better in the control department, with macros and menus).

Even with a controller there is still would still be a issue clicking on the abilities, while moving/jumping, and moving the camera.

I tried the W,E, w/e the letter movement ones are... get into a duel or w/e and lose track of what key/or your fingers slip one set to left of right and you're marching right off a cliff. So I don't use them.

I do ok with PvP with hunter, only cause I have to be standing still, not running/jumping around like my pants are on fire.

Any pointers plz help me out.

Caster form:

1 - Auto Attack
2 - Faerie Fire
3 - Entangling Roots
4 - Moonfire
5 - Mark of the Wild
0 - Rebirth
Shift 1 - Renew
Shift 2 - Regrowth
Shift 3 - Healing Touch
Shift 4 - Thorns

Bear Form (shift f1):

1 - Auto attack
2 - Maul
3 - Bash
4 - Swipe
Shift 1 - Demoralizing Roar
Shift 2 - Enrage

Cat Form (shift f2):

1 - Auto attack
2 - Claw
3 - Rip
4 - Prowl

General Controls:

W - Forward
A - Turn left
S - Reverse
D - Turn right
Q - Strafe left
E - Strafe right
Space - Jump

Also use the mouse to pan, click, and strafe/move when pvping

I'm only level 21 (almost 22) so I don't have every skill or ability yet, but I find this set up to be really, really optimal for me right now

Mouse Wheel up = Cat then prowl
Mouse Wheel down = Bear then enrage

Q = Faerie fire or Feral Faerie Fire (depending on form)
E = Cower in cat, Growl in bear (might add cyclone or entangling roots in caster)

Bear
====
1 = Mangle
2 = Bash
3 = Lacerate
4 = Feral Charge
5 = Swipe
6 = Demo Roar
7 = Maul (rarely used while tanking now)
8 = Challenging Roar
9 = Faery Fire (so I can see cooldown)
0 = Enrage (so I can see cooldown)
- = Frenzied Regen

Cat
===
1 = Mangle (Ravage if stealthed)
2 = Shred (Pounce if stealthed)
3 = Ferocious Bite
4 = Rip
5 = Rake
6 = Maim
7 = Cower (so I can see cooldown)
8 = Dash
9 = Faerie Fire (so I can see cooldown)
0 = Prowl (so I can see cooldown)

Gyfford, it sounds like you might benefit from the thing I use,

http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=157024

(I promise, I don't work for or own stock in Belkin).

Except for the standard "asdw" pattern I map all the regular keyboard-type keys to spells and such. I use the multidirectional switch on the side for shape shifting. Down for cat, back for bear, forward for travel. Up is jump because that's how I always used it in Quake. The thumbpad I map to stuff I use a lot (prowl) or need quickly (heals). I rarely have to move my left hand up to the computer keyboard.

But even with that I still suck at pvp. Maybe I should learn more about macros...

Nice, thanks Zalophus. I just might try that one out. I'll have to look into it further after work.

I also use the n52 and it's a Godsend.

The buttons down the left hand side of it are all Shapeshifting. Top is bear, middle is Cat, bottom is Travel/Aquatic.

Bright Red button is Flight Form.

I move with the thumbpad, but left/right on it are set to Strafe, not turn.

I use the mouse for looking/direction and occasionally targetting (Rare) or spells that I rarely use (Gift of the Wild).

I have a 5 button mouse. Button's 1 and 2 are normal. Button 4 and 5 are Select Next Enemy and Select Me, respectively. Button 3 (Middle Mouse) is Jump.

I use all the main buttons for actions. As I said earlier, the left hand side ride is devoted to Shapeshifting. After that, it goes 1-4, 5-8, 9-11. They do the following:

Human (Enemy Targetted):
1. Moonfire Rank 1 (Totem Killer ^^b)
2. Wrath
3. Moonfire Max Rank
4. Root
5. Starfire
6. Faerie Fire
7. (Can't remember, not used very often)
8. Hibernate
9. Nature's Grasp
10. Cyclone

Human (Friendly Targetted):
1. Rejuv
2. Regrowth
3. Healing Touch
4. Innervate
5. Abolish
6. Remove Curse
7. Thorns
8. MotW
9. Nature's Grasp
10. HT Rank 10
11. HT Rank 4

Cat:
1. Prowl / Pounce (If Prowling)
2. Mangle
3. Shred
4. Rip
5. Ferocious Bite
6. Feral Faerie Fire
7. Rake / Unprowl (If Prowling)
8. Dash
9. Nature's Grasp
10. Cower
11. Maim

Bear:
1. Feral Charge
2. Lacerate
3. Mangle
4. Bash
5. Demo Roar
6. Feral Faerie Fire
7. Maul
8. Enrage
9. Nature's GRasp
10. Swipe
11. Growl
